2 FIRST LEGO League Have you ever seen so many people excited about out solving real-world problems and engineering? We feel truly fortunate to work with committed students, individuals, and organizations that share our goal of inspiring the next generation to celebrate engineering, science, and technology. We commend you for assuming an active role in the development of today s youth into tomorrow s talented workforce. Tournaments such as this provide participants the opportunity to see that they are part of something larger than their own team. Ultimately, it is our hope that team members see tournaments as a microcosm of society where people work together to solve common problems. Thank you for your attendance of this event. Participation is an opportunity to engage with other teams and individuals while encouraging camaraderie. ABOUT FIRST FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded in 1989 by inventor Dean Kamen to inspire young people s interest and participation in science and technology. Based in Manchester, NH, First is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit public charity. FIRST is supported by a strong network of sponsors and volunteers. 3 Starting FLL Start by thinking about it now! FLL is for children Teams of up to ten form in all sorts of ways: school groups, clubs, civic organizations, or groups of friends. Registration for new teams runs from May to September each year at gofll.usfirst.org. You do not need to know exactly who will be on the team, but early registration allows you to start communicating with FLL and to learn more about how to make your team successful. There are many resources to help new and experienced coaches online at Also, feel free to contact Iowa FLL as well with any questions at If you are looking for existing teams in your area, check out TeamUp on the FIRST website. What is FIRST? FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a non-profit dedicated to promoting engineering and science to youth through fun, hands-on programs, such as FIRST LEGO League (FLL). Who can start a team? Anyone can start a team or coach a team! In fact, most FLL coaches aren t engineers they are parents, teachers, or volunteers who see the value of kids participating in FLL events. How often do teams meet? Teams can meet as often as they would like. Most FLL teams meet twice a week for a couple of hours. Often, teams will meet more regularly as they get closer to a tournament. What s Gracious Professionalism? Ask an FLL Team! Gracious Professionalism is at the heart of FIRST LEGO League. All participants treat each other with respect, help each other out, and collaborate so everyone can succeed. Is FLL just about building robots? No way! The robot is just one important part of FLL. Teams also do a research project, learn presentation skills, explore technical & engineering concepts, and develop teamwork skills. As we tell FLL teams, what we learn is more important than what we win.

6 The Teams Robot Challenge FLL teams have had approximately 4 months to design, build, program, and test a robot made entirely from LEGO parts, making use of the LEGO Mindstorms robotics kits. Their robots are completely autonomous (they are not remote controlled). Teams have 2.5 minutes per round to complete as many challenges as they can, in any order. Each team participates in 3 matches. Teams keep the single best score from these 3 matches. Teams are penalized for touching their robot during a match if it is out of base by losing one yellow bacteria, which are worth points in base.
