3 Introduction and Sample Lessons A good book can touch the lives of children like a good friend. Great care has been taken in selecting the books and activities featured in the Literature Units series. All of the activities are intended for use with primary students, grades 1 3. Some activities may need to be modified to meet the needs of students at various levels of ability. (Several modification options are included in the Suggestions for Using the Unit Activities. ) Activities in all academic subjects have been incorporated to make this a unit which teaches and reinforces skills across the curriculum. It is hoped that students will enjoy the story and feel a kinship with Arthur, while gaining knowledge and skills in all areas. Teachers who use the activities to supplement their own ideas can follow one of the following methods. A Sample Lesson Plan The sample lesson on page 4 provides you with a specific set of lesson plan suggestions. Each of the lessons suggested can take from one to several days to complete and can include all or some of the suggested activities. Refer to the Suggestions for Using the Unit Activities on pages 7 12 for information relating to unit activities. A Unit Planner If you wish to tailor the suggestions on pages 7 12 in a format other than that prescribed on the next page, use the Unit Planner on page 5. On a specific day, you may choose the activities you wish to include by writing the activity number or a brief notation about the lesson in the Unit Activities section. Help her figure out some of her sales totals by answering these questions. 1. What was the price of the glasses which had the most sales? 2. What was the price of the glasses which had the fewest sales? 3. How many more $55 glasses did Dr. Iris sell than $50 glasses? 4. How many $40 and $45 glasses did Dr. Iris sell? 5. How many $50 and $60 glasses did Dr. Iris sell? 6. How many pairs of glasses were sold altogether that week? Bonus: What was the total amount of money Dr. Iris made in glasses sales that week? 5 Science Magnifiers and Lenses The following activities provide students with experiences using magnification and lenses. Science Activity 1 Have children use magnifying glasses to observe objects in the classroom such as pencils, erasers, small game or puzzle pieces, etc. Then have them observe print from a page in a book with and without the magnifying glasses. How do the things look through the magnifying glass compared to how they look without using the magnifying glass? (They look bigger.) How is the magnifying glass able to make objects appear larger? (It has a curved surface.) Science Activity 2 If possible, gather various old lenses from eyeglasses, cameras, binoculars, watch faces, etc. Have the children use these lenses to observe some of the same objects they observed with the magnifying glasses. Have them discuss and compare their observations. Put children in pairs. Give each pair of children a clear plastic drinking glass. Have them hold a page of print behind the glass. Do the objects you saw under the magnifier look the same or different under the other lenses? (Have students discuss what they observed.) How does the print appear when looking through the glass? (It looks the same as it does without the glass.) Science Activity 3 Fill each glass with water. Have the children observe print through the water-filled glass. How does the print appear when looking through the water-filled glass? (It looks bigger.) What conclusion can we draw from this observation? (Water magnifies.) Science Activity 4 Have the children continue this procedure with other objects and/or with other clear containers to support their conclusion. Next, have them observe print through the water-filled glass, this time placing it at the bottom of the glass. How does the print appear through the bottom of the glass? (It is normal size.)
