7 AROUND TOWN Give Back, Get Out, Explore! Sports, P8 Friends, Neighbors, P10 Local Business, P12 Five Things To Do Before The New Semester Paige C. Davis Courtesy Hibu Whether you are fresh out of high school or a well-seasoned college student, the first week of classes can be overwhelming and complicated to say the least. But it doesn t have to be. Here are five ways to start off your new semester smoothly. This is called being proactive: Verify your enrollment status Seriously! Just because you registered for classes before the break doesn t necessarily mean that you are still in fact enrolled in your selected courses. Where there are humans, there are mistakes. I ve known a ton of students who thought they made payment before the deadline, but did not, thus being purged from the course roster. Any number of issues could kink up your course schedule. Get the textbook Most schools have dedicated instructor websites that contain specific textbook requirements for the courses they teach. Contact the professor Some tips to help start off your new semester smoothly. directly if you are unable to locate the information you need. FYI: Professors may or may not use the same texts for the same class. For example, just because Prof. Smith uses a certain text for COMM 101, doesn t necessarily mean that Prof. Brown uses the same text for COMM 101. Check out your options for purchasing your textbook the campus bookstore is likely the most convenient, and likely the most expensive. Know the lay of the land Be sure you know the specifics in regards to the location of your face-to-face classes BEFORE the first day. Use the school s website to verify the campus, building and classroom designation for each of your classes. Get to know your professor If a specific professor has been designated as your course instructor, seek out more information about said instructor. It s always good to know a little bit about their background, teaching experience, academic pursuits, etc You may be able to access their curriculum vita (resume) on the college website. It probably isn t a bad idea to check out their profile on ratemyprofessor.com, either. Make direct contact for special circumstances Most professors are overwhelmed with meetings and course preparation tasks the week before classes start. However, you should contact them sooner rather than later under certain circumstances. THE PROFESSOR Paige C. Davis is a wife, mother, and serves as Associate Professor of Communication Studies & Education at Lone Star College CyFair. She is also an author and student mentor at the Professor s Academy. More information is available at In1953 The year two towns were connected by the Baytown-La Porte Tunnel On Sept. 22, 1953, the Baytown-La Porte Tunnel officially opened. The tunnel was built for travelers to safely drive between the two Houston suburbs under the Houston Ship Channel. Prior to its construction, travelers would commute via the Morgans Point Ferry. As the largest tunnel in Texas at that time, it was said to have enough standing room for the entire populations of Baytown and La Porte. Sadly, all of the time and effort spent building the tunnel wasn t enough for the modern world. 10 Friends & Neighbors Local businessman s new idea. Awesome idea for Houston sports fans by T.F. Harris When you think of art, great paintings, sculptures or performances come to mind. But when Gavin Spittle thinks of art, he thinks of sports logos. Because we see a sports logo on a jersey or a helmet, we don t necessarily look at it as art, but sports logos are a huge part of American art history and I think that art is withering away, said Spittle. That s why Spittle created Awesome Sports Logos, a Houston based company with the com. The goal at Awesome Sports Logos is to bring back the creativity in sports logos. Unfortunately, a huge part of business today is cross branding, so teams in the minor leagues have mirrored their parent club s names to grow their brand. What s being lost is the creativity and uniqueness of sports logos to that city. There are no Sharks in Worcester, MA, yet the Worcester Ice Cats are now called the Worcester Sharks. Some of the great names in sports history are now extinct, like the Macon Whoopee or the Lubbock Crickets named after Buddy Holly, he said. So Spittle created 34 fictional sports teams as part of his t-shirt line. I wanted to do it right, so I contacted some people in the sports industry and they couldn t wait to be a part of this business, said Spittle. We want people to wear these awesome t-shirts and spread the word. The more they are happy, the more they talk sports logos and that s our ultimate goal. Some of their logos are historic and many are politically incorrect, but creativity is certainly a huge part of their website. What is the Houston team name? It s the Gushers, with the wooden oil derrick in the shape of an H. For more information on Awesome Sports Logos, check out Spittle s goal is to bring creativity back to sports logos. 