2 Parent Involvement in Education In the U.S., parents are expected to be actively involved in their children s education. It s as American as apple pie. But in many other cultures, parent involvement in education isn t the norm. Parents who are new to the U.S. are often unfamiliar with the roles they are expected and encouraged to play in their children s education. They may also lack language skills necessary to fulfill these roles. This PIE Reader is a life-skills course designed to teach both language and socio-cultural skills needed by adult refugees and immigrants to help their children succeed in school. 3 For the Teacher Life Skills Objectives: Students will learn to participate in a Parent/Teacher meeting. Linguistic Objectives: Vocabulary: Students will learn words to discuss their child s classes, preferences, and academic strengths and weaknesses. Grammar: Students will practice asking and answering Wh-questions. Students will learn to discuss preferences using adverbial phrases, gerunds., and auxiliary DO. Listening: Students will practice listening comprehension. This reader was designed to be self-explanatory. Teacher s instructions are provided for teachers in highlighted boxes with a heavy border (like this one.) Cut-out materials are provided at the back of the reader. 3

How to Play: Stack cards in 2 piles, one for Teachers & one for Parents, with yellow side down. 1st player takes a card and reads it. If it is a Teacher card, 2nd player will make up a parent s response. If it s a Parent card, 2nd player gives a teacher s response. Each person advances one square after a good response.
