2 D.S. MacKenzie School Programs At D.S. MacKenzie School, we are proud of the diverse programming we provide. We do all of this within a safe, caring environment that fosters a strong sense of belonging during the transitions of adolescence. You can be assured that we know our students as individuals and support them from learners to leaders! Every Student, Every Day, A Success. Student-Owned Device Students are requested to bring a student-owned device which supports 21 st century instruction and learning. With teacher direction, students will use their own devices (preferably a Chromebook) in the classroom to access assignments, research information, communicate with other learners, and use productivity tools to demonstrate their learning. Second Languages All junior high students (grades 7-9) must receive instruction in a second language. D.S. MacKenzie School is fortunate to be able to offer a choice in second languages. Students will participate and attend these classes in groupings based on their choice of language to study. Students can choose either French or Japanese as their second language. There is no prerequisite for Japanese, and it is a great course for students who have never taken a second language before. Strategies Program This program is for students who have been diagnosed with a learning disability. Students are in a smaller group setting for some core subjects and integrated for all others. Strategies programming supports students with learning disabilities whose intelligence is measured as average to above average and who have significant academic delays. Learning disabilities are complex and can vary from person to person, requiring flexible instruction that meets each student s unique needs. Challenge Program The Challenge Program is for students who are coded as Gifted and Talented or who have demonstrated high levels of academic achievement. Students must complete an application form and be accepted in order to be in this program. Turning Points Program The Turning Points Program assists students with severe behavior disabilities. Programming focuses on helping students make academic gains, learn socially appropriate behaviour and develop appropriate social skills in the classroom and community. 2

3 D.S. MacKenzie School Full Year Options Students will explore art through a variety of media and techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture. Skills are developed and enhanced through a wide range of activities and assignments, which draw upon art in a historical context, diving into the world of artists lives, and the art movements associated with them. Students will learn to apply skills in a way that develops not only their ability to create realistic pieces but also to look at art as a form of personal expression. Studio time allows students to create and become engaged with their art as they learn to look critically at pieces and discover what makes something art. Students will develop knowledge of self and others, competency in communication skills, and the tools to tell stories through action. This is accomplished by the study of movement, speech, improvisation, technical theatre and theatre history. Students perform in practical scene work, participate in character development and role-play, and come to understand theatre tradition and etiquette. They learn to develop a positive selfimage, self-confidence and self-discipline; as well as to think imaginatively, control and express emotions, and develop voice. Music/Band In band class the students will learn to play a wind or percussion instrument as well as learning to read music and being introduced to a variety of musical styles. Available instruments: flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, horn, euphonium, tuba, orchestra bells, and snare drum. No previous experience required for Band 7. To register for Band 8 or Band 9, the student must have successfully completed Band 7 and Band 8, or have permission from the band teacher. D.S. MacKenzie School Trimester (term) Options Construction Students develops skills related to the design, creation, and evaluation of projects in response to challenges. The focus of the course is on student safety while designing and building personal projects made from wood, plastic or metals. Elements of artistic design, collaboration, decision making, effective relationships, problem solving, environmental stewardship, and communication are learned and applied. Digital Literacy Students engage in hands-on studies of a variety of technology applications including stop-motion animation, photography, digital photo editing, 3D design and coding. Students choose the pathway they wish to study, exploring skills and techniques related to the field of experience, ultimately displaying their learning through a digital portfolio. Elements of design, collaboration, decision making, effective relationships, problem solving, and communication are learned and applied. 3

4 Environmental Education Students develop the knowledge, skills, and the positive attitudes of individuals so that they will be selfconfident, capable and committed to setting goals, making informed choices and acting in ways that will improve their own lives and the life of their community. Every student will have the opportunity to participate in various activities during the term (examples include wilderness skills, cross-country skiing; orienteering; hiking; rock climbing, fishing, camping, mountain biking and canoeing). All activities are chosen to ensure success, but still provide a real element of challenge. An emphasis will be placed on planning and knowledge. Equipment for all activities is included; however, students may require access to some equipment such as good rain gear and outdoor winter clothing. Classroom theory, lessons, local trips, and potential overnight trips are all intended to prepare students for a possible longer overnight trip. Foods Students learn the fundamental skills and knowledge needed to successfully prepare a variety of healthy meals. Kitchen safety is a major focus while teaching important methods for creating successful dishes that will result in a variety of delicious meals. Leadership Students gain the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to build on or form their leadership style. Students will act as the student leaders in the school; they will plan whole school events and will be responsible for leading the school assemblies and events. Students will volunteer in Division 1 and 2 classes and work on their leadership skills with small groups of students. Students who take this class will examine the Me to We model and learn how they can impact their community locally, nationally and globally. Students will examine career choices that their leadership and interests would fit into. Sports Performance Students will examine careers within the sports and athletic field as they relate to competitive sport. Students will investigate how technology is being used to enhance athletic performance. They will investigate ways to increase their overall athletic performance, and incorporate these strategies towards their own development. Students will study basic anatomy and then research a common sports injury and prevention methods. Students will examine the role of medical professionals in the long-term success of athletes, and learn how to prevent and recover from common injuries related to the sport. Students will also have an opportunity to take part in multiple different activities, depending on their grade, that are not offered in Phys Ed class. 4

MacKenzie School Option Course Information Courses are offered in either full year or one term sections: full year courses last for the whole year, one term courses last only one term (three months). Students can take either: 2 full year courses, 1 full year and 3 trimester courses, 6 trimester courses. Students must choose alternate full year and one-term options in the event that we are not able to accommodate their option requests. D.S. MacKenzie School Option Course FAQ s When will I know which options I am registered in? You will find out which option you are registered in when you receive your timetable in September. Can I change my options? Please read the course description carefully and thoughtfully before making option selections. There will be no changes in option classes once schedules have been given to the students in September. Why do I need to select an alternate option? There are limited spaces in all classes. We will do our best to include a top choice for each student in his/her schedule, but this is not possible in every situation. If more students than we have room for request any particular option, decisions will be made through a random selection process. In the event we are not able to register you in the options you selected, we will place you in your alternate choice if space is available. Why didn t I get the option I requested? This could be for a variety of reasons: The options you selected happen at the same time and there is a scheduling conflict. The option you selected is full. There was not enough interest for the option you selected so we were not able to offer it. 5
