THE FINE PRINT EDITORIAL denial: Duggies Paking an impotant combination A bad issue fo students The lack of paking is an unending some say, a tiesome issue. Unfotunately, thee ae thouss of new students that descend on campus evey semeste who ae unawae of the exteme lack of paking. And students want ead about issues that concen them. The poblem hee is eal annoying fo eveyone who doesn t aive at 7 a.m. find a space in a gaage. Often students think if they come ealy enough, they can find a space in a gaage. Afte all, they- paid $5 fo a pemit they should be able use. Rathe than asking fo the full $5, why didn t the univesity send students a eason fo the incease pio getting the bill? A little explanation goes a long way. Well, the gaages ae filling up faste than eve befoe because of a new cityimplemented odinance. A pemit plan was passed by the San Jose City Council ok effect Aug. that made 8 blocks aound the univesity commute-unfiendly, With the possibility of a $5 citation, many students wee supised come back find thei favoite off-campus paking spots unavailable. The univesity oiginally set its sights on Bud Winte Field help hold the oveflow fom these neighbohoods, which once held up,500 daily commutes. Because it was a tack baely used by San Jose State Univesity, some administas thought this was a decent altenative. Afte some esidential fuss ove the need fo open space, Pesident Robet Caet decided keep it unpaved. But with sweeping iesolution, he s made it so students now pak on the hisic tack field...it s just not paved. So now jogges have weave though cas execise. Too often, students say it s the palcing poblem that dives them nuts. "It s a pain," said Lauen Holly, a child development junio in last Monday s Spatan Daily. "I come at 0 a.m. I still have pak at the Pak Ride." OK, the big answe the univesity gives us: Pak Ride. And it s a decent answe, but duing peak times in the moning, thee ae lines up fou buses long. It s nice that they chage only $58 fo the semeste, but the inconvenience fac is huge fo most students. They added two moe shuttles as a "convenience," but still snidents ae complaining that they wait fo up 45 minutes in the moning, sting in line as they watch bus afte bus fill up. As a esouceful but expensive altenative campus paking, some student commutes have taken efuge in the public city gaages. "Until things calm down, I ll be paking in a public gaage evey day," said Atsuko Yamada, a senio, who was quoted in the Daily last Wednesday. "It s woth it know that I can pak." So now students ae willing pay up $5 a day pak in a pubic gaage athe than use the altenatives that the univesity has given us. The Thid Steet gaage employees don t mind the students paking in the gaage, even expessed sympathy fo SJSU students who can t find paking on campus. One student who was quoted in the Daily said she had tun aound go home afte not finding a space. Taking a bus is also a viable altenative diving, one student said that the paking situation was the eason she takes the bus. "I take the bus, said Ashley Stnad, a nusing senio. "I dove one day... let s just say I ok the bus the est of the week." This is a commute campus, but we say that the univesity has not done enough ease the paking poblems.
