When? Where? How often? Most days-be flexible A couple of hours on a school night 3 or 4 during the holidays A quiet room without distraction (No phones, Music, TV, Computers/tablets, siblings)

What does it look like? Timetabled Subjects broken down into topics Active: not just reading a book. See the booklet for techniques Varied: the revision timetable should cover a range of topics across an evening/ week: 40 mins geography case study 6, half an hour of a maths past paper and a chapter of A Christmas Carol making character notes

Make sure it s realistic: practise the skill they ll be marked on Most exams have longer written questions worth significant marks, often essay based, or requiring a developed written structure Look at past papers (available online or on google classroom) Practise writing essays and longer answers to time Plan essays and longer answers as part of revision

Stress They need to go out and get fresh air and see people They need good sleep and nutrition They need lots of praise and encouragement They need hobbies and exercise If you re worried they re becoming stressed, please let us know

How do I revise?! Revision is: Successfully understanding, retaining and then recalling information. Revision can be broken into 4 sections to make it less daunting: Understanding Condensing Memorising Reviewing

Understanding This is about breaking the information in a book, unit, topic or lesson into smaller parts. To do this consider the overall theme, then the main ideas and then the finer details This method of understanding can be applied to all subject areas. Theme Main Ideas Details What this looks like: Looking for words that are repeated often Highlighting key words Finding the answers to as many of the following as relevant to that theme: What? Why? When? How? Where? and Who?

Condensing This is using the key information and making it easy to process and use during revision. Examples of ways to condense information are: Flow Diagrams Bullet points Mind Maps Lists Pictures Condensing information works best when both sides of the brain are engaged as this will help memory.

Condensing Condensing information to commit to memory works best when both sides of the brain are engaged. Left (Logic) Language Logic Numbers Sequence Words Order Flow Diagrams Bullet points Mind Maps Lists Pictures Right (Imagination) Rhyme Rhythm Music Pictures Patterns Creativity Imagination Using COLOUR Using pictures to represent words and ideas Writing and drawing on the lines Making each point a different colour Adding keywords to pictures Using curved lines instead of straight

Memorising It is useful to know which learning style works for you when memorising the condensed information Learning style Explanation Suggestions for revision techniques Visual Learners Learn best by seeing pictures, lists, diagrams etc Diagrams, flash cards, posters, post it notes, maps, drawings, videos and films, relevant online tests and games, practice papers, Auditory Learners Learn best by hearing and speaking etc Audio books, giving a news report of key info, recording yourself and listening back, reading aloud, Oral quizzes, teaching others what you have learned. First letter triggers. Kinaesthetic Learners Learn best by doing, moving, experiencing etc Role play, acting, making models, doing experiments, using objects or materials e.g play dough,. Trips to museums. Incorporating movement. Lots of breaks and a variety of different activities and working areas You will remember more if a varity of all 3 learning styles are used

Reviewing This is the most important stage of all - It involves checking and testing the memorised work. This is to stop you from forgetting it! Look at your work then test yourself. - try and re draw the mind map or flowchart from memory. Ask a parent to test you using flash cards. Teach a friend or sibling the information. Complete a past paper question. Do a timed essay question.

When to review? Review When How long for? First review 10 minutes later About 10 minutes Second Review 1 day later About 5 minutes Third Review 1 week later 2-5 minutes Fourth Review 1 month later 2-5 minutes

REVISION IS: Understanding Condensing Memorising Reviewing Revision is best when it is planned.

Planning your revision Plan early Use the Understand, Condense, Memorise, Review model for each revision session. Find the methods that works best for you. Try different methods. Keep to your routine as best you can Schedule in regular breaks Eat healthily, drink water and get enough sleep.

English Language A linear course, no coursework. All final examinations will take place at the end of year 11. No foundation or higher tier. Skills based - not a huge amount of revision can be done in terms of memorising long lists of quotations etc. Students can revise by ensuring they can use language terminology fluently. Students should also be reading regularly in their own time to improve their inference and summary skills as well as improving their vocabulary.

English Language Some useful resources include: The Day - a student-friendly newspaper that will offer a wide range of non-fiction reading. (English teachers can provide students with the web address and login details) CGP Workbooks - Revision guides that also require students to practice skills. Especially good for students who like pictures, diagrams and tables to help them learn. Answers included so students can revise completely independently. Pearson Workbooks - Similar to CGP possibly better for students who enjoy lots of reading. Both guides are available for students aiming for a level 3, 5 or 9. SAM Learning - This website isn t perfect when it comes to revising English BUT it is useful for revising sentence types and punctuation, which is key knowledge for the Language exams.

English Literature A linear course, no coursework. All final examinations will take place at the end of year 11. No foundation or higher tier. Students will cover three of the four set texts in Year 10: A Christmas Carol, 14 poems in the Conflict and Power cluster of the AQA anthology and a modern text. Students need to know these texts well - regular re-reading is essential. Students need to use their independent learning time to write summaries of chapters and character summaries whether the teacher has set this as formal homework or not. CLOSED BOOK EXAMS

English Literature Some useful resources: First and foremost students need to re-read all their set texts! Level 5 target - BBC bitesize provide revision summaries, analysis of texts and some quizzes and videos. Especially good for poetry, A Christmas Carol and An Inspector Calls. Level 8 target - Bitesize is a good place to start but students should be stretching themselves and searching for a greater variety of information on the texts. The British Library website is very good for this, especially for Macbeth and A Christmas Carol. Revision guides - there is a multitude of these available, some online and free (Sparknotes), others to purchase. There is a comprehensive list of these available which was also offered to parents at Parents Evening this year.

Maths Revision Needs to be active and not passive. Whilst mymaths is an excellent resource, students must ensure that a pen makes contact with paper. All students should base revision around exam paper practice, supported with other revision resources before, during and after looking at practice papers. Final exam tiers will be decided after the second Mock in February.

What do things look like between now and June?

Churchill papers - Maths independent homelearning One paper every 2 weeks Due in Week B All questions should be attempted! Use the 2 weeks to look up and learn how to do the questions you are stuck on, using kerboodle, revision guides, mymaths, PIXL App, HW club.
