Additionally, this course will start by developing basic knowledge about the environmental impacts of various phases of a construction project and the consequences of such impacts including the global warming and resource depletion issues. The course continues by discussing how designers and construction managers can contribute to improving the sustainability in construction by reducing the environmental impacts of construction projects without compromising the performance of the constructed facility and economic viability of the project. A number of the alternative strategies available in design, procurement, construction, operation and end of life phases to reduce the overall environmental impact of construction project are discussed. This course also covers various sustainability assessment techniques such as life cycle analysis and life cycle costing that can be used to estimate the environmental and economic impacts of construction. Students are expected to learn how the available strategies, standards and guidelines can be applied to improve sustainability in practice. 2 TEACHING STRATEGIES Private Study Review lecture material Do set problems and assignments Reflect on class problems and assignments Download materials from Moodle Lectures Find out what you must learn Follow worked examples Hear announcements on course changes Workshops Be guided by demonstrators Practice solving set problems Ask questions Assessments Demonstrate your knowledge and skills Demonstrate higher understanding and problem solving EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon completing this course you will be able to identify the sustainable strategies applicable to various phases of a construction project and evaluate an existing building against the sustainability criteria. In addition, you will understand how the available sustainability and green building rating schemes work and will be able to claim points in a specific scheme for a particular project. For each hour of contact it is expected that you will put in at least 1.5 hours of private study. ASSESSMENT Assessment Component Sustainable Design Project: Fist Submission Sustainable Design Project: Second Submission A B C Maximum Date Mark 10 Week 5 (29/03/2017) 5 pm 15 Week 10 (10/04/2017) 5 pm Mid-term Quiz 15 Week 8 (26/04/2017) Green Building Evaluation 15 Week 12 (24/05/2017) Rationale and assessment criteria The sustainable design project aims to assess ability of students in applying the main concepts discussed in the previous lectures to making decisions with regards to design of a sustainable building. The assessment involves evaluating the choices with regards to materials of the building, location, orientation and massing of the building, etc. A detailed guideline on the design tasks to be performed by students and assessment criteria will be provided by the lecturer. The project report will be submitted in two parts which should be submitted by the specified deadlines. Late submission penalty of 3 marks/day applies. The mid-session quiz is intended primarily as a formative assessment, but is counted towards the final mark at a significant level to encourage students to take it seriously and to discourage lastminute cramming. The exam is closed book and covers the lectures delivered in Week 1 to Week 7 (including). This group assignment aims to assess students ability to critically evaluate current sustainability CVEN4104 Semester 1, 2017 Course Profile - 2
3 D E Assignment (Group Assignment) Uni-latis Discussions 5 + up to 5 bonus marks 5 pm practices. A selected case project (a certified green building in Sydney) is allocated to each group. Groups are formed randomly to encourage interaction of students from different backgrounds. Each group is required to develop a Wiki page by discussing the sustainability performance of the selected building and highlighting potential improvements based on the topics discussed in this course and the available literature. Late submission penalty of 3 marks/day applies. Ongoing This is a formative assessment component to evaluate students ability to identify the main points of the lecture and encourage students participation. A summary of discussions conducted on each lecture as well as student s personal opinion should be submitted using Uni-latis software, which will be introduced by the lecturer. Final Exam 40 TBA The course learning outcomes of this course include a significant level of technical learning that can be effectively assessed in an exam environment. The final exam is a closed book exam and covers the entire content of the course. The final grade for this course will be based on the sum of the scores from each of the assessment tasks. The formal exam scripts will not be returned. Students who perform poorly in the quizzes are recommended to discuss progress with the lecturer during the semester. Note: The lecturer reserves the right to adjust the final scores by scaling if agreed by the Head of School. Satisfactory performance in all assessment components is necessary in order to pass the course. A fail in any component will lead to a fail for the course.
