Online textbook can be accessed through my.classlink.com\wcstn Course Description: This course is designed to challenge students mathematically and prepare students for their future math classes, as well as, the math they will use in their everyday lives. Students and parents can view the WCS Scope and Sequence at for specific standards and objectives, or they can ask me for a hard copy of this document. Below indicates the areas in which students will be assessed and how each quarter s grade will be calculated in Skyward. 2 Grading Policy At Mill Creek Middle School, we believe that students should be given multiple opportunities to practice a skill before it counts for a grade. Therefore, we provide students with many ongoing practice opportunities including homework and classwork, before we administer an assessment (a quiz or a test) for a grade. Homework is not counted as a grade, but is required of each student because of the important practice that it provides. In addition, we believe that some students will require more time to learn a skill and we allow time for this individualized development. Mill Creek students are given until the end of the grading period (the quarter) to provide their final mastery of a skill. While all students will take the assessments (quizzes and tests) at the same time throughout the quarter, if students are not pleased with their scores or grades, they may meet with their teachers during Flex time to receive extra help. They may retake their quizzes or tests, provided they have sought this Flex time assistance and remediation work. Finally, at Mill Creek Middle School, we believe in grading for learning. Our grades are based on the content we have taught, not on behaviors. Therefore, participation, preparedness, and other behavioral factors are handled through our school wide and class wide behavior management programs, not through grades. All students grades are a clear reflection of their mastery of the content. We adhere to the WCS Board policy grading scale of A=91-100, B=81-90, C=72-80, D=70-71, F=69 or below, and teachers will provide communication regarding which content standards contribute to each grading category in our electronic grading system. In order for a student to be eligible to retake an assessment, the student must attend a boost session, complete all homework for the unit, and complete the test corrections and reflection packet. Math boost sessions will take place on Wednesdays this year. If you need additional help, please contact me and we will work something out, whether it is before and/or after school or during lunch. I am here to help you succeed! Procedure for Parent Access to Instructional Materials Tennessee law (Public Chapter 660) requires that parents or guardians be allowed to view instructional materials being used with their children. Williamson County Schools parents or guardians who wish to view materials should submit a request in writing to the teacher. In addition, parents should seek clarification from the teacher about any assignment or instructional material about which they have concerns. Unresolved concerns may then be brought to the attention of the school administration. Daily Required Student Materials: 1. 2 inch binder- (PREFERRED) or 2 plastic folders with pockets and brads (one per semester) 2. 5 Subject Spiral Notebook 3. Pencils with eraser

3 Classroom Rules: 1) Respect yourself, respect others, and their property. 2) Be prepared for class each and every day. Make sure you have all books, materials, and work upon entering the classroom. Be in your seat when the bell rings with all of your materials ready and beginning the warm up. 3) Follow directions the first time they are given. 4) Actively participate in class. 5) Stay positive and remember that I am always here to help. Seventh Grade Discipline Policy If a student is not positively affecting our classroom or school environment by not following the classroom and/or school rules, then the following list of consequences will commence. If the student continues to not follow the rules, the consequence will move down the list. In addition, depending on the severity of the behavior, the consequence may begin further down the list. 1) Verbal Warning (maximum of two) 2) Silent Lunch and/or contact home 3) Before or after school detention and contact home 4) Friday Opportunity School and contact home 5) Half-Day In School Suspension and contact home 6) Full Day In School Suspension and contact home Severe disregard for rules, such as fighting, will result in an automatic before or after school detention and phone call home. Classroom Policies: Be responsible and a problem solver! All assignments are expected to be turned in on the expected due date, at the beginning of class. Students are expected to give their best effort on every assignment. A student could be asked to redo an assignment if his/her best work was not given. Homework: Homework is practice of what we are learning in class. Homework must be completed every night it is assigned. Homework is practice, just like you practice for your sports or hobbies/interests. To become an expert, it is said you must put in 10,000 hours of practice. If students do not complete homework, then they will serve a Homework Club during Flex to complete the homework they did not do. It is vital that students continue to complete homework thoroughly as each day will build upon itself and students need to have a solid understanding of the material before they can move on. Retakes: All students must have homework and classwork completed with a reflection form filled out in order to have the chance to retake an assessment. If the student is missing homework they are to complete missing homework before being able to take the retake. Once the above is complete, sign up with Ms. Grotte for a time to take the retake. Tardies: Students who are tardy 3 times to my class will receive a Silent Lunch.

4 Unprepared: Students who are unprepared (i.e. do not have the appropriate materials to learn) three times in my class will receive a Silent Lunch. Absence: When a student is absent, the work that was due on the day of their absence is due immediately upon, their return. Please turn this into the appropriate academic period bin. Then, check with Ms. Grotte to see what work was missed. You may be required to attend a Boost, Catch Up, and/or Study Focus session during Flex in order to complete the work that you missed. Remember, it is the responsibility of the student to get any missing work. In addition to the classroom rules and policies, the Mill Creek Middle School Student Handbook will also be followed at all times. 7th Grade Math Homework Policy The majority of math homework for 7 th grade will be completed through our online resource known as ALEKS (Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces). ALEKS can be accessed through a student s online textbook via the Launchpad and is tied to our curriculum standards. Students will receive individualized feedback and differentiated learning on every single question as the program adapts to each student s readiness and prior knowledge. With ALEKS, each student will be able to progress through the chapter s content at his/her own pace. All 7 th grade math students will be required to complete 80 minutes of ALEKS each week (Friday-11:59 pm the following Thursday) on specific topics. Since homework is assigned weekly, students may work at their own pace according to their extracurricular schedules. Students may access ALEKS at home (on a computer or mobile device) or at school during FLEX or Study Focus. Student Gmail Accounts: Students have all been issued a school Gmail account in which they are expected to use for all academic purposes along with contacting a teacher. Teachers will only respond to s from students that use the Gmail account. Within each assignment there will be parameters given to student which will detail the time frames in which teachers will respond to s. These accounts are also accessible from computers outside of school. If a student goes to they can log into this account.
