If you are not an SAA member you should become one today and gain access to all of our events, programs and discounts including $100 off any Kaplan test preparation course! In case you are not already aware, the Student Alumni Association is a student organization meant to offer students the opportunity to connect with alumni, gain leadership skills and develop career contacts that will make us successful after college. I have seen first-hand how important a strong network is to the job-search, especially in this economy. This is the ideal time for you to take advantage of the connections you will make as an SAA member! After graduation you can continue to take advantage of the UCR alumni network by joining the Alumni Association. Did you know that UCR has over 80,000 alumni! Becoming a member of the Alumni Association after graduation will give you access to this extensive alumni network through an online community and regional alumni events, as well as discounts on many services that we all use! 2 On February 17th, 2010, Kenneth Noller '75 ('76 T.C., '84 M.A.) and his wife, Nancy Noller, graciously hosted a Dinner with Alumni for the SAA members at their home in Riverside. Mr. Noller is currently a teacher at Matthew Gage Middle School and Nancy is an elementary school teacher. He kindly invited his fellow colleagues, Kelly Mcallister '91 and Katie Leshinsky to share their experience as teachers. The teachers discussed finding success in the field of education and the satisfaction they obtain from teaching. One of the students who attended the dinner said, I always wanted to be a teacher ever since I was little. However, throughout college, I was somehow discouraged from this goal. During the dinner, the teachers helped me remember why I always wanted be a teacher. The dinner was a rewarding and inspirational opportunity for the students. Our next dinner will be on April 13 at the home of Jeff Krynski '81 in Manhattan Beach (carpools will be provided.) Mr. Krynski is a Consultant and Director with TPI, a leading sourcing advisory firm working primarily with Fortune 200 companies. Dinner with Alumni

3 LAW CAREER CONFERENCE On Saturday, February 27, SAA held its 11th annual, award-winning, Law Career Conference. With a record 93 students signed up the conference was bigger and better than ever. The conference included a morning admissions seminar by alumnus and recent law school graduate Scott Talkov, panels on a variety of topics and chaired by 12 UCR graduates who are now successful lawyers and judges, and a networking lunch. The panel sessions included topics such as Judgeship, Criminal Justice, Law and Social Change, Civil Litigation, Non-Profit, and Law in Government. During lunch, panelist name cards placed at each table allowed students to choose which alumni they wished to sit with, allowing attendees to, as one student put it, talk to actual lawyers about what they do. The keynote speaker, Judge Roger Luebs 74 is a Superior Court Judge. He gave students valuable advice about approaching law school and how to cope with the stresses of such a demanding program and career choice. He also provided a list of recommended reading, which many students thought was extremely helpful. A Kaplan test preparation panel allowed attendees to understand the goals they should set during their preparation for taking the challenging LSAT. In sum, the overall diversity of the panelists and the fields that they were in offered students true inspiration and reaffirmed their pursuit of a career in law. Students interested in careers in the field of business should take advantage of valuable opportunities like this during the Business Career Conference, scheduled for Saturday, May 15, Keep an eye out for s and fliers with more detailed information coming soon!

4 GENERAL MEETINGS The Student Alumni Association prepares students for life after graduation by bringing a variety of alumni back to speak with SAA members. Brian Hawley 89 ( 92 M.S.), helped SAA members understand the trials and dedication it takes to open one s own business with his computer science background. The knowledge and feedback that Mr. Hawley shared at the meeting was both inspirational and helpful to students of all majors. Students interested in art history or in becoming curators or museum personnel benefitted from meeting Noelle Valentino, a graduate student and a Getty Museum employee. She spoke in detail about internships and opportunities the Getty Museum provides for students. If you are interested in attending an SAA meeting, spring meetings will begin April 6, 2010 at 7pm in HUB 268 with our guest speaker, Scott Silverman 01 ( 04 M.S.). Also, we will be holding our annual Speed Networking event on April 22 at 7 pm in the Barn. Hone your networking skills with alumni from all fields! STUDENT ALUMNI MENTORSHIP PROGRAM Looking for your track to success but not sure which train to hop on? Come join the Student Alumni Mentorship Program and let us help you find your destination. After completing a short application we will match you with an alumnus in your field of interest. We think you will find that UCR alumni are very open to sharing their personal experiences and advice. They want to help you succeed! You can choose to communicate with your mentor through phone-calls, s, or face-to-face meetings. If you need help establishing or nurturing the connection, we will always be here to help. You can pick up an application at any of our events or at the Alumni and Visitor s Center.

5 The Midnight Premiere of Alice in Wonderland was a great success. SAA was able to work with the University Village Ultrastar Cinemas, once again, to provide our members with several perks. We offered each of our members preferred seating and a concession stand coupon. There was no need to stand in line with the rest of the Tim Burton, Johnny Depp and Lewis Carroll fans. Our members were able to skip the line and go straight into the movie theater. While waiting for the movie to start, the members answered questions from Alice in Wonderland Movie trivia. Those who answered correctly received free movie posters provided by the UV Theater. After the movie trivia the SAA Board of Directors raffled off SAA t-shirts and a Mumbles gift card for all of the members who showed up in their UCR t-shirts or blue and gold. We will be hosting another Midnight Premiere event for Iron Man 2 on April 30. Keep your eyes out for it! SAA has coordinated an event for Disney s Give A Day, Get A Day with the help of The Welsh Foundation and The City of Riverside. 30 SAA members will be planting trees and painting over graffiti at Fairmont Park in Riverside on Saturday, March 13. After the completion of this event, SAA members will receive a complimentary ticket to one of the many Disney Parks! It is important to take an active role in your community. Riverside is R Side!
