1 Course Information IE 043 Classroom: OLY 327 MTWTh 1:00 1:50 pm F 1:00 2:50 pm Final exam: March 20 th LISTENING AND SPEAKING 4 Course Description Listening and Speaking 4 is for students with advanced second language abilities. Students will study advanced Listening/Speaking concepts in a sheltered classroom setting. Students must reach 80% competency overall in order to pass to the next level. Please feel free to ask me any questions you have about the contents of this syllabus. Recognize figurative language and idiomatic expressions. Give extended speeches or presentations on academic topics which utilize reputable research sources. Identify the topic and specific details of Level 4 listening material from selected sources. Retell details and identify main points by paraphrasing and summarizing. Take detailed notes on Level 4 listening material. Intelligibly pronounce Level 4 vocabulary, phrases, and sentences. Speak and listen in order to explore, extend, clarify, and reflect on thoughts, ideas, feelings, and experiences. Communicate information and ideas effectively and clearly, and respond personally and critically. Interact with sensitivity and respect, considering the situation, audience, and purpose. Recognize bias and perspective. Distinguish fact from opinion. Actively participate in class discussions, interviews, group activities, and pair work. 1

2 Program Outcomes After completing the IEP at, you will be able to: Communicate with social and cultural competence in a U.S. higher education classroom. Demonstrate an advanced level of academic English language skills and abilities. Demonstrate the academic skills integral to success in a U. S. higher education environment. Core Ability Outcomes This course focuses on: Effective Communication Multiculturalism Responsibility Assignments & Grading Scale You will be assessed in a variety of ways during this course: attendance, homework, presentations, and a final exam. In order to move to college level classes, you must receive a grade of 80% or higher. Here is how the grading breaks down: Attendance and participation: 15% o You are expected to attend class and be a part of each day s activities. See the Attendance section below for information on what to do if you miss class. Homework and presentations: 55% o You will be expected to complete a variety of homework assignments for this course, including research, at-home listening and reporting, and preparation work for various presentations. o You will complete several presentations during this course: a persuasive speech, an informative (research-based) speech, a documentary project, and other speeches. In addition, you will work with a group to lead a discussion about a documentary that you and your classmates have watched. Final exam: 30% o The final exam for this class covers a number of the skills we will practice during the course. It will test whether you are ready for the challenges of college level work, or if you need more time to study in the IEP. 3 Behavior Expectations In this class you are expected to: Be engaged o Keep your phone in your bag o Participate fully in class activities o Treat every day as an opportunity to learn Be respectful o Be polite to your classmates and teacher o Don t make noises or swear in class o Don t sleep in class o Don t talk when others are talking o Raise your hand if you wish to speak or ask a question Be responsible o Ask about what you missed if you are absent o Attend all class sessions on time o Bring your book and homework to class every day o Turn in all assignments when they are due If you do not follow these rules, you will receive a verbal warning. If you continue to disrupt class, you may be marked absent, asked to leave, or both. If you are frequently being reprimanded for your behavior, you will need to meet with the Program Manager to discuss your future in the IEP. Cell phones Texting, checking social media or , listening to music, or talking on the phone during class is considered rude and disruptive behavior. Please do not use your cell phone during class without my permission. Your cell phone should remain in your bag or backpack. If you want to use your phone to look up a word in the dictionary, ask me first. Please do not keep your phone on your desk; keep it in your bag or backpack. If you are looking at your phone during class, I will give you one or more warnings. If I have warned you and your behavior has not changed, I may take your phone away for the remainder of the class time, or mark you absent. Cheating and plagiarism If you are caught cheating or plagiarizing in this class, you may be given a 0 grade on the assignment. The assignment will go into your file in the International Education office. If you are caught cheating or plagiarizing a second time, we will have a conversation to decide if you will fail the class or not. If you are caught cheating or plagiarizing in two or more classes, you will need to meet with the Program Manager to determine your future in the IEP. Please see your Orientation Packet for more information about cheating and plagiarism. Communication I expect you to check your student account and Canvas account regularly. If I need to contact you about an assignment or project, I will send a message through Canvas. I check my every weekday, so if you send me a message, you should expect a reply within one 3

