4 Introduction The process of Improvement Planning in Kentucky is used as the means of determining how schools and districts will plan to ensure that students reach proficiency and beyond by The process focuses school and district improvement efforts on student needs by bringing together all stakeholders to plan for improvement, by focusing planning efforts on priority needs and closing achievement gaps between subgroups of students, by building upon school and district capacity for high quality planning, and by making connections between the funds that flow into the district and the priority needs in schools. Your school's plans for improvement must be based on careful and honest analysis of data, address all content areas, and clearly address gaps in student achievement. SY Page 1

6 Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. SY Page 3

7 Description of the School Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves? has a student body that consists of approximately 1260 students in grades It is situated in the community of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky with a population of 6,959 and a county population of 27,643. There are three elementary schools, an intermediate school, and a single middle school that are providing students to our one high school. Montgomery County has a 76.7% of high school graduate or higher and 15.5% of a college bachelor degree or higher. The median income is $37,393, persons below the poverty level is 23.2% as provided by the US Census Bureau. Mt. Sterling, KY, 30 miles east of Lexington, is the economic engine of Montgomery County. Mt. Sterling's top industries include manufacturing, transportation and business services. Major employers range from Nestle, which makes its Hot Pocket and Lean Pocket products in Mt. Sterling, to automotive part suppliers. Mt. Sterling's quality of life attractions include golf, a regional arts center, a new hospital and a satellite campus for Morehead State University. The is committed to continuous improvement in teaching that results in learning for all students. Our commitment is evident in our School Comprehensive Improvement Plan with an emphasis on effective means for impacting learning through appropriate change and support to assist teachers and students in reaching proficiency and beyond. Giving back and serving the community is another priority for Mt. Sterling/Montgomery County. The SERVE student group is a high school organization that connects students with service activities, such as volunteering at local civic group banquets or programs. Additionally organizations including the Future Business Leaders of America, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, 4-H and ROTC offer students access to more community service-learning projects. SY Page 4

Montgomery County Schools has had significant changes in its school systems.
