The fourth largest public dental school in the United States, OSU COD consists of 10 divisions with seven advanced education programs, including a dental hygiene graduate program. The college offers students interprofessional collaboration, hands-on experience in patient clinics, and extensive community services programs. Sample topics include success strategies for recruitment and retention, best practice in financial aid, diversity and inclusion strategies and initiatives, social media strategies in recruitment and retention, effective communication systems and strategies, student involvement, leadership, engagement opportunities and challenges, and creating a humanistic culture at the college. Explain the broad scope of the dental student experience from admissions to graduation. During each 30-minute round, participants will select one of three different discussions to join, each facilitated by presenters from the morning. Just as the morning Short Talks focused on topics spanning the full cycle of the dental student experience, these small group discussions will unpack these topics in more depth and allow participants to raise questions and share best practices from their own institutions and experiences. Describe trends and best practices from a broad scope of topics related to the dental student experience, from admissions to graduation. Along the way, misperceptions and myths about dental education have surfaced in the health care community. Join Dr. Valachovic as he talks about some of these common myths and busts them using information from the current edition of the ADEA Snapshot of Dental Education. Describe key trends in health care and dental education. Explain common myths about dental education and the facts that bust each myth. In this session, presenters will share their methods for determining hand skill competence in their own programs and will then lead a discussion about best practices. We will explore available resources to help schools prepare their students and graduates to deal with these changes. Identify proposed changes and possible implementation dates for changes to financial aid. Identify and discuss potential institutional policy implications. Identify effective communication strategies for informing students and alumni of changes. Identify possible implications for students and graduates interested in academic dentistry. U.S. dental school staff are encouraged to exchange information so the Canadian Faculties of Dentistry representatives can learn about application and admissions processes and procedures common to U.S. dental schools. Compare and contrast admissions procedures, application statistics, financial and academic support resources between the U.S. and Canadian dental schools. The session will highlight the kinds of opportunities, through mentorship, leadership, involvement, research, service and so on, and the specific resources outside the classroom that had the biggest impact on their dental school experiences and supported their academic, personal and professional goals and success. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session. Interpret students and residents perspectives on how the dental school experience prepares students to graduate and pursue their career goals. Summarize students and residents perspectives on the resources, experiences, and opportunities that had the greatest impact on their dental school experience and helping them feel prepared for life after graduation. Identify best practices in recruitment, student life, academic support, mentorship and leadership opportunities and resources that may be implemented at your institution. CE Credits 1.5 Noon 1:00 p.m. Joint Networking Lunch 1:00 2:30 p.m. The Online Offsite Learner: Strategies for Success (Co-sponsored With the ADEA Section on Academic Affairs Academic Deans) Presenter Sara Gordon, D.D.S., M.S., University of Washington School of Dentistry The facilitator will introduce the session to set the stage about trends in teaching and learning in dental education on the use of online and asynchronous learning technologies, and the challenges and opportunities they present. This highly interactive workshop will include American Dental Education Association Page 7 of 10
8 small group activities and demonstration of how various media can be integrated into the classroom or online modules to enhance learning. 1. Topics will include: Table 1: Diversity and Inclusion Strategies and Initiatives Table 2: Student Conduct and Peer-Review Process Table 3: Student Financial Literacy and Budgeting Table 4: Social Media in Recruitment and Retention Table 5: Professional Wellness and Work/Life Balance Each round will last 20 minutes and participants will rotate through two different tables during this session. All five topics will be offered during each 20-minute session, and a facilitator will keep notes to aggregate and share discussion points raised by each of the two groups that join that table. At the conclusion, participants will share with the larger group an overview of each table s topic and highlight key takeaways.
