1 Interest packet Numb3rs: We all use math every day; to predict weather, to tell time, to handle money. Math is more than formulas or equations; it's logic, it's rationality, it's using your mind to solve the biggest mysteries we know. Introduction Algebra I is the foundation for high school mathematics courses. Moreover, it is a study of the language, concepts, and techniques of Algebra that will prepare students to approach and solve problems following a logical succession of steps. Skills taught in the course lay groundwork for upper level math and science courses and have practical uses. It is the bridge from the concrete to the abstract study of mathematics. Topics include simplifying expressions, evaluating and solving equations and inequalities, and graphing linear and quadratic functions and relations. Real world applications are presented within the course content and a function's approach is emphasized. During Term 1 we will focus on expressions, equations, and Functions. Chapter 1 focuses on the basics of algebra, showing how variables are used in forming algebraic expressions and how expressions are used in forming equations and inequalities. Along the way, students evaluate expressions using the order of operations and solve equations and inequalities using mental math. Students use equations to solve real-world problems as part of the four-step problem solving plan. Students also learn precision and measurement tools. The chapter concludes by looking at the dependence of one variable on another in the form of functional relationships. Students see that functions have multiple representations: verbal descriptions, rules, tables, and graphs. Chapter 2 focuses on solving linear equations in one variable. In the first half of the chapter, students find square roots and compare real numbers. Students also learn the properties of equality in the course of solving simple one-step equations, and they employ those properties to solve increasingly complex multi-step equations. In the second
2 half of the chapter, students solve proportions using the multiplication property of equality as well as the cross products property. The chapter concludes by asking students to rewrite functions and formulas by solving for one variable in terms of the other(s). Topic Overview Expression Graphs Square Roots Order of Operations Integers Ratios Equations Rational Numbers Proportions Inequalities Operations with Real Numbers Essential Questions - How can you solve the equation? (Using Order of Operations.) - Evaluate the expression. - Simplify the expression. Skills List These are the skills we will focus on this term. As always, you should be respectful to others and complete all assignments with great effort by the next class day. Chapter 1 - Evaluate expressions [7.N.Q.1] - Apply order of operations [7.A.SSE.1] - Write expressions verbal phrases into expressions [7.A.SSE.1] - Write equations and inequalities [7.A.CED.1] - Use a problem solving plan [7.A.CED.1] - Use precision and measurement [7.N.Q.3] - Represent functions as rules, tables, and graphs [7.A.CED.2] [7.F.IF.4] Chapter 2 - Find square roots and compare real numbers [7.N.Q.1] - Solve one, two, and multi-step equations [7.A.REI.3] - Solve equations with variables on both sides [7.A.REI.3] - Write ratios and proportions [7.A.CED.1] - Cross products [7.A.CED.1] - Rewriting Equations and Formulas [7.A.CED.4] Reference Materials Larson Algebra I, COMMON CORE EDITION. 6 Grading Rubric Final Test 30% Homework 30% Classwork 10% Quiz 10% Participation 20% Assessment Graph Classwork, 10% Paricipati on, 20% Quiz, 10% Final Test, 30% Homewor k, 20% Homework Completion of every homework assignment is simply the most important part of learning. Homework will be assigned for every lesson, and unless specified it s due before the beginning of next class session. A typical class will begin with a warm-up question, so while students are working on the question homework will be graded. Homework will be graded based on its completion or correction, so students must show their work along with answers. Final Project 1. Create 15 problems - 1 question from each lesson (Chapter 1.1 ~ Chapter 2.8) 2. You should also provide answer key in separate paper - Not only the answers, it should include work out solution. Grading 1. 50% of your project grade will be based on the quality of the questions you made. 2. The rest 50% will be the score you obtained by solving your friends problem set. Due date 1. First class of the 5 th week
7 Example Solve the equation (Ch. 2. 4) - ( ) Answer Key - ( ) (multiplying the reciprocal) - ( ) - (subtraction property of equation) - - (division property of equation) - - (Solving multi-step equation by using reciprocal) 1. Creating one problem from each lesson we learned: In order to make a problem, test maker needs to pick one major concept which s/he think is important. Moreover, makers made the problems by themselves based on what they think important so the concepts they used will last long in their memory. 2. Not just creating the problems, test makers also need to provide answer keys which contains the process. This step helps the maker to remember better and get better understanding of the concepts. 3. Test maker becomes test taker: You can compare the concepts that your friend thinks important with yours. Also, finding your friends error is one of good method to study math; Finding the error and how to improve or make it perfect. 4. Grading the problems you made: Sometimes test taker might have the correct answer but the method to of finding would be different from yours. Knowing the more than one method to solve a single problem will help you later. 5. Giving Corrections: Going over the problems the test taker missed, it makes test makers to think "why did s/he have this wrong answer?" "What was his/her mistake in process?" Also, sometimes you will find your own mistakes which test taker couldn't find. Test taker might have different answer from makers answer but can be right. Because, it is possible to have two different answers from one problem based on how it is interpreted. Main idea of this project is to give you a chance to think and be as both test maker and taker.
