1 ELECTIVES AT THE CREEK for COURSE HIGHLIGHTS ART CLASSES ART 6: 6th Grade (Full Year Course) Students will learn to use materials and techniques employed by artist in their creative works. They will participate in activities that involve drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, sculpture, and crafts with a strong emphasis on the Elements and Principles of Art. Students will explore art history and become culturally aware. ART 6 EXPLORATORY: 6 TH GRADE (1 part of 4 part Exploratory Course; Each is 9 weeks long) -Explore a wide variety of art materials while covering the basics of drawing, painting, and clay hand building -This class will incorporate art history as well as the work of some contemporary artists. Intro to Crafts: 7 TH Grade (Semester Course ; must be paired with Teen Living ) Explore role of crafts in different cultures Develop skills in a variety of craft techniques Explore the role of crafts within fine arts ART 7: 7 TH Grade (Full Year Course) Learn art, its history, aesthetics and criticism Study elements and principles of design using a variety of media Maintain a portfolio; use art vocabulary, understand visual literacy and cultural art ART 8: 8th Grade (Full Year Course) Students will experiment and explore a variety of basic art techniques and materials. They will study the elements and principles of design, drawing, painting, sculpture, graphics, ceramics, crafts, and illustrations.

2 They will explore art history and art vocabulary as well as, learn to appreciate artists and their works. Learn art, its history, aesthetics and criticism. ART I: 8th Grade (Full Year Course; High School Credit) This is a full year course offering one high school credit to the serious art student. This course provides a better understanding of art and its relationship to everyday life. Students will expand their knowledge of the elements and principles of design through complex use of the various art media. Art history, criticism and appreciation are major themes. There is an exam at the end of each semester. BUSINESS CLASSES EXPLORING BUSINESS COMPUTERS: 6 th Grade (1 part of 4 part Exploratory Course; Each is 9 weeks long) Learn the touch key system for alphabetic and number keys Explore computer history and terminology Create flyers, announcements, stories and cards Create basic business documents Learn to search the Internet safely and quickly Use software games to build speed Workplace readiness skills Use formatting skills to create projects WORD PROCESSING: 7 th Grade (Semester Course; ½ high school credit; must be paired with Inventions and Innovations) Design tables and charts Sort data Key business letters, s and reports in various styles Create template for documents Reinforce correct keyboarding skills & speed using keyboarding software

3 Desktop Publishing--Create documents for a fictitious business o Logo o Business cards o Letterhead o Menu o Flyers o Floor Plan Create a recipe booklet Design your own t-shirt Investigate careers COMPUTER APPLICATONS/DIGITAL INPUT TECHNOLOGIES: 8 th Grade (A student must sign up for both semester classes together; ½ High School Credit given after completion of Computer Applications ) Note: This course is recommended for students with a strong computer interest. Students should be strong readers. Previous keyboarding or word processing class recommended, but not required. Build speed using number keypad and speed building computer game Format documents using advanced features of Word Design tables, flyers, fancy charts, and newsletters Learn Access database, Excel spreadsheet, PowerPoint, and Publisher software Create resume Computer Animation projects learn how to make games and animate images Learn digital camera components Take pictures using digital camera use pictures in a variety of projects Use a scanner learn to manipulate images Use voice recognition technologies to operate your computer Improve accuracy through advanced training in speech profile Learn to dictate and navigate through documents Use a smart pen to learn on-screen writing technologies Learn to use special features of a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) Workplace readiness skills Use ipad to complete exciting projects EDUCATION FOR EMPLOYMENT: 8 th Grade (Full Year Course, must complete application) Explore careers that match your skills/interests

4 Develop decision-making and teamwork skills Learn to manage credit, budgets, and checkbook/debit accounts Complete real-life budget simulation that will prepare you for high school financial literacy class 2 ND SEMESTER Get PAID while working during class for teachers at Hungary Creek Note: Must maintain a C in all other classes & must be 14 years old on or before January 31, 2019 Application Required Learn how to be successful on the job Learn what jobs will provide you more income Complete job applications Learn how to create an impressive resume Learn how to have a successful job interview Workplace readiness skills MUSIC CLASSES BEGINNING CHORUS: 6 th Grade (Full Year Course) Join other students in learning how to sing all types of songs (NO audition required!) Participate in concerts with other singing groups Learn how to musically use your laptop using Schoology, music websites and music programs Share and discuss your opinion of other performing groups and musicians. Watch and discuss musicals. Learn how to read and understand music and sight sing INTERMEDIATE CHORUS: 7 th Grade (Full Year Course) Join other 7 th graders in learning how to sing more advanced and fun songs (NO audition required!) Participate in concerts with other singing groups AND participate in the spring competition and trip to Busch Gardens Learn how to musically use your laptop using Schoology, music websites and music programs Share and discuss your opinion of other performing groups and musicians Watch and discuss musicals Learn how to read and understand music and sight sing ADVANCED CHORUS: 8 th Grade (Full Year Course)

