What is this course about? 1.1 Course description This is an introductory course in Italian language aimed at complete beginners. You will be introduced to basic structures of the language and will develop the ability to conduct simple conversations on everyday topics. The course also provides an introduction to basic aspects of Italian life and culture. 1.2 Course content Italian language and culture at absolute beginner level, in accordance with the EU framework A1 2. Unit value 12 units 3. How does this course contribute to my learning? 3 Page 3 Assessment Task 1: Online quizzes Goal: To understand and use effectively basic elements of the Italian language, with a particular focus on grammar and vocabulary Product: Online quizzes Format: From Week 3 to Week 12, you are required to complete on-line weekly quizzes and reading tasks. You must complete each online quiz in the week it is due. You can complete each quiz as many time as you want, and for each quiz you will receive the mark obtained in your final attempt. Reading tasks can only be attempted once. Criteria These tasks will be assessed according to levels of achievement in the following criteria: knowledge of, understanding, and ability to use grammatical structures and vocabulary understanding of short written texts Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level Communication Problem solving Assessment Task 2a, 2b and 2c: In-class tests Goal: Product: Format: Criteria To demonstrate your knowledge of basic Italian grammar and vocabulary, your understanding of simple conversations in Italian, and your ability to write short texts in Italian Test You are required to complete three computerised tests in the computer laboratory. These will test your understanding and use of Italian vocabulary and grammar, as well as comprehension of elementary spoken Italian, and ability to write simple texts in Italian. These tasks will be assessed according to levels of achievement in the following criteria: knowledge of, understanding, and ability to use grammatical structures and vocabulary comprehension of gist and some details in simple aural texts and/or conversations Skill assessment level Generic skill assessed Communication Problem solving Assessment Task 3a and 3b: Oral exams Goal: To prepare a dialogue that demonstrates your acquired ability to speak in Italian; to demonstrate your ability to have a basic conversation in Italian Product: An acted dialogue with one of your classmates; an improvised conversation with the examiners Format: This task will test comprehension of elementary spoken Italian and the ability to provide simple answers in a conversation with a fellow student, the lecturer and/or a tutor. Criteria ability to understand questions, respond appropriately, extend answers and ask for clarification/help grammatical accuracy range of vocabulary intonation and pronunciation originality and liveliness of the dialogue and the conversation

4 Page 4 Generic skill assessed Communication Collaboration Skill assessment level 5.3 Additional assessment requirements SafeAssign In order to minimise incidents of plagiarism and collusion, this course may require that some of its assessment tasks are submitted electronically via SafeAssign. This software allows for text comparisons to be made between your submitted assessment item and all other work that SafeAssign has access to. If required, details of how to submit via SafeAssign will be provided on the site of the course. Eligibility for Supplementary Assessment Your eligibility for supplementary assessment in a course is dependent of the following conditions applying: a) The final mark is in the percentage range 47% to 49.4% b) The course is graded using the Standard Grading scale c) You have not failed an assessment task in the course due to academic misconduct 5.4 Submission penalties Late submission of assessment tasks will be penalised at the following maximum rate: 5% (of the assessment task s identified value) per day for the first two days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. 10% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the third day 20% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the fourth day and subsequent days up to and including seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. A result of zero is awarded for an assessment task submitted after seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. Weekdays and weekends are included in the calculation of days late. To request an extension you must contact your course coordinator to negotiate an outcome. 6.