12 Business News What s happening with our local merchants. Final Destination: League City The city has seen more money since the hotel occupancy tax advisory board has taken over. Courtesy Hibu There are many factors that go into having a successful tourist city. For League City, one of the main reasons is the recent hotel occupancy tax. The Houston suburb has seen more activity in recent years. In 2011, the hotel occupancy tax advisory board was created as a way to help manage the city s hotel occupancy tax revenue after the Destination League City Convention and Visitors Corporation saw its end in Since the board s founding, the hotel occupancy tax has been set to six percent of a room s cost, which has led to more available money for the city to advertise itself as a destination spot. It saves even more money by doing in-house advertising through the public information office. League City has already seen a big improvement since the board has been created. While the hotel occupancy tax revenue totaled $98,350 this time last year, it s now at $127,500. To put it into even more perspective, 2010 s total tax revenue was about $217,000 and 2011 s totaled $275,400. Still, the board hopes attractions, such as the Boogie, Blues, and Brews Festival this September, will bring in more money from tourists and residents alike. Business briefs compiled by Megan Douress Patriot Awards The League City Chamber of Commerce will be holding its first Patriot Awards Luncheon on Sept. 12. The event will recognize local firefighters, police officers, and EMS personnel who show exceptional service to our communities. Hot, Hot, Hot Mona brings her hotness to Mrs. Gatti s Gourmet. Mrs. Gatti s Gourmet is getting spicier. Mona Cantalamessa has been cooking up local favorites, such as her Legendary Chicken Enchiladas and King Ranch chicken, since 1997 when she started her company, Hot Mama Salsa. Cantalamessa continues to take orders through phone and but recently paired up with Mrs. Gatti s Gourmet in League City. All orders can be picked up at the Main Street location where she now prepares her food. The business booms during the holidays and on rainy days when people crave her comfort food. She hopes to expand the menu someday and venture into health food. For the meantime, Hot Mama Salsa continues to bring out the hotness in all of us! Courtesy Hibu Paddle Trail Improvements The Clear Creek paddle trail improves look and safety. The Clear Creek paddle trail is getting a new look. The $369,600 project will add picnic tables and walking paths along the creek as well as informational kiosks with safety tips and proper etiquette. There have always been safety concerns surrounding Clear Creek. There is now a no wake zone around boat ramps and docks or within 150 feet of a bridge. People looking to use the creek for kayaking and canoeing purposes will also have more stabilized access to the creek. To ensure all rules are followed, the police department will have a marine division monitoring the creek once a week. With no major complaints thus far, The Clear Creek paddle trail hopes to attract more visitors as it continues to improve. Courtesy Hibu 12 Harbour Community September 2012

14 It s Showtime League City Playing Host to First Boogie, Blues & Brews Festival at Walter Hall Park. by Ken Bays League City has been home to many festivals: the Texas Music Festival, the Oak Tree Festival and the Fire on the Strings Bluegrass Music Festival, to name a few. But it s never hosted a blues festival. Until now. Starting on Sept. 21, the sounds of blues, boogie, zydeco and other American roots music styles will fill the air at Walter Hall Park as part of the inaugural League City Boogie Blues & Brews Festival. The event is organized by Gulf Coast Public Affairs, J.A.C.! Entertainment, All Points Productions and Shelley Rogers. Tickets cost $25 for the entire three-day festival (Friday through Sunday). Those who want to attend the event for a single day will pay $15 at the gate or $10 if the ticket is purchased in advance. For Friday night only, tickets can be purchased for $5 with a donation of canned goods to the Galveston County Food Bank. The event s headliners are Los Lonely Boys, Jimmie Vaughan with Lou Ann Barton, and Marcia Ball. Others performers will include Grady Gaines & The Texas Upsetters, Luther & The Healers, The Octanes, Nick Gaitan & The Umbrella Man, and Step Rideau & The Zydeco Outlaws. A gospel brunch will be held Sunday at 12:30 pm, and the event will also feature a sweet-tea competition among area restaurants and a chili cook-off open to the public. Attendees will be able to sample the tea and chili and vote on their favorites. In addition, there will be a youth stage where local teen bands can perform. League City was looking to drive tourism to the community as opposed to the areas around League City, to use their businesses and establishments and not just use it as a pass-through, said Latonia Wilson of Gulf Coast Public Affairs. I did some research and learned that Houston has a very rich blues history, and I thought a blues festival would be a great draw and would be a lot of fun. When the time came to choose the talent lineup, Wilson brought in Annabelle Ruch of All Points Productions. Music is my passion, Ruch said. I put together a wish list of everyone I thought would be a good fit, and started checking their availability. We were looking for bands that had national touring experience and that were also Texas-based. Jimmie Vaughan is at the top as far as