Participate in concerts with other singing groups AND participate in the spring competition and trip to Busch Gardens Learn how to musically use your laptop using Schoology, music websites and music programs Share and discuss your opinion of other performing groups and musicians Watch and discuss musicals Learn how to read and understand music and sight sing BEGINNING BAND: 6 th, 7 th, or 8 th Grade (Full Year Course) Learn the fundamentals of music and playing a instrument Play and learn an instrument you have never played before, no previous experience is needed. Explore the different styles and genres of music Perform music both familiar and unfamiliar to you and the audience Perform in at least two concerts for friends and family INTERMEDIATE BAND: 7 TH or 8 th Grade (Full Year Course; Recommendation Required) Increase your knowledge and playing ability from beginning band Continue to learn new styles and genres of music Play challenging and fun music and perform in more concerts Perform at District Band Festival in March Perform at Musicale and experience Busch Gardens theme park Learn 7 major scales, the chromatic scale & many other essential music performance skills ADVANCED BAND: 7 TH or 8 th Grade (Full Year Course; Recommendation Required) Increase your knowledge and playing ability at a high school level Earn opportunities to play in All County Band and All District Band Play more challenging and fun music for competitions and concerts Perform at District Band Festival in March Perform at Musicale and experience Busch Gardens theme park Continue to learn new styles and genres of music Be a part of the top performing concert band Hungary Creek has to offer Learn all 12 major scales, the chromatic scale and many other essential music performance skills JAZZ BAND: 7 TH or 8 th Grade (Full Year Course; Auditions) Open to all 7 th and 8 th graders who audition and make it

6 Experience the different styles and types of jazz and popular music Perform more than any other band at Hungary Creek Play in pep rallies, at venues and schools, and other opportunities Perform at Musicale and experience Busch Gardens theme park Perform at local community functions Perform in their own concert for the PTA BEGINNING STRINGS: 6 th, 7 th, or 8 th Grade (Full Yr Course) Learn the fundamentals of music and music theory Learn to play a stringed instrument (violin, viola, cello, or double bass) of your choice no previous experience is needed Explore different performance styles and genres of music Perform at Fall, Winter, and Spring Concerts Perform in the District Orchestra Festival in March Perform at HCMS for the "Arts at the Creek" Festival Perform at the Musicale Festival and enjoy the Busch Gardens Theme Park INTERMEDIATE OR ADVANCED STRINGS: 7 th or 8 th Grade (Full Year Course; Recommendation Required) Increase your knowledge of Music Theory and improve on your performance skills and musical growth from Beginning Strings Continue to learn advanced performance techniques and perform different genres of music Perform at Fall, Winter, and Spring Concerts Perform at the All-County Orchestra Concert if selected Participate in the District Orchestra Festival in March. Perform at HCMS for the "Arts at the Creek" Festival Audition for Central Regional Orchestra and participate in the event if selected Perform at the Musicale Festival and enjoy the Busch Gardens Theme Park FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE CLASSES EXPLORING TEEN LIVING: 6 th Grade (1 part of 4 part Exploratory Course; Each is 9 weeks long) Design & make your own string backpack bag using the sewing machine. Learn how to read and follow a recipe. Find out about kitchen tools & uses, kitchen safety, & proper measurement. Cook in food labs and make yummy things like smoothie & homemade pizza, and a breakfast sandwich.

7 Identify personal values and how they relate to character development and setting goals Learn about taking care of yourself: personal hygiene, getting along with others, healthy eating Learn about friendship and make a friendship bracelet TEEN LIVING: 7 th Grade (Semester Course; must be paired with Intro to Crafts) Learn proper operation of a sewing machine and construct a sewing project (aprons) Identify kitchen tools and their uses and proper measuring techniques while preparing food in our kitchen (past food labs: French toast, oatmeal cookies, Stromboli, muffins) Learn about making healthy food choices Learn about caring for children as a babysitter and use the Real Care Babies in the classroom Learn about getting along with others INDEPENDENT LIVING: 8 th Grade (Full Year Course; High School Credit) Learn how to manage and budget your money Identify kitchen tools and their uses and proper measuring techniques while preparing food in our kitchen (past food labs: snicker doodles cookies, pancakes, tacos, brownies to name a few) Learn about household management tasks: washing dishes, doing laundry, comparison shopping, menu planning, home maintenance Learn about the family and child development while caring for Baby Think it Over Real Care babies in the classroom and at home Learn proper operation of a sewing machine and sewing techniques while constructing a sewing project (pillow) Career exploration; research a career Decision making; goal setting Learn about nutrition and tools to help you make healthy food choices Learn about the importance of family in an individual s development. TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION CLASSES EXPLORING TECHNOLOGY: 6 th Grade (1 part of 4 part Exploratory Course; each is 9 weeks long) Explore technology and its uses at home, in school, and in recreation. Study the elements of technology: tools, machines, materials, processes, energy, information and humans. Study one of the four areas of technology: construction, transportation, communication, and manufacturing.

