2 THE OUTCOMES WE WILL COVER IN THIS YEAR S PROGRAM The 6 steps student leaders should follow to implement POSITIVE CHANGE. The reason that leaders must understand the distinction between changes that are VALUABLE and ideas that are just DIFFERENT. We will explore strategies for ensuring that LEADERS implement changes that benefit OTHERS. Students will use a brand new assessment TOOL to reveal aspects of their own school that would benefit from positive TRANSFORMATION. Literally dozens of new ideas for EVENTS and FUNDRAISERS that can easily be organised by STUDENTS and fulfill a valuable PURPOSE within your school. The 4 essential ways to grow in INTEGRITY and transform the positive INFLUENCE that a leader has on others. Understanding the 10 factors that contribute to the HEAVY LOAD that many leaders experience. How to use the 3 proven STRATEGIES that assist student leaders to increase their personal CAPACITY. The importance of knowing the 4 reasons why some students are RELUCTANT to be INVOLVED in activities organised by student leaders. How to TRANSFORM the number of students PARTICIPATING in school activities by drawing on 4 key strategies. The importance of a healthy SCHOOL PRIDE and the ideas that leaders can put into ACTION to transform this. We will explore the vital role that STUDENT LEADERS play in setting school CULTURE. Understanding the COMMON MISTAKES that many student leadership TEAMS make and how to avoid these. The 4 steps to transform the INFLUENCE that a student leadership team has on a SCHOOL COMMUNITY. WHO FACILITATES THE GRIP STUDENT LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE? This conference does not feature guest speakers, but is presented by a team of SPECIALISTS in the area of student leadership. The GRIP Leadership team is comprised of young men and women who know what it s like to be in the shoes of a student leader. Some team members are recent school graduates with the ability to share from their own recent experience. Other team members are in their twenties and thirties and have worked across thousands of schools to develop a career exploring what works, what s current and what s possible in the area of student leadership. The youthful and professional nature of the GRIP Leadership team is such that teachers consistently compliment about their ability to engage the students whilst presenting a wealth of meaningful leadership concepts. (More information on GRIP Leadership is available at Page 2 of 5
3 SECONDARY PROGRAM - THEME: TRANSFORMERS All plenary sessions and electives include presentations, activities, discussions, and leadership games. Sessions are updated every year so that students can attend numerous years if desired. **ALL BRAND NEW SESSIONS** 8.30am Doors Open 9.00am SESSION 1 Plenary Session: Contributing Positive Change as a Team Nothing is ever TRANSFORMED without CHANGE. Sometimes students suggest changes that are not suitable, too unrealistic, or not properly planned. During this session students will be taught a practical method for successfully introducing changes at their school using a five step process based on the acronym CHANGE. As part of the session, students will be led through a discussion to gauge whether their fellow leaders have identified similar changes which could be introduced as part of the team s positive contribution am Morning Tea Morning Tea Optional Session: Our Favourite Fundraising Ideas Many student leaders love to fundraise for school and charity projects, but most people agree that raffles and sausage sizzles can become repetitive! This short session will share many of the best ideas that the GRIP Leadership team have come across. These ideas will increase the fun and the funds raised when it comes to this aspect of student leadership am SESSION 2 Plenary Session: Transforming My Integrity One of the most worthwhile aspects of leadership for a student to develop in their formative years is their own personal integrity. Without a high level of integrity, few leaders have any influence on others. This session will assist student leaders in transforming their integrity by understanding the importance of admitting mistakes, following through on promises, backing up words with actions and always displaying values. ELECTIVES #1 (choose 1) Option 1: Transforming My Capacity Student leaders usually carry a heavy load. This often means that whilst being involved in many things, some leaders fall short of what they hoped to achieve in each area. This practical workshop will teach leaders strategies for increasing their capacity, making the leadership journey more enjoyable and more productive. Option 2: Transforming Event Participation Wouldn t it be great if large crowds of students automatically flocked to every event hosted by student leaders? Sometimes this happens, but this practical workshop will examine four reasons why this isn t usually the case. Following this, the session will explore four strategies proven to increase student participation pm Lunch Break 1.00pm SESSION 3 ELECTIVES #2 (choose 1) Option 3: Transforming School Pride How much pride do students currently show in your school? From time to time, all schools can do with a boost in this area. It s not something that can be transformed overnight, but student leaders are usually the best people to lead the charge. This workshop will equip student leaders with practical strategies for improving this aspect of any school. Option 4: Transforming the Effectiveness of Our Team Motivated leaders can end up frustrated if it feels like a leadership team is crawling along at a snail s pace. With lots of ideas and lots of potential, it is important that all student leadership teams are on a pathway to being highly effective. This workshop will explore practical ways for leadership teams to ensure that they start off effectively, and continue being successful as the journey continues. 1:45pm 2.30pm Q&A With GRIP Leadership Team and Final Review Close Page 3 of 5

5 WHAT TEACHERS SAID LAST YEAR Never seen a group of teenagers so engaged... I was most impressed with the way you all conducted the Grip sessions. You balanced content with fun superbly and in my 16 years teaching have never seen a group of teenagers so engaged. Nice work! The boys were on a high on the bus back to school and the talk of the bus were the projects they are going to unfold as the year progresses. The conference brought the group together. Shaun Newbold, Teacher, New Town High School TAS Learn from one another... A very polished and positive presentation that successfully got our leaders reflecting on their leadership experience. It was great to see our leaders interact with those from other schools to learn from one another in such a positive manner. Philip Heath, Teacher, St Paul s Grammar School NSW You have equipped our young leaders... Thank you so much for your conference. At the conclusion of your conference while all the students were enthusiastic we sat our group down and went through all their thoughts and ideas while they were fresh in their minds. They were so eager, and even gave up shopping time to discuss their ideas. I feel like you have equipped our young leaders with a good starting point and some direction for the remainder of the year. Kylie Gardner, Teacher, Swan Hill College VIC The topics are relevant... GRIP Leadership conference is a must do for our student leaders. The topics are relevant to their roles in leadership and the conference is always engaging. Andrew Ballin, Teacher, Ayr State High School QLD 100% participation... A big thank you for the engaging and simple way that the team were able to connect with hundreds of kids present, getting great responses, 100% participation and them being able to see value in leadership lessons and other school connections made on the day was outstanding. At the end of the day, the students were still enthusiastic about what skills they had learnt, and how they were going to implement their plan. Chris Gray, Teacher, Mater Dei Catholic College WA Will take a lot back to our school... Another great day at the GRIP Leadership Conference in Canberra, the students from Amaroo really enjoyed the day and will take a lot back to our school in moving forward with their leadership journey in Thanks GRIP team!
