This will be the only venue through which families can register for summer school. The registration window opens March 7, 2016 at 6:00 a.m. and will remain open for online registration until March 18, 2016 at 12:00 noon. Grade level course brochures, step-by-step instructions for registration, and the payment process are posted on the OASD website, (About Us Summer School). In order to register online, you will need a Family Access login and password. If you do not currently have a Family Access account, please register online from the Family Access information page prior to summer school registration (your login and password will be ed to you. If your student attends an OASD school, you will use your current Family Access information to complete online registration. You do not need to request a new one. If you have questions or would like more information regarding Family Access, please contact Julie Miller at MillerJ@oasd.org or call Any new-to-the district student or parochial/private school student must complete an OASD Student Application Form prior to summer school registration (this is different from the Family Access account registration). The form is available on the Summer School website, and should be completed and submitted directly online. Upon receiving the form, staff will enroll your student into the summer school entity, and you will be notified that you may proceed with the registration process. See the Summer School website for more information. Questions regarding summer school can be ed to Summer@oasd.org or by calling during regular school hours. Summer school dates are June 20 July 29, 2016 (6 weeks). There is no school on Monday, July 4, NO transportation is provided for summer school, and NO SHUTTLE BUS service is provided between sites. Payment is required at the time of registration with a credit or debit card through the Revtrack payment option in your Family Access account. If fees are not paid by Friday at noon during the week in which registration occurs, students will automatically be dropped from the course. If your student is on Free or Reduced lunch you may register online, but do not pay for the remedial or skills instruction classes, as those fees will be waived. You must still pay for any enrichment classes you register for regardless if your child is on Free or Reduced lunch. Summer School registration will NOT be accepted after March 18, Registration will reopen on May 10, 2016 for skills instruction courses. Grades 5-8 OASD Summer Opportunities

4 5 th -8 th Grade Summer School Registration Information This brochure contains course information for students entering 5 th -8 th grade. Classes for grades 5-8 skills instruction, and enrichment classes will be held at Silver Lake Intermediate School, 555 Oconomowoc Parkway, Oconomowoc, WI, with the exception of Oconomowoc Power, which is held at Oconomowoc High School. Summer school dates are June 20 July 29, 2015 (6 weeks). There is no school on Monday, July 4, Class hours are 8:15-10:15 a.m., and 10:20 a.m.-12:15 p.m. unless otherwise listed. NO transportation is provided for summer school, and NO SHUTTLE BUS service is provided between sites. Course Fees: (all fees are non-refundable unless the course is canceled due to low enrollment) In-District Students - see each course description for fee. Out-of-District Students - $40.00 plus regular course fee per class (see each course description for fee). No confirmation will be sent after you have registered for classes. You will only be notified in the event of a conflict, or a canceled class. Should a class be canceled, an opportunity to choose an alternate class will be offered (if one is available), or a refund will be applied to your account. NO WAITING LIST WILL BE MAINTAINED FOR COURSES THAT ARE FULL. Check back during the registration time period to see if a seat has reopened for the class you wish to register for. Instructors listed in the Summer Opportunities brochure are subject to change. Students are expected to attend summer school daily. Parents are asked to contact the school office where the student is attending summer school to report an absence (illness). If the student will be absent for an extended period of time (i.e., vacation, camp, etc.), notify the instructor directly ( or call). Students may wear casual dress during summer school. It is expected that clothing be neat, clean, and appropriate for school. The OASD dress code policy applies for summer school. No hats are allowed in class, and all students must wear shoes (no flip-flops). Grades 5-8 OASD Summer Opportunities

