1 Key Stage 1 and 2 Information Meeting for Sats 2018

2 A warm welcome! Purpose of the meeting: Update on national changes in Assessment arrangements Explain school arrangements for SATs Opportunity to look at sample test materials Question and Answers

3 Move from levels - -Working towards the expected level of attainment -Working within the expected level of attainment for his/her age -Working beyond the expected level of attainment -As part of the national curriculum review, levels have been abolished, due to issues of reliability of sub-levels..

4 Scaled Scores Sats results are now reported as scaled scores. 100 represents the national standard Each pupil s score is converted to a score on the scale. Those who achieve national average will have a score of 100. A child with a scaled score above 100 will be judged to have demonstrated a higher than expected knowledge of the curriculum for their age. A child achieving below 100 is judges to have not yet met the national standard.

5 KS2 SATs Assessment arrangements At the end of Year 6, children will take SATs in: Reading English grammar, punctuation and spelling Maths Writing is teacher assessed with possible moderation by county. KS1 SATs Assessment arrangements At the end of Year 2, children will take SATs in: Reading English grammar, punctuation and spelling Maths Writing is teacher assessed with possible moderation by county.

6 KS2 SATs Assessment arrangements Monday 14 May 2018 English grammar, punctuation and spelling test, Paper 1, short answer questions. - English grammar, punctuation and spelling test, Paper 2, spelling. Tuesday 15th May English reading test, reading booklet and associated answer booklet. Wednesday 16 th May 2018 Mathematics, Paper 1 arithmetic test. Mathematics, Paper 2 reasoning. Thursday 17th May 2018 Mathematics, Paper 3, reasoning. T May 2018 KS1 SATs Assessment arrangements There is no set date for each test but all tests must be completed during the month of May We are planning to carry out the tests during the week beginning May 7th. Reading papers 1 and 2 SPAG paper Spelling paper Maths paper 1 and 2

7 KS2 SATs Reading The reading test will be a single paper with questions based on one 800-word text and two passages of 600 words. Your child will have one hour, including reading time, to complete the test. There will be a variety of question types: Ranking/ordering - Labelling - Find and copy - Short constructed response - Open-ended response KS1 SATs Reading The new reading test for Year 2 pupils will involve two separate papers: Paper 1 consists of a selection of texts totalling 400 to 700 words, with questions intermingled Paper 2 comprises a reading booklet of a selection of passages totalling 800 to 1100 words. Children will write their answers in a separate booklet Each paper should take around 30 minutes, but children will not be strictly timed, as the tests are not intended to assess children s ability to work at speed. The texts in the reading papers will cover a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, and will get progressively more difficult towards the end of the test. Teachers will have the option to stop the test at any point that they feel is appropriate for a particular child. There will be a variety of question types: Multiple choice Matching Labelling - Find and copy - Short answer - Open-ended answer

8 KS2 SATs SPAG KS1 SATs SPAG The grammar, punctuation and spelling test will consist of two parts: Paper 1 Grammar and punctuation paper requiring short answers, lasting 45 minutes. The grammar and punctuation test will include two sub-types of questions: Selected response, e.g. Identify the adjectives in the sentence below Constructed response, e.g. Correct/complete/rewrite the sentence below, or, The sentence below has an apostrophe missing. Explain why it needs an apostrophe Children taking Key Stage 1 SATs will sit two separate papers in grammar, spelling and punctuation: Paper 1: A 20-word spelling test taking approximately 15 minutes and worth 10 marks. Paper 2: A grammar, punctuation and vocabulary test worth 20 marks. This will involve a mixture of selecting the right answers e.g. through multiple choice, and writing short answers. Paper 2 Spelling test of 20 words, lasting around 15 minutes..

9 KS2 SATs Maths There will be three papers: 1 arithmetic paper and 2 mathematical reasoning papers. There will not be a mental maths paper. An arithmetic test has been introduced to assess basic mathematical calculations. Paper 1 - arithmetic test straightforward addition and subtraction, more complex calculations with fractions, long division and long multiplication. 36 questions - 40 marks - 30 minutes. Paper 2 and 3 Mathematical Reasoning There will be two mathematical reasoning papers. 35 marks per paper - Each will be 40 minutes. KS1 SATs Maths The new Key Stage 1 maths test will comprise two papers: Paper 1: - arithmetic, - worth 25 marks - taking around 15 minutes. Paper 2: - mathematical fluency, problem-solving and reasoning, - worth 35 marks and - taking 35 minutes, - - There will be a variety of question types: multiple choice, matching, true/false, constrained (e.g. completing a chart or table; drawing a shape) and less constrained (e.g. where children have to show or explain their method). Children will not be able to use any tools such as calculators or number lines.

10 How can you help your child? - Encourage them to do their best. - Good attendance at school. - Homework - Reading, spellings, arithmetic - Encourage them to talk about their work. - A good sleep routine helps children perform at their best. - Start the day with a good breakfast.

11 Reading Encourage a love of reading. Read little and often. Enjoy stories together, even year 6! Read a variety of different texts comics, fiction and nonfiction Talk about the story plot, characters, feelings, predict, feelings about the story. Look up word definitions together. Writing Practise and learn spellings. Encourage opportunities for writing. Write together.

12 Encourage the use of a dictionary to check and improve spellings. Use a computer for word processing this allows the chance to edit and correct errors. Reading is a great source of ideas for writing. Maths Times tables games. Play mental maths games. Encourage your child to tell the time and to solve real life problems involving time. Practical problems using money, measurement, shape. Games which involve logic - draughts, chess, dominoes

13 Next Steps in School Booster sessions - January March Booster classes mornings from with breakfast available from Year 6-3 sessions per week Year 2-2 sessions per week Additional sessions to work carried out in school designed to develop a deeper understanding of key areas in reading, maths and SPAG. Practice with answering Sats style questions. Children attending these will need to purchase the Sats practice question books which are part of the book bundles as we will be using these materials.

14 Lessons These will be planned as normal with opportunities to practice Sats style questions to provide the children with opportunities to practice answering questions. Help the children develop confidence. Intervention sessions Children who are assessed to be below the expected standard will be given additional lessons within school. These are short focussed sessions in small groups.
