37 The Cast and Crew Kingston Literacy & Skills has been extremely fortunate to have the kind of steadfast support it s had from the community over the last 17 years. It takes a small army of volunteers to run this event. Here are just some of the folks who play key roles in the Bee, many of whom have helped us out for years! Jacquie Costron: Honorary Chair Undaunted by her first year of leading the hive in 2010, Jacquie returned to reprise her role as Queen Bee (a.k.a. Honorary Chair). Unfortunately, Jacquie couldn t attend the Bee this year, but she buzzed around in spirit. Thanks Jacquie for volunteering! Jim Elyot: Master of Ceremonies What can we say about Jim he s been with us as Master of Ceremonies for 12 years now and we really don t know what would happen if he decided to take a vacation in May. Jim is the consummate professional and keeps the bee humming along nicely with his own brand of persuasive humour. We grately appreciate his continued involvement in the Bee. Keep on buzzing Jim! Craig Walker: Master Pronouncer Once again, Craig did a bee utiful job of pronouncing the (sometimes) unpronounceable. We know it s not the easiest of tasks in the hive, but someone has to do it and we can t think of anyone better qualified than Craig. Drone on! The Judges What can we say about the judges...rob Mooy (Kingston This Week), Lisa Ray (KROCK) and Tanis Fairley (retired school principal and current social justice activist) are all veterans at the judges table. This year, they did an outstanding job waiving their noise makers and blowing their horns, and generally creating a buzz. Thanks again Rob, Lisa and Tanis for bee ing such grate ar bee ters of the English language.

38 ...And Committee A large part of why this event is so successful is that the volunteer committee that has organized it has been incredibly dedicated, hardworking and creative. While some might content themselves with a successful event, and leave each detail as it was the previous year, this committee consistently seeks out new elements, and works hard to make sure it is always fresh. While some faces have changed over the years, consistent traits of most committee members are their dedication, originality and great sense of humour. 39 And Volunteers Too... Where would we Bee without our terrific volunteers? Many wonderful people helped us out on the night of the Bee, and we would have been lost without them. Here are just a few.

40 Bee Committee Members Want into the Hive? The Grate Groan Up Spelling Bee Committee are dedicated folks who know how to work hard and have fun at the same time. If you are interested in being a part of this committee, please give Martha or Irene a call at We are always on the look out for new workers and drones!

41 The Last Word While the Bee is a wonderful event, and tons of fun, it does serve a couple of very important purposes. First, it helps to raise critical funds for our Family Literacy programs, which receive no government funding for their ongoing operations. These programs support and encourage the development of reading in families, especially in high risk areas. The 2011 Bee raised over $25,000 for these programs, and for that we are truly grateful. The Bee also helps to increase public awareness about Kingston Literacy & Skills, and literacy issues in general. The more people who know about both, the better. Thank you for your interest in both the Bee and Kingston Literacy & Skills!