blues goes, and when I found out he was touring with Lou Ann Barton, it was a no-brainer. Marcia Ball rocks the house and has the high energy we were looking for. And I d seen Los Lonely Boys live, and they really captured the audience s attention. Marcia Ball, one of today s most dynamic blues pianist, will perform at the League City Boogie Blues & Brews Festival. Jimmie Vaughan was a founding member of The Fabulous Thunderbirds before launching a solo career. Initial funding for the Boogie Blues & Brews Festival came from League City itself. Assuming we make our goal, the city will be paid back in full, Wilson said. She said her goal is to sell between 15,000 to 20,000 tickets. We know it s a first-time event, but it s such a great lineup that we hope people will see its uniqueness and show it some love. Houston has a rich blues history that extends back to the days of the legendary recording company Peacock Records, home to artists such as R&B pianist James Booker, jump blues bandleader Memphis Slim, Grammy-winning swing, country and blues multi-instrumentalist Clarence Gatemouth Brown -- and even a young, pre-rock- n -roll Little Richard. And before that, the hugely influential blues guitarist Lightnin Hopkins made some of his most significant recordings while living in Houston. Saxophone player Grady Gaines, who will perform at the Boogie Blues & Brews Festival on Sunday afternoon with his band, The Texas Upsetters, said that although Houston s blues scene isn t as vibrant as it was in his 1950s heyday, the musical genre can still be heard in the city. It s still alive and well, he said. Every time we play, people come from everywhere to see us. Also headlining at the concert is Jimmie Vaughan with Lou Ann Barton. Stevie Ray Vaughan s older brother was a founding member of The Fabulous Thunderbirds before launching a solo career in the 1990s. A sturdy, sharp-toned guitarist who s able to rock out while staying faithful to the blues, Vaughan is currently touring with his longtime friend Lou Ann Barton, a ragged-voiced singer from Austin who s had a successful career of her own. Gail Singer, president of the Houston Blues Society, said she expects League City s newest festival to go over well. Her organization is one of the event s sponsors. Last spring, we participated in the Kemah Crawfish Festival [on Galveston Bay], which was beyond our expectations in terms of crowd interest and participation at the blues stage, Singer said. That s what convinced us to branch out and engage more with communities like this one. I have no doubt it will be a wonderful experience for everyone who attends. There s a bit of blues lover in everyone, right? For the League City Boogie Blues & Brews Festival s full schedule or to purchase tickets, please go to Headliners at the festival Marcia Ball: Born in Orange, Tx., and raised in nearby Vinton, La., Ball is one of today s most dynamic blues pianists. A frequent winner of the Blues Foundation s annual award for Piano Player of the Year, Ball is also an accomplished songwriter, with a dozen albums under her belt. Los Lonely Boys: Admirers of this band of Texas-born brothers 2004 pop/rock hit Heaven may not realize that the trio is actually steeped in the blues tradition. They also play some mean Tex-Mex music, making them one of the most eclectic acts to appear at the Boogie Blues & Brews Festival. Henry, Jojo and Ringo Garza are a high-energy trio who have opened for The Rolling Stones, recorded with Willie Nelson and racked up numerous fans in the process. Harbour Community September

16 Do you know what they re looking at? Courtesy Hibu by Danielle Zimmerman Whether we re searching for answers to nagging questions or quelling boredom, many of us find ourselves logging in, streaming, gaming, blogging, searching and posting on the Internet. It s an amazing tool but it s not without its flaws. Stories about online predators, trolls and cyberbullies have plagued the Internet in recent years. More of our children are using the Internet than ever before. A parent s first reaction might be to shield the child from danger by limiting his or her access. However, Anne Collier, co-director of ConnectSafely.org and editor of NetFamilyNews.org, encourages concerned parents to get involved rather than ban Internet use altogether. This is our environment -- it s a global network world, Collier said. To keep your children offline is stunting their personal and professional development. It marginalizes them, because most of their friends are online. It s better to work with them to use digital media wisely than to ban it. They re safer if they learn to develop a filter. According to Teen 2012 Truth, Trends and Myths about Teen Online Behavior, a study by the Pew Research Center, 82 percent of 13-year-old Internet users have social networking accounts on services such as Facebook, Twitter and Myspace. Just as we taught our children about stranger danger when they were first permitted to walk to their friend s house alone or play outside without supervision, we must explain the risks of putting personal information on the Internet for anyone to see and use. Identifying information such as phone numbers or home addresses have no business on the Internet, even if an account you re