1 Course Description Seventh Grade Math Miss G Students will manipulate numbers and equations and understand the general principals at work They will gain a deeper understanding of rational numbers and their various forms of representation They will increase their knowledge of ratio and proportion and apply this knowledge to other topics Students will make conversions between different units of measurement and compute percent of change and simple interest In addition, students will gain a deeper understanding of probability and its applications Learning occurs best when technique, fundamentals, and form are balanced with creativity and practice Students are encouraged to work towards higher-level thinking and to make connections between their studies and the outside world Students are always welcome to come to me with questions and problems before, during, and after school Classroom Guidelines Attendance and Tardies Students are responsible for being in their seats and working when the tardy bell rings Students who are not in the classroom when the tardy bell rings will be marked tardy Being absent does not excuse you from missing assignments It is your responsibility to access your assignments online Assignments All assignments must be turned in on time to receive full credit Late work will only be accepted for partial credit, not to exceed fifty percent You will have ample time to complete all work in class However, should you fall short of completing an assignment in class; you are expected to complete the assignment and hand it in the next day I will always be available during nutrition I will spend as much time as is needed with any student who asks for help Citizenship Respect towards others and their property is expected Courtesy is the rule Disrespectful behavior towards anyone in my classroom will not be tolerated
2 Supplies Students must come to class prepared Supplies will include pencils (NOT PENS), a sturdy three-ring binder with dividers, and lined notebook paper Personal Work Habits You are in my classroom to gain mathematical knowledge, and so that is what will be focused on in the time we have in my room each day When you come into my classroom, be prepared to work from beginning to end on Math Behavior I expect your complete attention in class I will not compete to make myself heard If you have a question or wish to make a point, raise your hand I require you participation This is your class, be an active part of it I expect all students to follow all school rules As young adults, you know what is appropriate classroom behavior Grading Every assignment counts towards your final grade Report card grades are based upon classroom participation, class work, homework, tests, possible projects, and quizzes I will provide you with a weekly grade report that you will then take home to share with your parents Grades are earned, not given, in my class However, any student who turns in 100% of all assignments complete and on time will be guaranteed a passing grade 40% Tests 20% Quizzes 25% Homework 15% Classwork Contact Information Miss G Room 68 School Phone (818) School andreagioulis@lausdnet Web Site
3 Miss G s Homework Policy Homework is important because it is a valuable aid in helping students make the most of their experiences in school Homework is given because it reinforces what has been learned in class, prepares students for upcoming lessons and tests, and helps students develop self-discipline, responsibility, and organizational skills Most homework assignments will involve reading, research, vocabulary, questions and/or related worksheets, preparing for tests and working on longterm assignments Projects and reports may be assigned periodically with written directions given in advance Students are expected to write down all assignments in their Student Planner Tests and quizzes will be given regularly Students are expected to check the class website on a weekly basis D= Students are expected to follow these guidelines when completing homework: All assignments will be completed on time No late work will be accepted for full credit A missing assignment will be accepted for up to 50% credit (Playing catch-up is far more difficult than just staying caught up!) Students will turn in work that is complete, neatly done, and shows effort Incomplete, messy, or work that shows minimal effort will not receive full credit Homework is graded on effort, as well as on accuracy Take PRIDE in your work! If students choose not to do their homework, the following may occur: Students will cause their grades to be lowered, possibly eliminating participation in extra curricular activities and rewards Parents will be asked to sign the Student Planner every night Students may receive lunch / after-school detention, or be required to see their Counselor
4 Absent students will make up all missed work: Students are responsible for all make-up work, which may include class work, homework and exams Students need to visit our class website for their assignments If a student misses a test or quiz, it will be given on the day the student returns, no exceptions Parents are the key to making homework a positive experience Please provide support and encouragement by doing the following: Make homework a priority with your child Provide your child with the necessary supplies and a quiet homework environment Give your child lots of praise and support when homework is completed responsibly and in a timely manner Contact Miss G if problems occur or you have questions I am looking forward to an exciting and productive year at school! 5 The Three Ring Binder; The Key to Middle School Organization! A three-ring binder! It is the best and most flexible tool to organize materials, keep track of homework, and other important information With a three-ring binder, material can be added in the proper order, or removed when no longer necessary The binder should be large enough to hold loose materials in a pouch, to contain all subject areas by dividers and to store extra notebook paper Successful students attend class with the proper materials covered textbooks, binder, pen, pencil, paper, Student Planner and homework CHECKLIST FOR THE WELL-STOCKED THREE-RING BINDER: Suggested Items: three-ring binder (1 or 1½ works well) pen / pencil pouch blue / black pens pencils and erasers tabbed dividers for each subject notebook paper highlighters correcting pens (red, green, or purple) personal pencil sharpener with cap colored pencils or crayons (markers not permitted) ruler and protractor At Home Only Items: markers dictionary (not electronic) hole punch (3 hole punch is best) calculator (optional) HOW TO ORGANIZE THE THREE-RING BINDER: 1 Place the pen / pencil pouch and the Student Planner in the front of the binder Keep the binder and pen / pencil pouch stocked at all times Resupply materials as they are needed This is the student s responsibility! 2 Make tabbed dividers for each subject 3 Hole punch all handouts, quizzes, project directions, and additional material given to you by your teacher and place in sequence When you have completed a unit or chapter, remove material from the binder and file at home for future reference Do not throw away until after FINAL Report Cards are issued! 4 Always maintain an extra supply of notebook paper in the back of the binder 5 Keep the binder neat so that anyone can find the right material in the correct place It is the student s responsibility to keep an organized and properly stocked binder Parents are encouraged to check their student s binder regularly
