LA SALLE-OSAKA UNIVERSITY LINKAGE PROMOTES S&T RESEARCH To further advance scholarly knowledge in different fields in science and technology, various faculty members from De La Salle University-Manila and Osaka University once again gathered for the annual DLSU-Osaka University Academic Research Workshop and Symposium, which is now on its 9th year. The workshop, held this year here in DLSU-Manila last August 7-9, was part of a continuous effort of both universities to share new academic research among faculty researchers, specifically on new and emerging technologies. DLSU-M President Br. Armin Luistro FSC, at the opening of the symposium on August 7 at the Marilen Gaerlan Conservatory, said that the academic workshop has provided an avenue for faculty researchers of both universities to develop not only collaborative projects, but also deep friendships among themselves. In her message, Tomoko Dodo, director of the Information and Cultural Center of the Embassy of Japan, reiterated Br. Armin s perspective of the workshop, saying that such institutional linkage had brought about interpersonal exchange among academicians from both universities. This symposium has opened more doors between two peoples for the global advancement of education and research, she said. Dodo likewise expressed her appreciation of DLSU-M for its taking an active role in collaborative research and implementing various exchange programs and symposia in the field of education. Meanwhile, Engineer Maria Lourdes Orijola, assistant secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, in her keynote address in the opening ceremony, credited DLSU-M for cultivating the necessary entrepreneurial environment and commitment, particularly in the fields of science and engineering, to attract foreign institutions in bringing satellite programs here in the country. This development, in turn, had attracted more investment opportunities from foreign companies, equipped with quality education from Japanese satellite campuses, she added. More than 90 research papers from both universities were presented in the parallel sessions of the symposium, while six studies three from DLSU-M and three from Osaka University were also presented in plenary sessions as well as 14 poster presentations.

A K O, S A K U K O N G L I W A N A G Ni Winton Lou G. Ynion 1 MAY isang beinte anyos na binatang naghahanap sa kanyang ama sa San Jose, Nueva Ecija.

May nais kang makita?

ALUMNUS LAUNCHES FOOTBALL SCHOLARSHIP FUND Albert M. G. Garcia (BSBA 70), a Football Team star player during his time, formally established his own scholarship fund for gifted young football players in a ceremony held last July 11 at the Executive Board Room of the Yuchengco Hall. The Albert M. G. Garcia Football Scholarship Fund aims to give an opportunity to promising football players to have a Lasallian education. Garcia, who received numerous accolades for playing football in his younger years, said, It is payback time to the school and the sport that taught me discipline. He urged members of the football varsity team to continue loving the sport. DLSU-M President Br. Armin Luistro FSC, Chancellor Dr. Carmelita Quebengco, Science Foundation President Rene Fuentes, and some members of the football varsity team attended the event. Saint Brother Benilde Romancon: Doing common things in an uncommon way Pierre Romançon, whose feast day falls on August 13, was born in the village of Thuret in south-central France. He was so far ahead of his classmates in elementary school that when he was only fourteen years old the Brothers engaged him as a substitute teacher. Despite the objection of his parents, who wanted to keep him at home, and the reluctance of the superiors, who thought he was too short of stature, he was finally admitted to the novitiate. From 1821 to 1841, he taught successfully in the network of elementary schools conducted by the Brothers out of the administrative center at Clermont- Ferrand. In 1841, he was appointed Director of a school that was opening in Saugues, an isolated village on a barren plateau in southern France. For the next twenty years, he worked quietly and effectively as teacher and principal to educate the boys in the village and some from the neighboring farms, many of whom were in their teens and had never been to school before. Small as he was, he was known as a strict but fair disciplinarian. In time the little school became the center of the social and intellectual life of the village, with evening classes for the adults and tutoring for the less gifted students. Brother Benilde s extraordinary religious sense was evident to everyone: at Mass with the students in the parish church, teaching catechism, preparing boys for first communion, visiting and praying with the sick, and rumors of near-miraculous cures. He was especially effective in attracting religious vocations. At the time of his death, more than 200 Brothers and an impressive number of priests had been his students at Saugues. At his beatification on April 4, 1948, Pope Pius XII stressed that his sanctification was attained by enduring the terrible daily grind and by doing common things in an uncommon way. He was canonized by Pope Paul VI on October 28, from

AUN MEMBERS ATTEND ANNUAL CHEMICAL ENGINEERING SEMINAR Advances in chemical engineering education and research among member institutions were discussed in the 10th Fieldwise Seminar in Chemical Engineering of the Asean University Network (AUN)/Southeast Asia Engineering Education Development Network (SEED-Net) in cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The Chemical Engineering Department of De La Salle University-Manila, as the host institution for the graduate programs under the AUN/SEED-Net, organized this year s seminar at the Century Park Hotel last July 30 and 31. The Fieldwise Seminar was participated by the AUN/SEED-Net secretariat headed by the chief advisor, Prof. Kazuo Tsutsumi, 17 representatives from among 12 member institutions, AUN/SEED-Net scholars and alumni, representatives from JICA-Philippines, professors from Tokyo Tech and faculty members of the Chemical Engineering Department of DLSU- Manila. Chancellor Dr. Carmelita Quebengco gave the welcome remarks while Luisa Valencia, director of the Commission on Higher Education Internal Affairs, Prof. Hirofumi Hinode, professor of Tokyo Tech and coordinator for Chemical Engineering Program of the Japanese Supporting University, and Dr. Kazuo Tsutsumi, delivered the opening remarks. One of the objectives of the Fieldwise Seminar was to present research results within the research themes under the Collaborative Research Program, which were carried out by AUN/SEED- Net students from member institutions. It also aimed to strengthen networking activities. Dr. Leonila Abella, chair of the Chemical Engineering Department, discussed in the seminar the achievements of the first phase of the AUN/SEED-Net Project in Chemical Engineering, in particular the graduate program and research collaborations of the project. Developments in the graduate program under the project included the academic status of the AUN scholars, the publications and paper presentations in various conferences both local and international, and the awards/ recognitions that researchers have received for their papers. She reported that out of the 33 AUN scholars since 2003, 14 have already graduated while the rest are currently enrolled. For the collaborative research program, Abella explained that the main themes for research were on catalytic processes for the production of syngas using natural gas and environmental protection technologies. The five-point criteria highlighting the DLSU-Manila experience of Phase I of the project and expectations and challenges of Phase II of the AUN/SEED-Net Project in Chemical Engineering were discussed in an open forum by Vice Chancellor for Academics Dr. Julius Maridable and College of Engineering Dean Dr. Pag-asa Gaspillo. They tackled the common issues in the field of Engineering in the ASEAN Region and solicited ideas on how to further improve the educational and research capacity of member institutions. They also discussed strategies for the establishment of a regional academic society.