signing up for asks for it. Sit with your preteen when they create new accounts so you can teach them what information is appropriate to include during the signup process. Whenever possible, children should opt for strict privacy settings for all their accounts. Facebook provides options that will keep your page completely private from the general public. Keep personal information to a minimum, and only add close friends and family. Explain to your tween that they may be solicited by unknown people who are trying to friend them. Although the profile may appear to be a boy or girl their age, they can t know for sure who s behind the page unless they know them personally. This rule applies to s and messages, too. With all the technological advancements of cellphones, many children are toting the Web in their back pockets. One offshoot of the on-the-go Internet access phenomenon has been the rise Perhaps one of the most important lessons when it comes to your child s long-term development as an Internet user is to simply think before posting. of location-based applications such as foursquare. Users can check in to a location to earn badges and bragging rights, inadvertently letting strangers know where they are. Again, your child is safer on these location-based sites if they limit their contacts to close friends and family. As a precautionary measure, only check in as you re about to leave a location, and avoid checking in to places that you frequent, such as home, school or work. Perhaps one of the most important lessons when it comes to your child s long-term development as an Internet user is to simply think before posting. From status updates and photos to s and comments, your child needs to understand that there are consequences for what is said and done online. Remember that for most preteens, the Internet is an extension of their existing social lives. Collier said, Our kids online experiences are a reflection of who they are and how they act every day. We ll learn more about our children s online experiences by doing the same thing we do to understand all aspects of their personal lives: Asking questions. Fold the Internet into everyday family life and communication, Collier suggested, and as trust develops, your rules about the Internet can change. By using that approach, it s easier to become involved. As parents, we inquire about topics such as school and our children s friendships to gauge how things are going in their lives. Your child s Internet use is just another thing to chat about around the dinner table. 16 Harbour Community September 2012

18 Chargers confident they have what it takes to win it all Clear Springs High School Football Team Have Their Sights Set On 5A Glory This Football Season. by T.F. Harris T.F. Harris All attention is on Clear Springs Coach Clint Hartman and his Chargers this Fall. As far as Clear Springs football coach Clint Hartman is concerned, the goal for his Chargers is real simple. It s the one constant around these parts. We have one goal every season and that s to win a state championship, he said. Only time will tell whether or not the school s first 5A state championship is in the offing, but it would be hard to bet against them. With a wealth of talent and experience returning from last year s youthful team, that stunned most by going undefeated in district and advancing to the second round of the playoffs, the Chargers could be poised to go far this upcoming season. They certainly seem to believe they can. I m hoping we go to state, said 6-foot-5, 290-pound left tackle Patrick Winfield. Everyone was saying last year we were too young and we ended up winning district. If you can play varsity, you can play varsity no matter how old you are. I hope we have a pretty good season this year. The signs seem to be pointing in the Chargers favor. Junior quarterback Zach Cripps returns a year stronger while junior receiver Matt Wymyczak is one of the top threats in the area and they have a experienced offensive line anchored by Winfield. The tailback spot will be manned to two talented sophomores in Michael Dunn and Jaysedcric Lamb. Hartman seems especially optimistic with Cripps, who is now a year older and year more experience. It wasn t always smooth last season but clearly bigger things are expected this time around. I think he made some young mistakes last year but now he owns the offense, he knows what it s about, Hartman said. We put a lot on our quarterback because we throw the ball more than anybody in the Houston area. We are putting a lot on these kids and I think some of the struggle will help him but he will have a very good junior year. Defensively the Chargers return six starters from last year s unit headlined by senior linebacker Cameron Doubenmier and senior defensive back Lee Patak. Players on both sides of the ball are still smarting from last season s second round playoff loss to Port Arthur Memorial 18 Harbour Community September 2012