5 Skills Instruction Course Offerings LITERACY ALIVE 5-6 (Remedial) (Teacher recommended intervention course). This course will offer a balanced approach to literacy, and students will be exposed to current literary practices that build the qualities needed for reading and writing. Students will also have the opportunity to revisit writing conventions, and all aspects of literature. There will be opportunities to make text-to-text, text-to-self, text-to-world connections in their reading and writing. If necessary, students will also participate in a supplemental program to identify and fill any skill gaps that may exist. See action movies, series, movies with unique special effects, Disney movies that are difficult to find, trilogies, sequels, prequels, award winning films, flops, first of their kind, and much more!! 7 BAND ROOM BLAST 1 This band class is for current 5th & 6th grade band students with at least one year of band instruction. Students will have band rehearsals each day, will work in lesson groups of like instruments/like abilities, work on note and rhythm reading, and play some really awesome band music! (Necessary materials: instrument and lesson book from current band lessons) Students currently in grades 5 & 6 Course Code: BAN1AI Instructors: Wendy Matzen, Susan Ohm, Jeff Thielke Fee: $7.00 BEGINNING BAND & ORCHESTRA JUMP START 1 This jump start class is intended for all new band and orchestra students entering 5th grade at Nature Hill and Silver Lake Intermediate Schools. Students will learn beginning basics: how to put their instruments together, proper care and cleaning, proper tone production, and beginning note and rhythm literacy. (Necessary materials: Instrument, lesson book, accessory pack for the chosen instrument.) 8 CODING AND GAME DESIGN Teaching students how to write code, and game design is a powerful tool that enhances learning! Coding and game design creates an engaging learning environment for all students. Coding is the language of critical thinking, and it requires students to define problems, break them into parts, and be resourceful in finding the answers to their problems. Don't miss this exciting opportunity to have your child express their learning in their own unique ways! Returning games designers feel free to take the class again this year. Weekly tournaments will be held, and all tournament participants will receive prizes. If so, this course is for you. The primary focus will be development of aerobic fitness and endurance to set students up for improved athletic performance along with promoting healthy living. Activities will be tailored to meet the needs and goals of all students with individualized instruction. Students will keep track of activity and utilize this as method to learn about exercise, recovery, and goal setting. In addition, students will learn how to develop their own training plan and explore pathways to reach them. Students will be given the chance to learn from professional endurance athletes in various sports. 9 FOOTBALL FUN-DA-MENTALS This course is designed to allow students who enjoy football the chance to improve their physical and cognitive abilities. Students will learn football terminology, schematics, and teamwork while participating in a variety of different football activities. (Participation in this course will require an online OASD waiver form to be completed at the time of registration). 10 MIND, BODY, FITNESS 1 Learning to live a healthy lifestyle starts with a balanced mind and body. This class will explore different medias to express ourselves both physically and emotionally. Students will practice different stress relieving techniques through sensory exploration such as homemade stress balls and creative journaling (collages, photos, painting and drawing). They will learn to create healthy snacks, make healthy food choices, and explore new ways to be physically fit such as yoga and kickboxing. Students will spend a lot of time enjoying a wide variety of activities outside as well. This class is full of unique ways to learn about yourself. (Students should bring their own yoga mat if possible, although some will be available.) (Participation in this course will require an online OASD waiver form to be completed at the time of registration). No matter if you are new to mine craft or already love the program, this class is for you. Students will be oriented to the intermediate school building, and establish a connection with an eighth grade WEB leader. Students will practice communication skills, learn positive behavior and study skills that will help with intermediate school learning. The orientation is full of fun activities, and will give students a head-start feeling at home in their new intermediate school. 12 OCONOMOWOC POWER This course is designed for students who want to improve muscular strength, endurance levels, and/or the ability to compete in areas that require physical and mental excellence. The program will include instruction in muscular strength, endurance training, flexibility, speed development, and cardiovascular endurance. Other concepts covered include learning to compete, working as part of a team, and achieving success all while having a great attitude. (Participation in this course will require an online OASD waiver form to be completed at the time of registration). Students entering grades 7-8 Hours: 1:00 3:00 Course Code: OCONCH School: OHS Physical Development Center Instructor: Ryan McMillen Fee: $27.00 (price includes a t-shirt) PROJECT SERVICE LEARNING This course will help students strengthen their understanding of other cultures, local