Wheelock, Latin: An Introductory Course Based on Ancient Authors (3 rd ed.) [ISBN: ] [Additional materials are available on the Beginning Latin web site ( markdamen/latin1000/index.htm) and on Canvas.] Learning Outcomes. This class will begin your survey of Latin grammar and basic vocabulary. You will also learn to apply these course materials to improve rational thinking and problem solving. Please let us know if you are interested in a minor in Latin, Latin Teaching or Classics (cf. the last page of for graduation requirements). Latin can fulfill the B.A. language requirement at Utah State University History majors need sixteen credits of any language to complete a B.A. Grades: 4 Tests (based on 400 pts. total; 100 pts. each) 50% Individual Chapter Assignments (based on 2200 pts.) 50% 100% (of final grade) Fifty percent of your final grade will be based on four one-hour Tests, each equally weighted (12.5% of your final grade). The other fifty percent will be based on the average of scores earned in individual chapter assignments (Practica, English-to-Latin sentences, Drill Quizzes, DIRT Quizzes). Each chapter offers ample opportunity to earn the 100-point maximum in individual chapter assignments. The grading scale for final grades is A (100-92), A- (92-90), B+ (90-88), B (88-82), B- (82-80) and so on. F represents a grade below 60 and is Unsatisfactory. Any missed work which is unexcused will count as zero. The policy on grades, incompletes, withdrawals, academic integrity, etc. will be in strict accordance with official university procedures. No final (Test 4) will be administered before or after the scheduled time (Wednesday, Dec. 14; 11:30-1:20; Main 201). Make-ups will be given provided that you: (a) give notification of your absence before the test or assignment s scheduled time, (b) present proof of a valid excuse, and (c) take the make-up within one week after the scheduled date. There will be no make-ups for the final, nor will there be any finals administered before the scheduled time. 1

2 Course Procedures. In this course we will cover the first 22 of the 40 chapters in Wheelock s textbook. This puts us on a trajectory to complete one chapter on average every three days, which means we will typically follow the pattern below for each chapter lesson, though the timing of certain chapters will vary because of differences in difficulty of material: Day 1 (Night): Day 2 (Day): Day 2 (Night): Day 3 (Day): Day 3 (Night): Day 4 (Day): Day 4 (Night): [Take the Practicum for the previous chapter.] Listen to the current chapter s Presentation and do the Presentation Exercise. Translate the Practice and Review Sentences (P&R) in the textbook for the current chapter. Do the Drills (Grammar/Vocabulary). Translate the Sententiae Antiquae (SA) for the current chapter. Take the *Vocabulary Quiz. Translate the *English-to-Latin sentences for the current chapter. Take the *Practicum. [Listen to the next chapter s Presentation and do its Presentation Exercise.] *graded assignments Not all chapters follow this pattern. Some have Worksheets (most often on Day 2) which will extend the time allotted to that chapter. Others involving easier material will compress the translation of the P&R and SA into one day. After they have been made available, DIRT Quizzes may be taken at any point during the term. Answers to P&R and SA will be made available with each lesson. Tests (4 Tests; 100 pts. each). Tests are comprehensive but focus on the grammatical and syntactic features highlighted in the chapters studied most recently. Tests can and will include the vocabulary and syntax which have been formally introduced up to that point in the class. For test deadlines, see the Syllabus (below). Prior to each test there is a review provided consisting of a sample test with answers. The format of the sample test is identical to the test itself, but the specific forms and sentences on the review will be different from those on the actual test. Presentations. Presentations are videos ranging from fifteen to forty-five minutes explaining in detail the material covered in each of the chapters in Wheelock. You should view these at the beginning of each lesson. Each Presentation is accompanied by a Transcription (a text of what is said on the Presentation), a Presentation Exercise (a worksheet to guide note-taking) and two Drills, one covering the new grammar in a chapter and one covering the new vocabulary. To ensure you are prepared for learning Latin there are also four Grammar Preview Presentations (Nouns/Adjectives, Prepositions, Verbs, Subjects/Direct Objects). Students who feel they need to review parts of speech (nouns, adjective, verbs, prepositions) and basic grammar (subjects, direct objects) should watch these Preview Presentations at some point prior to beginning or very early in their study of Latin grammar. 2