4 day. If you have problems connecting to Canvas or your student , please speak with me so we can fix the issue. Attendance It is important for you to attend your IEP classes every day. If you are absent for any reason, please contact me by phone or to find out what you missed. Being late or failing to attend class has consequences, which are as follows: Action Late to class (1-19 minutes) or leave early (1-19 minutes) Very late to class (20 or more minutes) or leave very early (20 or more minutes) Miss class for any reason Tardy 3 times Absent 10 hours Absent 12 hours Absent 18 hours Absent 30 hours Result You are tardy 1 time. You are absent 1 time. You are absent 1 time. You are absent 1 time. You will get an warning. You must speak to the IEP Manager to create an Improvement Plan. You will not pass to the next level. You may be dismissed from the IEP. You will be put on Automatic Withdrawal Probation next quarter. See your Student Orientation materials for more information. You will be dismissed from the IEP at the end of the quarter. Extra credit Sometimes I may offer extra credit on certain assignments. If you meet the requirements for extra credit, I will increase the score on one of your previous assignments by the specified amount (usually one or two points). Please do not ask for extra credit work to make up lost points. Final exam You may not take the final exam early or late for any reason unless you have permission from your teacher and the Program Manager. If you miss the final exam, you will receive a 0 unless you have permission from the Program Manager and your teacher. There are no make-ups for the final exam. Late work Homework is due at the beginning of the class period on the due date. If you turn in an assignment after I have collected it, it is late. You may turn in work for partial credit up to 7 days late; however, your points for the assignment will be docked 10% for each day the assignment is late. Work that is later than 7 days cannot be turned in for credit. 4

5 If you miss class, it is your responsibility to contact me to find out what you missed. If you have an appointment or other reason you must miss a deadline for an assignment, please speak with me to make special arrangements before you are absent. If you are absent on the day of an exam, you have one day to make it up in the Testing Center. Your grade will be docked 10% for taking the exam late. Participation You are expected to participate in class activities. This means asking questions, answering questions when asked, sitting and listening quietly, trying each activity or assignment when it is offered, and generally paying attention to what is happening in the class. If you are not participating, I will try to get you to participate by asking you to answer questions or do activities. If you continue to not participate, I may mark you absent. Snow days If we have very icy or snowy weather, please go to the website ( to check for closures or late starts. Speaking English I expect you to speak English as much as you can during class. I understand that sometimes you need help from your classmates, so a little bit of speaking in your first language is okay. However, you will learn English much faster if you try not to use your first language. For example, if you do not understand my instructions, please raise your hand and ask me to explain them again instead of turning to your classmate for a translation. If you hear or read a word you don t know, try to guess the meaning instead of immediately looking it up in your dictionary. If you use these strategies, your English skill will improve much more quickly. 5

6 College and Department Policies The following college and department policies apply to this class: Academic Progress Academic Alert: Students who fail two classes in the IEP will be on Academic Alert the following quarter and required to follow an Improvement Plan established by the IEP Manager. Academic Probation: Students on Academic Alert who fail two classes will be placed on Academic Probation and required to follow an Improvement Plan established by the IEP Manager. Dismissal for Failure to Maintain Academic Progress: Students who fail two classes while on Academic Probation will be dismissed. Student failing the same class three times will be dismissed. Students dismissed from the IEP will have to transfer to a new school or return home. Before a student is dismissed, they may request permission to continue in the IEP from the IEP Manager. Permission will only be given for good reason. Access & Disability Services Your experience in this class is important to me, and it is the policy and practice of Pierce College to create inclusive and accessible learning environments consistent with federal and state law. If you encounter barriers based on disability, please seek a meeting with the Access and Disability Services (ADS) manager to discuss and address them. If you have already established accommodations with the ADS manager, please bring your approved accommodations (green sheet) to me at your earliest convenience so we can discuss your needs in this course. Reasonable accommodations are established through an interactive process between you and the ADS manager, and I am available to help facilitate them in this class.
