Your textbook will ONLY be available on the course website in digital form Course Objective: Students will develop a multicultural understanding and use key concepts and skills to acquire information. They will also systematically utilize the decision-making process when dealing with real-life situations. Students will attain an understanding of interrelationships between people and their environment. The content will include, but not be limited to, the study of world cultural regions in terms of location, physical characteristics, demographics, historical changes, economic activity, and land use. Upon completion of this class, the student will be able to: Efficiently use maps, globes, charts, graphs, and other tools of geography to gather and interpret data regarding physical and human patterns. Understand and identify the relationships between physical geography and human patterns. Understand population growth and human migratory patterns; in addition, the effect they both have on culture and the environment. Comprehend the relationship between cultures and their use of technology, alteration and conservation of the physical environment. Grasp the idea of interdependence of world cultures, races, and religions. Use technology for higher-level skills such as research, study, critical-thinking and decision-making. Identify regions, countries, continents, oceans, seas, bays, and other important political and geographical features. Yes, you will need to know where EVERY SINGLE COUNTRY IN THE WORLD IS. 2 Course Expectations and Teaching Methodology Following classroom rules and procedures, as well as knowing what is expected of you as an honors student, will help guide you towards success in this class. If you feel you have been academically misplaced, make sure you speak with your guidance counselor now Classroom Policies Respect yourself, the teacher, and your classmates. Be polite to everyone - students, teachers, administrators Be in the room and in your seat before the tardy bell rings. NO PERSONAL HYGENE PRODUCTS ARE TO BE USED IN THE CLASSROOM (especially SCENTED) Remain seated until the dismissal bell rings. I will dismiss you. You are NOT permitted to line up at the door. Do not OPEN the door for ANYONE. Electronics, games, phones, head-sets, etc. will not be used in class and should NOT be on your desk, unless otherwise directed. There will be no bathroom passes the first and last ten minutes of class, during lectures, presentations, or exams. Cheating/copying on any assignment, quiz, or exam will not be tolerated and will result in a zero for ALL parties involved. Late work, (not for excused absences), will be accepted 1 day late, at the beginning of the class period, for HALF CREDIT. All backpacks/bags/purses MUST be on the floor during class (not on your lap!) Grades and Calculations: Each assignment will be given a point value. Your grade will be determined by the total number of points you have earned divided by the total value of the assignment. This will also be applied to your overall grade. Grade Percentage A B B Cheating: 0 for all parties involved. C C D D F 59-0 I Incomplete Most heavily weighted grades: Current Event Quizzes (40-50 pts), Vocabulary Quizzes (30-50 pts), Map Tests and Content Unit Tests (100 pts), Presentations/projects (varies between points depending on the assignment) *Classwork Grades: Daily Classwork, Vocabulary, Video Questions and Discussions, Map labeling, Textbook Outlines * Other Grades: Participation, Homework, Handouts Participation: You will have a participation grade added in Pinnacle. If students are actively engaged in class discussions, demonstrate understanding or contributing information about a current topic being discussed, being prepared for class daily, and turning assignments in on time are just a few of the factors that will be considered when entering class participation grades. ****IMPORTANT**** You must keep all graded papers that are handed back to you in your binder. If a grade is not entered correctly, disappears, or is eaten by the internet monsters, the only proof that you completed and turned in that assignment will the graded paper you keep in your binder. If you fail to keep all assignments done in class, you may end up with a zero if the grade was not entered in Pinnacle. Homework and Late Work Policy: Most of the time, as long as you complete your work in class you will not have homework (except to study for tests and quizzes). Any work that is not completed in class, can be done as homework if the teacher announces this. If student does not hand in assignments a Pink Slip will be given to fill out. (see procedures) Late work will be accepted ONE day after the due date for HALF credit. It is only accepted if the work is COMPLETE and ONLY IF THE ASSIGNMENT HAS NOT BEEN PASSED BACK TO THE CLASS YET. Excused Absences and Makeup Work: Please write Absent on the top of your paper when turning in an assignment after the due date if you had an excused absence. You have 2 days to complete the assignment which may be an alternate assignment than the one given on the day in class. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO CHECK THE WEBSITE EACH DAY TO FIND OUT WHAT WAS DONE IN CLASS AND TO WATCH CNN Extra Credit: May be offered periodically throughout the year to students who have completed majority of the credited work already assigned to them. Students will NOT be given extra credit assignments if they have not earned the right to call it EXTRA credit instead of oh man, I really should have done work all quarter credit

