I look forward to working with you to make this a fun year full of learning!!! I feel confident that our year will be extremely successful. In order for this to be possible, you will need to understand a few simple procedures and guidelines for how this class will be run. The prerequisite for Geometry is Algebra 1. Classroom Rules: 1. School rules are classroom rules. 2. Follow all staff directions the first time they are given. 3. Come to class prepared and be ready to work, in your seat, by the time the bell rings. 4. Be respectful in your actions and your language. 5. Take care of our classroom and classroom materials, being sure to only touch teachermaterials when given permission. 6. Work during all work times. 7. Loitering in the hall before class is not allowed!! 8. No food or drink* allowed in classroom at any time!! 9. Remain seated until the bell rings for the end of the class period!! 10. No spraying of anything in the classroom!! Geometry Course Description: The purpose of Geometry is to formalize and extend students geometric experiences from the middle grades by exploring more complex geometric situations, deepening their explanations of geometric relationships, and moving towards formal mathematical arguments. In Geometry, students will: use transformations and formal constructions to establish triangle congruence criteria develop formal proofs and prove/use theorems about quadrilaterals and other polygons build a formal understanding of similarity and use similarity to solve problems apply similarity in right triangles to understand right triangle trigonometry, with particular attention to special right triangles and the Pythagorean theorem apply knowledge of two-dimensional shapes to three-dimensional shapes to derive volume formulas and consider the shapes of cross-sections and the result of rotating a two-dimensional object about a line use coordinate geometry to verify geometric relationships and connect the geometric and algebraic definitions of the parabola prove basic theorems about circles and study the relationships of their parts through similarity use coordinate geometry to describe and draw circles apply circles and techniques for solving quadratic equations to parabolas interpret theoretical and experimental probabilities for compound events, attending to mutually exclusive events, independent events, and conditional probability use geometric probability models to make informed decisions Course Textbook: Pearson: envision Geometry Student Edition Course Workbooks: Pearson: envision Geometry Student Companion and Pearson: envision Geometry Assessment Readiness Workbook

2 Classroom Procedures: Grading: Your grade will be divided into the following categories: Formative ( Activities, Homework, Quizzes, Openers) - 40% Summative (Tests, Projects) - 40% EOC / Final Exam 20% 2 Homework: Homework will be assigned almost every night. Homework may be graded for accuracy, or maybe graded for effort and completion. Late work will be accepted until the test is officially given, then it is no longer accepted at all!!! Openers: We will have an Opener at the beginning of just about every class. You will earn 2 points for each opener completed. These are part of your formative grade. ISN: Composition books (and glue sticks or tape or double stick tape) will be required to make up Interactive Student Notesbooks. These will be used to gather thoughts, ideas, formulas, foldable helps for quizzes and tests> You will be able to use them on quizzes, tests, and the final exam! I will take them up after each test for a grade. Quizzes and Tests: Quizzes will be given in class. These will be designed to check your understanding as we progress in a unit of study. Tests will be announced several days in advance, and will be listed on the blog. I will give you a review sheet beforehand so that you will know exactly what material will be tested. There will be a date set ~2 weeks before finals to have all quizzes and tests made up! In class work / Participation / Attitude: You are expected to actively participate in all classroom lessons, & do so with a positive, respectful attitude. This includes taking notes & completing all activities. You will be working during work times. This means that if there is a bit of time at the end, you should work on the math homework given that day. Remember, this is a classroom rule. Sleeping/Rude or Disruptive behavior is not allowed! Group Activities will usually include both formative points and summative points. Calculator Requirement: I have a classroom set of Scientific Calculators, and we will use them often. We will focus on learning how to use them as tools, not crutches. If you want to purchase a calculator, I strongly recommend the TI-84+ Silver Edition. You may also borrow one from the library. I have the check-out sheets. Coming to Class Prepared: You must bring the following to class everyday: Your Textbook, your binder with your workbooks in it, your Interactive Student Notebook (ISN), last night s homework, opener sheet, pencil, and paper. If you occasionally forget to bring something to class, please learn what you can do to get yourself ready for class. What you need to do if you forget your: -ISN: Make up missing activity for entering in the notebook. -PAPER: Borrow some from a neighbor. Don t forget to pay them back the next day! -PENCIL-There may be some pencils in the turtle on my desk. Please return it at the end of the hour. -HOMEWORK: If you forget your homework I will not be reminding you to turn it in later. It will be up to you! Remember that being ready to work when the bell rings is a class rule. If you forget something, you must take care of it before the bell rings, not after!!! Taking care of our classroom and classroom materials: FOOD AND DRINKS: *Only Drinks with a screw-on lid will be allowed as long as this privilege is not abused. No food items are allowed in the classroom!!! This includes any candy. Make sure that you clean up all trash and do not let your drinks become distracting to yourself or others. If any problems do occur, I will have to take away this privilege. Drinks may not be allowed while we are working with classroom materials. Classroom Materials: We will use many classroom materials to make class more fun, interesting, and to help you learn. Any student not taking care of these materials will lose the privilege of using them. This is especially important with the scientific calculators

3 3 What to do if you are absent: You are responsible for finding out what you missed any day you were absent. This involves several steps: 1. Check the blog for your class notes, opener, and for your ISN, and get that days notes and homework assignments. 2. Turn in any work that was collected while you were gone. This must be labeled with the following info: your name, hour, assignment page & problem numbers, date assigned, date turned in late, and the reason it is late. Late work turned in without being properly labeled will not be graded. Nor will it be graded if it is after the exam date! 3. Copy the Opener given that day from the blog. You are still responsible for having it completed on your Opener sheet. An empty spot that says absent is 0 pts! 4. You will be sure that you learn the material that was covered in class. 5. Finally, make sure that none of these activities interfere with what we are doing in class the day you return. Find an appropriate time when you are not missing any material, because doing so during class would be like missing another day! Hall Pass Policy: There will be restrictions on when using the hall pass is allowed. First, we will be sure to follow the Rule: no hall passes the first or last ten minutes of class. Second, if there is instruction going on, such as taking notes or doing an activity as a class, you will not be allowed to use the pass. This is because if you are not in the room, you are not learning! Third, only 3 passes per class period. If leaving class becomes a problem, I will take away the privilege of having a hall pass at all in my class. There will be roster sheets for each class on the door that will document passes used and tardies! A few other suggestions/comments: 1. I require that you keep a composition book for notes, thoughts, formulas, etc. 2. Although I do not require it, I suggest you keep a 3-ring binder. No matter what your organizational system is, it is expected that you will keep all notes, activity sheets, workbook pages and homework assignments until the end of each semester. 3. I have a few pet peeves: a. Language - Please use respectful language at all times!! Disrespectful behavior and language, and Bullying are not tolerated!! b. Please do not do work for other classes in my class. It is rude and will not be tolerated. c. Please do not leave your book bags in the aisles. Especially not the straps!! Place them under your desk or chair. d. Do not have out any electronic devices while we are working! Please place your phone on the parking spot on the table face down. Using the calculator on your cell phone is not a valid reason to have it out. I will confiscate! e. No spraying of anything in my classroom. NOT ANYTHING!!! It inhibits my breathing (and others!) and will not be allowed! (perfumes, deodorant, hairsprays anything!) 4. I will write up a referral for any blatant disregard for HCHS and my classroom rules. ***Please remember that all these procedures and rules are designed so that our classroom runs smoothly. This is so important because it will allow us to focus on what is really important you learning and loving math! I am so glad that you are in my class! We are going to have a great year!!!