19 that ended a string of eight straight wins after the Chargers opened the year 0-3. They ve used the memory of the playoff loss as motivation through spring conditioning, summer conditioning and fall two-adays camp. Now they are ready to prove they are capable of taking it to the next level on the football field this season. A lot of people had a lot of doubts about us because we had lost all those seniors, good talent, D-I talent, said Doubenmier, who is 6-foot, 210 pounds. We started off rough but we came strong. Now we have a lot of hope for this season because we have really bonded as a team. We hung out together over the weekends to try to stay out of trouble. The goal is the state title bar none. But to get there the Chargers will have to make it through a grueling 24-5A District that includes Friendswood Clear Brook, Clute Brazoswood and Clear Creek. This is where the offseason work and the bonding that has taken place with many of these players will be put through the test. Once we come together, we can be unstoppable, Doubenmier said. It doesn t matter what kind of talent you have as long as you ve got the heart. The Chargers will certainly have the backing of their community, which has become one of the most enthusiastic fan bases in the region since the program made it all the way to the fourth round of the playoffs in What we ve tried to do here is we ve tried to create a small town community in a big city, said Hartman, whose team went 8-4 last season. I think we do a good job of that. America is still America, people get behind people who win games. Our job is to win games and the people will show up. 20 Academy Preparing Future Entrepreneurs Keyana Williams dream of helping area children has turned into a reality with the opening of the Biz Kid Academy. by T.F. Harris One evening Keyana Williams and her husband Robert, were sitting around discussing his new business, Organo Gold, and what was involved in the startup of the healthy coffee business. Keyana couldn t help but wonder, Wow, what if we had all of this knowledge when we were kids? From such a simple thought came a great idea to launch Biz Kid Academy, a not-for-profit organization which has a mission to teach and prepare young people to become business owners and entrepreneurs. So Keyana, with the help of Robert, went to work planning The Academy. We just thought it would be so great to have kids learn that too, because we didn t have that when we were growing up, Robert said. We were taught We don t have the money then go get credit and then end up in a whole lot of debt years later. Keyana saw her vision come to reality in July when she held her first month-long camp on the main University of Houston campus. The third-grade school teacher put the students, grades 5 through 8, through a four day a week camp for three hours a day where they learned how to turn an idea into a business plan and how to then set up and grow a business. The camp, which hosted students from all social and economic backgrounds in the Houston area and surrounding communities like The Woodlands, Memorial and Harbour Communities, culminated on July 28th with a showcase in which the 39 students presented their businesses to the community. The students presented business models in the areas of baking, banking, hair salons, nail salons, media companies, coaching and music. It s exciting too because being older you think about maybe starting your business one day but to see like 10-year-olds and 11-year-olds actually putting the work in and coming up with a business plan, it s kind of crazy, Robert said. You always think they only think about video games, but the kids that we have are really excited about starting their own business. And the idea is once they have it that they take it outside of Biz Kid Academy and use it to earn money for years and years and years. We also try to help them try to figure out what they want Campers check out the different presentations at Biz Camp. While The Academy currently consist of only the summer camp, Williams hopes to eventually extend her outreach to include Saturday classes and an after-school program. to do when they grow up, if they want a career in a traditional job or own their own business, Keyana added. If nothing else they will start thinking about their future. While The Academy currently consist of only the summer camp, Keyana hopes to eventually extend her outreach to include Saturday classes and an after-school program. During our conversation, Keyana discussed the goal of Biz Kid 20 Harbour Community September 2012

21 How It All Works The program is actually three stages. Stage 1 is introduction to what is a business and what is an entrepreneur. Stage 2 would be foundation, where we go over the basics of business, ethics, the financial part of starting a business. Stage 3 would be marketing, how do you market your business, how do you attract customers, how do you advertise a business. Academy and the success it enjoyed this summer. Q: So how did the first summer of the program go? Keyana: Everything that I planned it to be it became. Q: How do you go about teaching the students how to start a business? Keyana: The program is actually three stages. Stage 1 is introduction to what is a business and what is an entrepreneur. Stage 2 would be foundation, where we go over the basics of business, ethics, the financial part of starting a business. Stage 3 would be marketing, how do you market your business, how do you attract customers, how do you advertise a business. Courtesy Keyana Williams Campers are all smiles as they present their business plan. They are actually creating and planning a business that they will want to start. So the goal is by the end of the camp they have an actual business plan that they can take to investors to get started. Q: So what all did the kids accomplish during the month-long camp? Keyana: They set up mock businesses complete with marketing plans, a business poster, mock business cards, resumes and a website. 