1 Mme Olsen LCHS French 3 Syllabus Course Description: Students increase proficiency in all phases of language study. The class provides an ongoing review of basic structures taught in the first two years. A reinforcement of the communicative skills may be encouraged through conversation, exposition, and selected readings, which reflect the customs, character, and traditions of the French. Written work involves composition, vocabulary development, and grammatical skills, with special emphasis on verb tenses. 3 YEAR-LONG THEME: LE MONDE FRANCOPHONE Grammar: There will be a review of grammar in contextualized format. Learning Expectations: Listening: Students will distinguish more complex structures and assimilate acquired material and apply it to new text. Speaking: Students will incorporate complex sentence patterns, give extemporaneous oral presentations; resolve many individual difficulties in pronunciation, stress, and intonation, and use the French language as the primary means of communication in the classroom. Reading: Students will acquire a broader vocabulary through selected readings, expand horizons, and comprehend simple texts for personal communication, recreation, or informational purposes; and understand some main ideas and information from texts of a higher level. Writing: Students will manifest good writing sills, compose paragraphs in which they will apply more complex structures; convey information or ideas for social and academic purposes; and write creatively on assigned topics. Culture: Students will develop further awareness of francophone countries; compare some aspects of French and American culture and recognize contributions of outstanding individuals. Grading will include but is not limited to the following: Formative Assessments will be taking place with 0% weight in grade calculation. Formative assessments help teacher, student and parents gauge readiness for summative assessments. Some examples are warm-ups & closing tasks, groupwork and homework. Homework will be assigned at the beginning of the week and will be due the following Monday or Tuesday. Homework is to be completed on-line and submitted through VISION. If a student does not have access to the internet at home; he (or she) is to plan get their homework done in the school computer lab or library during Raider Rally. Summative: 100% - essays, CPAs (Communicative Performance Assessments), oral presentations, projects, unit tests, quizzes, classwork, journals, debates, skits. Late work on summative assessments will be accepted with a 10% grade deduction for each class day delay for up to 3 classes. Grade will then go to an F if work is not turned in the following class. 4 Supplies One 3 ring binder with 5 dividers labeled: - Lesson Objective and Closing Task - Vocabulary and Grammar Notes - In-class Work - Essays and Journaling - Graded Assignments #2 pencil - 2 Highlighter - 1 loose leaf paper - 1 pack French/English Dictionary - A pocket dictionary is fine. Classroom expectations Work hard in class = a lot less work at home Participate and take notes Be respectful of yourself and others Have a good attitude and do your best Utilize classroom time wisely No cellphone use during Mrs. Olsen's class. If a student uses a cellphone during classtime; it will be confiscated and a parent will need to pick it up at the front office. Use of cellphone during any graded assignment = an automatic F Talking during quizzes or tests before everyone is finished = an automatic F. 5 No pop quizzes. All graded work will be announced in advance in class and on website. Expect a minimum of 6 summative grades per quarter with several formative assignments leading up to the summative work. Students are issued a textbook to keep at home to study with. Extra Help: Students are welcome to come to me for extra help during Raider Rally.