3 Honors Student Responsibilities and Expectations The HONORS label on this class carries with it an extra point on your weighted GPA. With that, you will be exposed to a more rigorous curriculum, above average expectations regarding the quality of work turned in and the level of professionalism in which they conduct themselves. The list provided is a general outline of actions that may result in possible consequences such as: conferences, discipline notations in pinnacle, and phone calls home. Repeat offenses may result in administrative or guidance referrals for students who choose not to exhibit respectful behavior in an honors classroom environment. If you feel that you have been misplaced, please see your guidance counselor or speak with the teacher as soon as possible.: - Being disruptive - Not completing assigned work - Using inappropriate language - Throwing ANYTHING in the classroom - Cheating (of any kind) - Being disrespectful to anyone Using electronic Devices - Mistreating classroom materials - Habitual unexcused tardiness - Touching any items that do not belong to you (including the teacher s belongings) without asking permission first. A Few Extra Items Regarding the Privilege and Expectations of Being in this HONORS high school class 1. DUE DATES. If you do not hand a paper in on time, it is considered late. If you want full credit, turn in your assignments on time. Every time. 2. Homework: The day homework is due it must be out on your desk and/or turned in to the box once the tardy bell rings. If the homework is not turned in when it is asked for, it is considered late (half credit). IF I SEE ANYONE TAKING PICTURES OF THEIR ASSIGNMENTS OR COPYING ASSIGNMENTS ON THEIR PHONE then that class will have gained the knowledge from the assignment, but will not receive any points. 3. Noise Control: During lectures or teacher-led discussions, there should be no interruptions. There is absolutely no talking allowed during tests/quizzes that will result in an automatic zero for all involved. During group assignments, you may talk in a normal tone of voice (no shouting). If it gets too loud, I will ask that you speak quietly. 4. Testing: All tests require your own sheet of paper and pen or pencil. DO NOT WRITE ON MY TESTS! Make sure your name, date, class period and test title is on the top of your paper You will be told a specific way to number each test. If any directions are not followed, points may be taken off. No restroom passes during tests or quizzes. EVER. 5. Restroom Passes: Passes will not be given for any reason during the first and last 10 minutes of class. If you must use the restroom during class, raise your hand and ask for permission. Once it is given, YOU MUST FILL OUT THE SIGN-OUT SHEET. This document is turned in each week to administration. Failure to properly fill out this form will revoke your restroom privileges.. You will have 5 minutes to use the restroom. If the privilege is abused, all passes will be taken away. If there is a medical condition, please bring in a doctor s note. 6. Tardy: Come to class on time. If you have an excused tardy pass, please place it on my desk and take your seat. I will enter it later. If you are unexcused, it will be entered in Pinnacle as such, and any work that you missed will not be able to be turned in for full credit. Habitual tardiness will result in a referral to administration. 7. Class Website: You are responsible for signing up to follow the class website (just click the follow button. It is your responsibility to check the website daily for important announcements, handouts, assignments, and other important items If a student is absent, they are expected to view the website to see any assignments or information they may have missed in class that day. 8. Map Quizzes:. You will be given map quizzes at the end of each unit on the different world regions that we study. You will be responsible for learning where each country in the region is located. In most cases, a wordbank will be provided for you. You will also be tested on several physical features such as mountains, rivers, and oceans. All map quizzes will be announced. It is suggested you use or TapQuiz to study for them. 9. Classroom Behavior: You are expected to conduct yourself as an honors student. This includes (but is not limited to) the following: Pay attention and participate in all class discussions, respect the teacher and your classmates at all times, stay on task, turn in your BEST work not work that is simply complete and keep the room and your workspace free of trash! If you finish your assigned work early you may read a book (there are plenty of books in the classroom library, work on homework or ask for extra credit assignments. Putting your head down at any time will result in a zero for the day. 10. Notebook: All work assigned is to be kept and organized in your notebook, as outlined in the notebook guidelines. You may leave your notebook in class in the designated spot, but understand that I do not keep them locked up. If you choose to leave your notebook in my room, do so at your own risk. 11. Group Work:. If group work is assigned, each student must contribute to the group in a positive way. Group grades are given instead of individual grades. If students are not participating as seen by teacher or reported by other group members, the student will promptly be taken out of the group. 12. Fire Drill: Students will proceed to the appropriate area (basketball court) and remain with the class. Teacher will take attendance once everyone is outside. No wandering to find your friends! As soon as the bell rings to come back inside, go straight to the classroom. Attendance will be taken again.