24 Film Festival Lights, Camera, Action... The 2012 Gulf Coast Film & Video Festival will take place Thursday, Sept. 13, through Sunday, Sept. 16. by Kenneth Bays Courtesy Film & Video Festival You don t have to be an aspiring filmmaker to enjoy the Gulf Coast Film & Video Festival. All you need is an appreciation for the silver screen and its remarkable ability to make you laugh, cry or think. And judging by the estimate given by festival founder Hal Wixon, the Houston area must be full of film fans. Wixon said between 1,800 and 2,000 people typically turn out for the annual event, now in its 14th year. The thing that makes me happiest, said Wixon, a University of Houston graduate who has himself acted in films, is that at every festival, people come up to me and say, It was really fun. We had a great time, and it gets better every year. The 2012 Gulf Coast Film & Video Festival will take place Thursday, Sept. 13, through Sunday, Sept. 16, at locations around Houston s Bay area. For the first time, the festival will be a four-day event, kicking off Thursday evening at the Star Cinema Grill in Webster with showings of two films submitted to this year s competition: Bernie, a comedy directed by Richard Linklater, and The Loop, a crime drama directed by Jason Shutt. Between the two screenings, Linklater and Shutt will participate in a question-and-answer workshop during which hopeful filmmakers in the audience can get advice on the art of making movies. On Friday evening, the organization s 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award winner -- actress Cynthia Geary, who played Shelly Tambo on the popular 1990s television series Northern Exposure -- will participate in a celebrity meet-and-greet at Villa Capri on the Lake in Seabrook. Wixon said Geary was selected as this year s recipient for her longevity in the industry. She s been working ever since she left Northern Exposure, he said. The core of the festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday, when the Star Cinema Grill will host screenings of 25 to 30 of this year s submitted independent films -- both feature-length and short, in genres that include comedy, drama, action, love, music, horror, animation and documentary. Winners in each category will be 24 Harbour Community September 2012 announced at an awards banquet Saturday evening, an event open only to the first 200 people who purchase tickets. Wixon founded the film festival in 1999, one year after a crowd of film buffs began gathering for what he calls a networking group in the Bay area. We had people from all aspects of the film industry come out and speak once a month, he explains, and at some point, one of our members suggested we put together a film festival. None of us knew anything about film festivals, so we started blindly. With some help from people at film organizations here in town, and from colleagues of mine at the University of Houston, we managed to make it work. FESTIVAL FACTS More than 200 films were submitted to the festival this year. Winning films are chosen by an outside group of four movie-industry professionals whose identities are kept anonymous. Directors of winning films have gone on to work at studios in Los Angeles, New York City and Canada. Festival founder Hal Wixon appeared in the 1999 thriller Arlington Road alongside stars Jeff Bridges and Tim Robbins. Jon Lovitz, 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award Winner. Cheryl Tiegs, 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award Winner. The 2012 Gulf Coast Film & Video Festival will take place at locations around Houston s Bay area. Courtesy Film & Video Festival Courtesy Hibu

30 And Another Thing... Plant a Rain Garden Make this hurricane season a little easier to manage. by Megan Douress September marks the heart of hurricane season here in Texas. There are many precautions that need to be taken around this time of year but something as small as planting a rain garden in your yard can help manage the damage many of us run into. This process will take about $1,000. You ll want to use mostly native plants to ensure they survive. Start by deciding where the most water is collected in your yard or driveway. You want to place the garden about 10 feet away from your home and septic system to prevent potential water damage. Dig four inches down, making sure the size of the garden is twice the length than width. Fill in with gravel, followed by a combination of tillage, compost and sand. Then, simply choose your favorite native plants and trees to plant with mulch. You want to place the garden about 10 feet away from your home and septic system. Planting a rain garden can help in the long run. Dig four inches down, making sure the size of the garden is twice the length than width. 30 Harbour Community September 2012