8 Projects include but not limited to design briefs, egg safety vehicle, model rocket, and house/school floor plans. INVENTIONS & INNOVATIONS: 7 th Grade (Semester Course; must be paired with Exploring Business Computers) Trace the development of technology and inventions. Construct a model of an early invention. Identify present and future problems and create products/inventions to solve those problems. Build one of those inventions and patent it. Discuss products/inventions needed for world-class competition and prepare a report on one of them. Projects include but not limited to model bridges, name plates, magnetic levitation vehicles and photo shop projects. TECHNOLOGY SYSTEMS: 8 th Grade (Full Year Course) Expand learning through hands-on activities. Learn about designing systems, constructing models, and combining systems. Explore occupational areas for technology-oriented careers. Projects include but not limited to Co2 powered cars, skateboards, wooden pens/pencils/key chains, H2O rocket, and puzzles. TECHNOLOGY FOUNDATIONS: 8 TH Grade (Full Year Course; High School Credit; Recommendation Required) This is a high school credit course so be prepared to take exams. Acquire knowledge in technological material, energy, and information. Analyze technological products to learn how and why technology works. Build and control systems with computers. Projects include but not limited to drafting CADD drawings, skateboards, CO 2 Cars, hot air balloons, wooden pens/pencils/key chains, National Women in Construction shed/house and model competition, and photo shop projects. WORLD LANGUAGE CLASSES EXPLORING LANGUAGE & CULTURE: 6 th Grade (1 part of 4 part Exploratory Course; Each is 9 weeks long) Learn the importance of studying Latin, and how to conjugate Latin verbs. Practice basic vocabulary and phrases in Spanish, French, German and Chinese.

9 Study the culture of these languages. Watch videos/movies to help students expand their understanding of these languages/cultures. FOUNDATIONS OF SPANISH Pt.A : 6 th & 7 th Grade (Full Year Course; 1st Year of a 2-Year Course; 1 High School Credit given after successful completion of both years in Foundations Program) Learn to produce questions, answers, commands, and everyday vocabulary with good pronunciation Learn basic grammar Research and prepare traditional foods (Tortilla Española, Empanadas, Quesadilla) at Arts at The Creek Create and give oral presentation Make art projects related to Spanish culture (Piñatas, Ojos de Díos, Papel Picado) FOUNDATIONS OF SPANISH Pt. B: 7 th & 8 th Grade (Full Year Course; 2nd Year of a 2-Year Course; 1 High School Credit given after successful completion of both years in Foundations Program) Learn to produce questions, answers, commands, and everyday vocabulary with good pronunciation Learn basic grammar Research and prepare traditional Spanish foods for Arts at the Creek Spanish II 8 th Grade (Full Year Course; 1 High School Credit given after successful completion of course) Students will continue to improve all communication skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students will learn to speak the language with more fluency and ease. Students will increase vocabulary and improve grammar usage. Students will increase knowledge of the history, geography, culture and customs of Spain and Hispanic America. FOUNDATIONS OF FRENCH Pt. A: 6 th & 7 th Grade (Full Year Course; 1st Year of a 2-Year Course; 1 High School Credit

10 given after successful completion of both years in Foundations Program) Learn basic French phrases and vocabulary including greetings, family, numbers, time, days of the week, months, weather and seasons, food, pastimes. Students will also be using the language in basic conversation and writing activities. Students will develop a cultural awareness of Francophone countries. FOUNDATIONS OF FRENCH Pt. B : 7 th & 8 th Grade (Full Year Course; 2 ND Year of a 2-Year Course; 1 High School Credit given after successful completion of both years in Foundations Program) Students will build on their basic knowledge of the French language and culture. This will include additional vocabulary relating to towns, home, clothing, vacation plans, and food. Students will also continue to develop their writing and speaking skills. FRENCH II : 8 th Grade (Full Year Course; 1 High School Credit given after successful completion of class) Students will continue to improve all communication skills; reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students will learn to speak the language with more fluency and ease. Students will increase vocabulary and improve grammar usage. Students will increase knowledge of the history, geography, culture and customs of Francophone countries. OTHER ELECTIVES Intro. To Journalism (Newspaper) : 7 th Grade (Full year course, must complete application) Strong writing and computer skills needed Ability to meet deadlines, work well with others, and be a self-starter Develop stories of interest with a team, interviewing skills, following a beat Interview people for stories Cover events, take pictures, and compile findings into interesting articles Publish in our quarterly newspaper Work individually and collectively to help prepare the HCMS yearbook Gain knowledge on the art of photography
