1 Supervisory Management, 5e combines the study of traditional management principles and skill-building, "hands-on" techniques which prepare students to become supervisors. We emphasize that supervision is working with people to develop and empower them so they become better and more effective in their working roles. We, as authors, strongly believe that the "laboratory" for management professors is in the real world of business organizations. Consequently, almost all of our research and consulting has involved thousands of team leaders and supervisors in many different types of organizations. We have found some of the most exemplary, creative, and exciting practices of supervision and leadership in this environment and have sought to pass this information along to you, always emphasizing good theory and techniques founded upon practical experience. Our text closely follows the federal government?s report of The Secretary?s Commission on Achieving necessary skills (SCANS) requirements for workplace competencies and three-part foundation of skills and personal qualities needed for job performance and strives to maintain a workplace context and a practical emphasis throughout. A number of changes have been made to keep the fifth edition fast-paced, relevant and focused on building supervisory skills. WHAT'S NEW IN THE FIFTH EDITION Enhanced coverage of coaching and facilitation skills. In the fourth edition, we became pioneers in introducing the coaching and facilitation skills that are so essential for team leaders. Because this information has been received so enthusiastically, we have enhanced the coverage of these topics in the fifth edition. Significant revisions and coverage of new topics. We have made significant revisions to Chapter Five, "Fundamentals of
2 Organization," Chapter Eight, "Motivating Employees," Chapter Nine, "Leadership," and Chapter Ten, "Managing Change, Group Development and Team Building." New coverage of current topics includes: supervision of temporary workers, increased coverage of sexual harassment, impact of high employee turnover, diversity coverage, mentoring, information technology, and transformational leadership. Another Pioneering Effort? Unique Coverage In this edition we become the first in an introductory supervision book to introduce the concepts of developmental and servant leadership. These related concepts present innovative methods to building highly supportive work relationships between manager and employees. The emphasis is on reducing the dominance of the supervisor and developing the individual employee?s innate potential. We believe this coverage is important based on current usage of these concepts in companies that are on the cutting edge. Listings of Internet Sites related to chapters topics. Websites are included in all chapters and are readily identified by the "click" icon. These websites will help students become familiar with supervisory practices in real-world businesses while also improving their familiarity and ease with this important technological tool. FEATURES OF THE BOOK Designed to facilitate understanding and retention of the material presented, each chapter contains the following: Learning Objectives Each chapter begins with a statement of Learning Objectives. Icons for identifying the learning objectives appear throughout the text material. The Chapter Review is also organized by the Learning Objectives. Opening Preview Case A Preview Case illustrates a major topic to be covered in the chapter and piques students? interest in the topic about to be discussed. Key Terms and Phrases New vocabulary is highlighted as it is introduced in each
3 chapter.definitions are also highlighted in notes that appear in the margin. Key terms are also listed at the end of the chapter, and appear in the glossary at the end of the text. Self-Check Self-Check questions appear throughout each chapter, allowing students to test their understanding of concepts as they learn new material. This feature also helps improve their study routines by serving as a simplified self-study guide, covering all supervisory topics within the text. Group Activities, Chapter Review, and Questions for Review and Discussion Group Activities, Chapter Review and Questions for Review and Discussion encourage students to reflect upon what they have read in a way that will help them better understand and learn the material. Skill Builder Exercises Skill-Builder Exercises appear at the end of each chapter; many of them relate to the SCANS requirements followed by many schools. Cases Cases also located at the end of each chapter can be used to synthesize the chapter concepts and simulate the practice of supervision. INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES Supervisory Management is accompanied by comprehensive instructional support materials. Instructor?s Manual. The instructor?s manual (ISBN: ) provides resources to increase the value of the text for both students and instructors. The manual was prepared by Gayle Megginson Ross under the guidance of the authors. For each text chapter, the manual provides an outline and lecture notes which include specific suggestions for using transparency masters. There are answers to the end-of-chapter questions and Skill-Builders, responses to case questions and notes for the video scenarios. Included within this supplement is a test bank which includes multiple-choice, true/false and essay questions. A chart has also been created to accompany the test bank which shows how questions correspond with the chapter learning objectives. ExamView Pro Testing Software. A new, user-friendly testing software program
4 ( ) is new to this edition?s product family. The test bank that is available in the instructor?s manual has been re-created electronically in order to make test preparation easy for the instructor. This versatile software package allows the instructor to create new questions, edit and delete existing questions and print out ready-to-use tests. Video Scenarios. There are two video collections that accompany the new edition of the text. One video set ( ) contains ten skill-development scenarios. The second video set (ISBN: ) contains BusinessLink video case studies. These interactive videos, professionally developed by instructors, involve real companies and contain critical thinking questions that will provide an excellent forum for classroom analysis. These videos are the first of their kind offered for a supervision course. Study Guide. The study guide ( ) that accompanies our text will be a real asset for your students. It has been carefully prepared by Gayle Megginson Ross under the guidance of the authors. For each text chapter, the study guide includes and overview, the objectives, an expanded study outline, review questions and activities along with a feature new to this edition: Internet exercises, called "Exploring the Internet." Web Site. We will offer support for both the instructor and the student. Instructors will be able to download the instructor?s manual.