3 Individual Chapter Assignments (2200 total pts.; 22 Chapters, 100 pts. each). This part of your grade is based on the total score earned on four types of graded assignments: (1) Quizzes, (2) English-to-Latin Homework, (3) Practica and (4) DIRT Quizzes ( Do I Remember This? ). To help you prepare for these graded assignments, each chapter also includes three types of ungraded exercise: (1) Presentation Exercises, (2) Grammar Drills and (3) Vocabulary Drills. All of these are available on Canvas and are accessible through the course web site. Ungraded Exercises. Ungraded exercises are designed to help you absorb and practice the new material in each lesson. You should complete ungraded exercises before attempting the graded assignments in each chapter. Presentation Exercises. These are worksheets designed to reinforce comprehension and memorization of new material. They are to be filled out as you watch a Presentation. Some students find it useful to print and fill these out and keep them in a ring-binder as a compendium of Latin grammar. Drills. There are two types of drill. Grammar Drills are short, on-line drills designed to ensure you have absorbed all the new grammar in each chapter correctly. Vocabulary Drills are similar in form but focus on the new vocabulary in each chapter. Graded Assignments. Graded Assignments assess your understanding of Latin vocabulary and grammar as you proceed through the course. A total score of 80% or higher on a chapter s graded assignments is an important prerequisite in proceeding to the next chapter. Please note that in each chapter there are more than 100 points of credit available toward your point total in individual chapter assignments; however, no grade for any chapter will be recorded above 100. Note also that scores accrued on DIRT Quizzes are independent grades that serve as bonus credit toward your individual chapter assignment grade total. Vocabulary Quizzes (25 pts.). Vocabulary Quizzes focus exclusively on the vocabulary which is or has been formally introduced in the vocabulary lists found in each chapter of Wheelock s textbook. Vocabulary Quizzes use the Practice-and-Review (P&R) and Sententiae Antiquae (SA) sentences from the current chapter. Each quiz will feature twenty-five such sentences which will appear in succession on screen with one word in each sentence in CAPS. You will receive one point each time you define the highlighted word correctly using one of Wheelock s definitions and put it in its proper category (first declension, second conjugation, etc.). Vocabulary Quizzes are open-book and timed (5 minutes) and may be retaken as many times as you like, always restarting at the beginning. Only the single highest score you earn will be recorded for each chapter. English-to-Latin Sentences (50 pts.). In every chapter of Wheelock at the end of the first set of Latin sentences (P&R after Chapter 2) you will find English sentences to be translated into Latin. Your ability to provide a correct Latin translation of these sentences is one critical indicator that you have mastered the 3

4 material in this chapter and may move on to the next chapter. You will complete these sentences in class with help from the instructor as needed. For each error in the translations you turn in, one point will be deducted from the maximum total of fifty points. Practica (35 pts.). Practica are open-book, graded, on-line exercises based on the P&R and SA sentences in the current chapter. As we proceed through the class, more and more questions on Practica will utilize material drawn from earlier chapters. Practica are open-book and untimed. DIRT Quizzes (10 pts.). DIRT ( Do I Remember This? ) Quizzes test your knowledge of material covered prior to the current chapter. The content of any particular DIRT Quiz is based on the DIRT Presentation found in a particular lesson. DIRT Quizzes are open-book and timed (5-10 minutes). Each DIRT Quiz has a maximum of 10 possible bonus points. While DIRT Quizzes are included in a particular chapter s on-line materials, they do not have to be taken with that chapter. Once a DIRT Quiz is available, you may take it at any time before the course closes. DIRT Quizzes are not repeatable. Study Habits. The importance of regular study habits and keeping up in a language course cannot be overemphasized. Please see or contact me or one of my assistants immediately, if you are having difficulties. Regular course participation is your best key to success in language study. Find the time to study Latin every day! Languages are learned through repetition. All this is subject to change. Alterations in course schedule and policy will be announced in class or via the course web site or Canvas. It is incumbent upon students to maintain an active on-line presence in order to stay abreast of any changes effected in course policies or the syllabus. Disability Statement.