BR. ARMIN NEW IALU VP FOR ASIA-PACIFIC DLSU President Br. Armin Luistro FSC attended a meeting of the International Association of Lasallian Universities (IALU) held in Miami last July 28, his fi rst meeting as IALU s vice president for Asia-Pacifi c. Br. Armin said the activity was in preparation for the Cuernavaca VIII Conference focusing on the theme, Academic Applications of Technology, which will take place at the Tetela conference center of the Universidad La Salle in Mexico on October this year. The conference aims to gather Lasallian schools of higher education to discuss innovative ways of applying technology in the classroom and on our campuses and to promote collaboration among Lasallian institutions, regionally and internationally, through the use of technology. The continuing technological evolution that generates new ways of sharing ideas and information requires us as Lasallian educators to evolve as well in our understanding of how we can mine the potential of these technologies to educate our students, who have grown up with new technology skills, IALU President Br. Ronald Gallagher, FSC said in his letter posted on the IALU website. In a related development, two DLSU-Manila administrators Agnes Yuhico, assistant vice chancellor for Academic Services, and Amelia Galang, director of the Lasallian Pastoral Office attended the first International Lasallian University Leadership Program held at the Casa La Salle Generalate in Rome last June Lay faculty and administrators attended the conference, which carried the theme, Partners in Catholic Lasallian Higher Education: Enhancing Understanding. Eliciting Commitment. The program was designed to assist universities in their ongoing programs of faculty formation and enrichment. Participants in this program were expected to return to those communities to be resource persons, mentors, and animators of the Lasallian mission. According to Galang, 52 participants came from the USA, Latin America, France, and the Philippines. Program activities included talks on the life of the Founder, the spirituality of St. La Salle, the Lasallian Association, social teachings of the Catholic Church, and the relevance of Catholic teachings to Lasallian education. Galang added that the Superior General posed a number of challenges to the participants, particularly about the role of the university in undertaking research that seeks solutions to world poverty. Aside from joining lectures, the participants also had time for prayers. Lay faculty are critical to the continuing development of robust universities that are distinctively Lasallian and Catholic institutions. Without a cadre of lay faculty who understand and commit themselves to a Lasallian and Catholic perspective on education, the mission of our universities can be jeopardized. While not likely to occur suddenly, the diminishment of our Lasallian mission could occur gradually over a period of many university retirements and new hires, Br. Ronald posted on the IALU website.

COSCA RECOGNIZED FOR BLOODLETTING CAMPAIGN De La Salle University-Manila s Center for Social Concern and Action (COSCA) was recently awarded four distinctions by the Philippine Blood Center of the Department of Health in the 2007 Local Sandugo Awards, in recognition of the University s support for the government s bloodletting program. COSCA, over the past four years, has been supporting voluntary bloodletting activities in partnership with the National Voluntary Blood Services Program of the Department of Health. The group aims to increase awareness and encourage the Lasallian community to donate blood. This is a special kind of volunteering. It is very personal because you really give a part of yourself, not just your talents and skills. It is a very deep expression of your commitment to the community, Jerome Montemayor, coordinator of Volunteer Formation Program, said. One of the awards given was the Likalibutan Award, named after a character in the Visayan creation myth. It was given to organizations or companies that conducted Mobile Blood Donation (MBD) for the year 2006 with an output of more than 400 blood donors. DLSU-M was the only recipient of the award, having achieved a total of 405 blood donors last year. The Lakapati Award, named after the ancient Tagalog s deity of fertility, was also given to the University. It was presented to the organizations and companies that conducted four Mobile Blood Donations for the year 2006 with a minimum output of 30 donors. The University was also given the Tadaklan Award dubbed after the Tinguian god of thunder. The award was bestowed to organizations and companies that conducted MBDs for the year 2006 with an output of more than 100 donors in a single MBD. Last February 14, the University was able to gather 141 blood donors. The last award presented to the University was the Sanlibo Award, which was presented to the organization or company that had accumulated 1,000 bled donors since the time they started. DLSU-M has collected a total of 1,043 bled donors since the year Salvador Aydante, a medical technologist from the Department of Health, expressed his appreciation for the bloodletting campaign in the University. He said that the activity helped promote awareness among the youth. The response was very overwhelming. Personally, I didn t expect that the output would be like this. I am very thankful to COSCA for their support, he said. I am also grateful to the school community especially to the students. They may never really know the impact but it is really big especially when they see the people who need blood. is published bi-weekly by the Marketing Communication Offi ce (L-163, intercom 144).
