1 Spanish 2 Syllabus Full Year Course /2019 Fridays 1:00pm EST The syllabus is subject to change at the discretion of the instructor. Instructor Information Instructor Office Hour Señora Ashley Stickel de Barría Teachspanish12@gmail.com By appointment General Information Course Description During this year-long course, students will focus on developing and expanding many of the areas learned in Spanish 1 including vocabulary and grammatical concepts such as: pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, irregular verbs, preterite, imperfect, future, and compound tenses. The imperative and subjunctive moods will be examined as well. Students will learn about the many different Spanish-speaking cultures from around the world by reading passages and listening to audio files that will allow them to practice reading and listening comprehension. Students will also study Bible verses throughout the course, which will allow them to be exposed to God's Word in Spanish. This will give them a base they can build on to share the Gospel with others in the future. Students are expected to actively participate in class as we practice the concepts being presented and engage in the lesson by asking questions. Expectations and Goals That students would further develop their ability to read, write, listen and speak in Spanish. Students will continue to learn about and appreciate the culture and traditions of the Spanish-speaking world. It is expected that students would complete all mandatory assignments (homework, quizzes, and tests) by their due dates, unless given an extension by the instructor. Course Materials Required Materials The following materials will need to be purchased in order to participate in this course. Students are never required to write in their textbook or workbook, but will instead write answers to homework in a digital form that can be turned in online. Audio files will be provided at no cost to the student. Textbook: Avancemos! Student Edition Level 2 ISBN: Workbook: Avancemos! Cuaderno práctica por niveles Level 2 ISBN: Technical Requirements Sufficiently fast internet that will support live online classes through BigBlueButton. Check out their tech requirements at their website FAQ page. Students will also require a student account through LumaLearn.com to access the online classroom. Students need to have a working microphone for class as speaking during class when called upon is required. Spanish /2019 Page 1

2 Grade Scale and Grading Policy Ongoing Assignments/Assessments: Exámenes escritos y orales (Exams and Oral Evaluations)..50% of final grade Pruebas (Quizzes).25% of final grade Tarea (Assignments)..25% of final grade Total 100% Grading Scale (in percent) A B C D F 59 and Below Assignment Completion and Submission: Assignments are posted to the class page the Saturday before class and are due the day before the next week s class by 11:59pm EST. Turning work in by the deadline is considered very important as it shows your responsibility and commitment to the course. You will be provided feedback within a week of the assignment/assessment s due date (unless submitted late). It is important that you complete any homework that is due before attempting to complete an assigned assessment, as homework is your chance to practice the material that will appear on the assessments. You are encouraged to use your textbook and online resources as an aid in completing your homework, but you are not permitted to use translation tools such as Google Translate or similar tools. Likewise, you are not permitted to use answer keys to complete homework as this defeats the purpose of completing homework and would be considered cheating. You are not required to write in either the textbook or workbook. You are encouraged to keep a notebook with notes from class from which you can study. You will be given instructions for homework formatting. Make-up/Late Assignment Policy: Assignments are considered late if they are submitted after the due date at 11:59pm EST. Late assignments will be accepted with an excuse. If no prior excuse is given, points will be deducted each day. For each day that the homework is late, 10% will be docked from the grade up to five days late. After five days, a late submission will receive 50% of the original score. Deadlines are very important. If you are unable to submit your homework on time due to special circumstances (illness, out of town, etc.), contact me beforehand asking for an extension (if possible). Procrastination is not an acceptable excuse. The Online Classroom Structure Your online Spanish course includes two components, the live classroom through BigBlueButton and the online learning management system (LMS) provided through LumaLearn. A live 90-minute class will be held once a week on Fridays at 10:00am EST on BigBlueButton. You will practice pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar during class and are required to have a working microphone for class. The LMS provided through LumaLearn is where you will find all information pertaining to the class: homework, assessments, helpful resources, announcements, and much more. You are expected to login to the class page regularly to make sure you are completing all assignments on time. Spanish /2019 Page 2

3 Attendance/Class Conduct While attendance is not mandatory and the live class will be recorded and posted on the class page each week, you will receive greater benefit by attending class as you will be able to ask questions and receive feedback in real-time and interact with the other students. You are responsible to watch the live class recording if you are unable to attend the live class. You are expected to participate in the live class by volunteering to complete activities and other tasks when requested. Students who engage in class and put forth genuine effort will gain a better understanding of the material. You are expected to pay attention during class and should not be doing unrelated activities while class is taking place. Learning a foreign language is not easy and does not need unnecessary distractions. All students are expected to conduct themselves in a God-honoring and respectful manner while in class and should not speak inappropriately. Students who conduct themselves in an inappropriate manner will be asked to leave the classroom and I will contact the student s parents Academic Integrity Academic integrity is a very serious and important matter. Students should strive to always conserve academic integrity when completing assignments or assessments. While students are allowed to seek outside resources for help while completing their homework, they are not permitted to blatantly copy answers from an answer key. Assessments (Tests and Quizzes) are all closed-note/closed-book and no outside resources should be used to help while completing an assessment, as this would be considered cheating. If it is suspected that a student has cheated on and assessment the instructor will contact the parent s of the student and the student. If a student has, in fact, cheated on an assessment, the resulting grade will be a zero. If a student is tempted to cheat because they do not feel ready for an exam, it is better that the student speak with the instructor about the issue first than to cheat and receive a zero and lose the trust of the instructor. Communication is vital. Communication Communication is a very important key to success in this course. If you feel you are falling behind, do not understand the material, experiencing issues with the schedule, or any other issue you should contact me immediately. I can be reached most easily by at teachspanish12@gmail.com and I strive to reply to s as soon as possible and within 24 hours during the week. It is best to ask a question and get an answer than to go on wondering and possibly have your grade suffer as a result. You should always feel welcome to contact me with any and all questions. Homework Schedule Homework will be assigned each week and you will have a week to complete the assignments. Typical homework assignments usually include the following: textbook activities, workbook activities, vocabulary practice, and listening practice. Assessment Schedule Each unidad (unit) in the textbook includes two lessons. Students will complete a prueba (quiz) after lesson one of each unidad. Once both lessons one and two have been covered in class, students will take an examen (test) over that unidad. Tests and quizzes should only be attempted once you have completed your homework assignment for that week. Spanish /2019 Page 3