4 Example Daily Classroom Routine: Daily (in class): Students are to be in class before the tardy bell. Phones are to be put away and on silent. 1) Students read the Daily Agenda located on the board. This will be on the left side of the board each and every day. You may write it down in a planner. 2) All personal items are to be placed on the floor UNDER your desk (including backpacks and purses) 3) CNN Student news will be the first assigned task each day in class. Students will watch and take notes during the first 10 minutes of each class. 4) Discussion of events from student news and relation to geography 5) Begin daily Lecture/assignment/project/Video 6) Turn in any assignments if any are due at the end of class. There will always be a box to turn in your assignments to. 7) Return books to their shelf, binders should be put away, and your desk and surrounding area should clean CNN STUDENT NEWS Daily Assignment AND Quiz Directions: Each day, during the first ten minutes of class, CNN Student News will be played. Students will be responsible for watching the broadcast and taking detailed notes on each of the stories that are presented. Each day of notes should contain the date of the show. After CNN is over, the teacher will go over some of the main topics presented that day, in order to help fill in any gaps in your notes. We will also hold polite discussions regarding the news presented daily. Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to not only expose students to current world affairs and practice applying the concepts that are learned in class, but to also learn and practice the invaluable skill of taking notes! Current events also help students relate to the culture regions that will be learned about in class. How to take notes for CNN: Either in the first section of your binder, or in a separate spiral notebook, put your name at the top of the paper and, the date of the CNN that will be watched that day. There can be multiple CNNs on one page.. As CNN Student News plays, listen to each of the stories being presented and take down notes on the important points in each story. The notes can be bullet points, they do not need to be complete sentences, spelling will not count, and they do not need to be the most beautiful notes (however, they should be legible!). Notes should be in order in which the stories are presented, and in order of dates shown. There will usually be 5 CNN shows presented before notes are collected and the quiz is taken. After the class meets for 5 class periods (though this may vary a bit), there will be a CNN Quiz given. I will be asking 1 question for each date that CNN was shown for in the given time period. If we met 5 times, there will be a total of 5 questions. You will only be given 5 minutes to take the quiz, and you may use your notes. You will write the answers on any space left on your CNN notes, or a separate page, it is up to you. After time is called, you must staple (if needed) your CNN notes to your answers, and turn them in. MOST IMPORTANT PART TO REMEMBER!!!!! *** IN ORDER TO EARN CREDIT ON THE CNN CURRENT EVENT QUIZ, YOU MUST HAVE YOUR OWN HANDWRITTEN NOTES as well as your answers., IF THERE ARE NO NOTES PRESENT.YOU WILL NOT EARN ANY CREDIT FOR CORRECT ANSWERS ON THE QUIZ. ABSENT AND MISS A DAY OF CNN? YOU ARE RESPOSIBLE FOR WATCHING CNN STUDENT NEWS, AND TAKING NOTES, EVEN IF YOU WERE ABSENT! How do you do that?,go to this website and find the date you were absent. Watch the video and/or read the transcript, and take notes!

The level of expectations placed on each student is much higher than those not in honors courses in order to give merit to the extra point added on your weighted GPA. Students must present themselves (and their coursework) with a high-level of integrity, dignity, and maturity. Earning an A or B in this course will add an extra point to your weighted cumulative GPA! Example: Instead of an A being worth 4 points when averaged in, it will be added in as 5 points, giving you a competitive advantage over your peers. Straight A s is a 4.0 GPA.
