2 Classroom Policies and Procedures Phone: Arrival School will begin at 8:25 a.m. It is very important that your child is at school on time everyday. They may miss important learning at the beginning of the day if they are tardy. Also lunch count is taken at the beginning of the day, so if your child is going to be late and he/she is ordering a school lunch, please call his/her lunch choice into the office, If a lunch choice is not called in, your child will receive peanut butter and jelly.

3 Arrival Procedure Students will be allowed in the building at 8:15. They will be allowed to eat breakfast in the gym at this time. If they have already eaten breakfast they may sit and chat with their classmates. They do not have to eat breakfast. At 8:25 classes will start lining up. At 8:30 the bell will ring and teachers will walk students to their classrooms. Behavior Student behavior and time on task is crucial to learning. The second grade team will work to help your child become a responsible and respectful member in our classroom community. We will have regular class meetings in which students will be given the opportunity to discuss classroom or personal issues. Our goal is to provide a safe and nurturing environment in which all students can be successful. We will inform you of any consistent problems in person, by , or on the phone. Any serious situations will be handled by a conference with your child and assistance, from Mrs. Blackwell if necessary. Please contact me with any concerns you have. Thank you for your support and involvement! Birthdays If you would like to send in a snack or treat for your child s birthday, they will be shared at recess. A simple treat works best. For example, cookies, granola bars or brownies. Please bring napkins with your treat. Please do not send drinks. If your child has a summer birthday and you would like to celebrate it in the classroom, We can schedule a birthday celebration. Instructional time is crucial. We do not have a lot of time to celebrate so please do not send in cakes, pizza or cupcakes. These items are great for after school parties. Unless you are planning on inviting the whole class please mail all birthday invitations from home. Passing out party invitations at school causes a huge disturbance. Book Orders Several times throughout the year there will be book orders sent home with your child. Book orders are a great way to update your child s home library at a low price. Please check the order form for the due date. Please write all checks to the book company. Conferences Please do not hesitate to schedule a conference before or after school if you have any questions or concerns about your child s progress. Winans has two regularly scheduled parent-teacher conferences throughout the school year and your child will receive two report cards.

4 Take Home Folders Each child will have a folder in which they will take home papers and information. Please remember to check for your child s folder every day/friday for finished work, important messages, and homework assignments. Also, you can use the folder to send information to me about your child. Use the folder to send notes, lunch money, book orders, homework etc. to school. This folder needs to be returned to school the following Day/Monday!(depending on your teacher) Please clean the folder out with your child and return it promptly to school with only the papers the teacher needs to see. Not all papers will be graded because some of them we go over in class or complete together. Please only send back papers that are homework or that say, complete and return at the top. Dismissal Our day ends at 3:30 p.m. We will send home a note at the beginning of the school year asking about your child s plans for after school. If these plans ever change, please notify the teacher in writing as soon as possible. When the bell rings, second grade will walk out our back doors and up the sidewalk. Bus riders will be dismissed first. If your child is being picked up, we ask that they say goodbye to their teacher and tell whom they are leaving with each and every day. Please be advised that students may not cross through the parking lot when being picked up in a vehicle. Note: Please remind anyone you have authorized to pick up your child to bring their drivers' license for identification purposes. Field Trips A note concerning field trips will go home several weeks before the trip. Be sure to check your child s folder for important information. Please be sure all of your telephone numbers and emergency numbers are up to date in the office, these are the numbers we will take with us on our field trips. Please fill out the volunteer form now. This is important just in case you ever volunteer in the school or on a field trip during the school year. Homework Your child will bring home a homework packet every Friday throughout the school year and should be returned to school on the following Friday. Homework is a vital part of your child s learning. It is an extension to the learning we are doing at school. The homework is part of your student s grade. It is assigned 10 points for turned in completed and on time, 7 points for completed but late and 0 points for not turned in at all or over 2 weeks late. Lunch Please send the money or check for lunch/milk in a SEALED ENVELOPE, with teacher s name, your child s name and amount on the front. You may also go to and pay for your child s lunch online, check their account, and/or fill our applications for free/reduced lunch. This website accepts deposits from credit cards only. You will need to know your child s student ID number, which you can find on the placement sticker sent to you at the end of August. Make sure your child knows if they are having school or home lunch each day and whether or not they will need milk.

5 Newsletters The Second Grade Team will send home newsletters on a regular basis throughout the year to keep you updated on what is happening in the classroom. Please take the time to read the newsletters, as it will keep you informed on your child s learning. You will also receive a newsletter from the office on a regular basis, this is equally important to read and it will update you on the happenings here at Winans and throughout the district. Progress Reports Progress reports will come home biweekly. The reports will have your child s current academic and behavior performance. This report gives you valuable information such as rocket math levels and turned in homework data. Please review the report and sign it. The report will come home with the Friday folder. Please return the signed report in your child s folder. Quality Pledge The Winans Quality Pledge is I will be respectful, responsible, ready to learn and safe. On most days we will have two recesses. Please dress your child appropriately. If your child needs to stay in for any reason they must have a doctor s note in the office. Reminder: If it is below 60 degrees, students must wear a jacket. The following are our Playground Rules, please discuss them with your child: Slide on your bottom going down; no flips Parallel bars no standing or sitting on top Swings sitting only; no twisting, stomachs, or pushes Walk around the swings; no jumping off swings Balls keep away from the building; throw waist high No Screaming screams are for emergencies only Stay inside the fence Stay away from classrooms and the windows If eating, eat first; must sit to eat Throw garbage away in a barrel Wood chips stay on the ground outside No climbing on any fences Touch and let go when playing tag or football; no grabbing clothes or bodies Use your words to solve problems, not your hands

6 Snack We will have a recess/snack break every day. Please send in a simple and nutritious snack with your child each day. Snacks such as fruits, vegetables, granola bars, pretzels, etc. are preferred. Most of the time we will be eating our snacks outside before we play on the playground, so a snack that can be eaten with fingers and wrappers that can be thrown away are more convenient for your child. Special Classes Our special classes this year will be: gym, library, music, art and some students will get Spanish. Please have your child wear tennis shoes on gym day and pants are preferred for comfort. Remember to return library books EVERY week on the day before our assigned library day, students will not check out new books if the previous week s books are not returned. Spelling Students will receive their Spelling list with their homework packets on Friday with the test given on the following Friday. The goal of the spelling program is to have students learn how to spell high frequency words and to learn spelling patterns to use in their writing. Learning to spell these words correctly will help your child in reading and writing. Supplies Please send your child with a backpack to school every day to avoid the loss of papers or books that are sent home. Students will also be supplied with basic school supplies at the beginning of the year. If your child misplaces or damages their assigned supplies, we will request that a replacement be sent from home. Any personal school supplies should stay at home to be used for homework. We are asking for the following donations from each family to start the year: sanitizing wipes (example brands are Clorox, Lysol, Target brand etc.) Kleenex #2 pencils Dry erase markers As you are shopping throughout the year, please remember, we will often be in need of Kleenex and sanitizing wipes. Please feel free to send these things in at any time throughout the year. Toys Please have your child leave all toys (this includes all card collections, footballs, basketballs, etc.) at home. Any toys brought to school will be held until a parent is able to pick them up. Volunteers Volunteering is encouraged in the classroom as it facilitates your child s education and self-esteem. We would love to have you volunteer in our rooms. Children love having their families involved in their classroom and school Please contact your child s teacher by phone or to set up a time to VOLUNTEER!!! We will welcome and appreciate any help that is sent our way.