issues and more important they will strengthen their leadership skills. Student will work side by side with local communities to gain insight into the challenges they face while building lasting solutions to help empower the community through activities such as work at a local food pantry, help to clean a local river, visit a senior center to help with arts and crafts, collect backpacks and school supplies for needy children, teach younger kids to read at the library, paint a mural in the community or possibly work with habitat for humanity to build a house for a needy family. This course is about paying it forward. If you want to read and talk about concerns you and other girls your age face, then this is the class for you! Students will have the option of diving into the world of Nikki as she moves to a new school and deals with the pressure of being a new kid in Dork Diaries or dig into the graphic novels of The Popularity Papers with friends Lydia and Julie. Students will read books from the Dork Diaries and The Popularity Papers series and discuss how the characters write and use humor to think about and cope with situations that come up in their daily lives. In addition, students will experiment with artistic skills, personal narratives and illustrations to create a personal diary! 13 SERIES REVOLUTION: HUNGER GAMES 1 Can you survive two weeks living the life of Katniss and Peeta, and be ready to enter their world? What skills can you learn and what talents do you have? Students, be ready. You will not only have the opportunity to think and act like a Tribute and take part in physical and mental challenges, but you will delve into The Hunger Games series by also thinking and experiencing what the author, Gamemakers, designers, and friends experienced in the series. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be in a Broadway show? We ll take a look at some of the classic and modern shows that have made it big on Broadway, and the silver screen. If you ve enjoyed the Sounds of Disney classes in the past, you ll enjoy this class even more! We ll explore the shows that Disney has put on Broadway (Lion King, Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, High School Musical, and Mary Poppins) but also be exposed to shows like Singing in the Rain, The Sound of Music, The Wiz, Wicked, and many more! All participants will need black shorts or pants, a plain primary color t-shirt and dance or tennis shoes. Course Code: SOU2AI Instructor: Amy Jappinen Fee $11.00 SPORTS UNIVERSITY INTERMEDIATE This course offers young athletes the opportunity to enhance their athletic skills, develop ball skills, work on their hand/eye coordination, and learn how to become a quality teammate. Students will be playing many team games, focusing on flag football, and various ball games. If you are looking for fun in the sun, this is the place for you! 14 STRING SPECTACULAR 1 This band class is for current 5 & 6th grade orchestra students with at least one year of string instruction. Students will have orchestra rehearsals each day, will work in lesson groups of like instruments/like abilities, work on note and rhythm reading, and play some really awesome orchestra music! (Necessary materials: instrument and lesson book from current band lessons) Students may sign up for both sessions if desired. The class will take students on a journey of roads less traveled in the world by exploring countries rarely known to them. The instructor plans on bringing the world to Oconomowoc through various activities such as videos, arts/crafts, pop quizzes, music, fun facts, trivia and food sampling when available. 15 WEB (WHERE EVERYONE BELONGS) AT NATURE HILL & SILVER LAKE WEB is a peer leadership program designed for Oconomowoc Area School District intermediate school students. Current seventh grade students will assume leadership responsibilities, demonstrate good citizenship at school, and in the community during the school year. WEB leaders will be trained to welcome, extend friendship, be helpful, and mentor incoming fifth grade students. During training, students will practice communication skills, increase empathy and understanding for new students, and learn to lead team and skill building activities. A group of seventh graders will be selected to participate in this leadership group. Students must complete an application during May, and will be selected based upon their ability to get along with others; their helpfulness to others; their punctuality and attendance record; their general disposition, the quality of work in and out of class; their attentiveness in class; and how well he/she will represent our intermediate schools. In addition, WEB leaders will serve as tour guides, and help lead special activities during orientation day, and open house at the start of the school year. The two-day training session is required for participation in WEB. Registration is NOT required at this time. Students may apply in May, and will meet in early June to discuss/preview the summer training session. More information will be sent to selected students over the summer.
