2 School of of Science The School of Science is a multidisciplinary institution comprising of five departments: Department of Mathematics Department of Physics Department of Chemistry and Food Chemistry Department of Psychology Department of Biology The School of Science is committed to the Humboldt s Principle of unity in teaching and research. Students and staff benefit above all from the excellent research environment in Dresden. Department of Mathematics Mathematics is the language of science and technology. The research interests at the Mathematics Department range from optimisation, dynamical systems and partial differential equations to mathematical modelling and the numerical treatment of these subjects. Stochastic processes, probabilistic methods in insurance & finance and the close interplay of geometry and algebra are further focus areas. Currently there are 750 graduate and undergraduate students studying mathematics as a major; minors are offered for engineering, the sciences and social sciences. All of our degrees BSc in Mathematics, MSc in Mathematics, MSc in Mathematics for industry, MSc in Mathematics for business & economy, Mathematics for school teachers are research-informed and offer an optimal start into a career in industry or academia.

3 Department of Physics According to the CHE research ranking, the Department of Physics belongs to the top 10 physics research departments in Germany. The department s five institutes investigate, both theoretically and experimentally, a broad spectrum of current issues in physics, including fundamental properties of solids and their application, elementary particles, and complex quantum systems. The department s close links with other research institutions in the area, such as Fraunhofer, Helmholtz, Leibniz and Max Planck, and networking with the industrial sector make it a unique location for studying or doing research in physics. The discipline provides a broad education on physics at the highest level with a strong research orientation and an international focus. Department of Chemistry and Food Chemistry In its teaching and research activities, the Department of Chemistry and Food Chemistry is closely related to other research institutions in the Dresden region. The main fields dealt with in the department are material science (e.g. porous materials, nanotechnology) and biology-oriented chemistry. The department is involved in the Cluster of Excellence, Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden (cfaed). Research in the area of food chemistry focuses on the effect and evaluation of food ingredients. In addition to bachelor s, master s, diploma, and teacher training programmes provided at the department, an integrated Franco-German programme Chemistry is offered. All students are involved in actual research as early as possible. Department of Psychology The Department of Psychology has been repeatedly ranked as one of the leading psychology departments in Germany. It focuses on three research areas: cognitive-affective neuroscience, clinical psychology and psychotherapy, and human performance in socio-technical systems. The Department has an excellent research infrastructure, including its own Neuroimaging Centre, and houses top-class interdisciplinary research programmes such as the DFG Collaborative Research Centre Volition and Cognitive Control (SFB 940) and large-scale projects on the etiology and neurocognitive mechanisms of mental disorders. In addition to broad academic programmes at the bachelor s and master s level, it offers a postgraduate Behavioral Psychotherapy programme and an Integrated Graduate School within the SFB 940 providing early career support for PhD students.

4 Department of Biology Since its re-establishment as a dynamic structural unit, the Department of Biology has become anew. With its wide range of subjects it offers modern professional training in applied and molecular biology. The excellent infrastructure offers students the best conditions in bachelor s and master s programmes with a highly practical content. Dresden has developed into a leading location for biotechnology, particularly thanks to its manifold links to many other universities and institutions, such as the Biotechnology Center, the Center for Regenerative Therapies, the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics, the Center for Innovation Competence, or the European Centre for Emerging Materials and Processes Dresden.

6 School of Science International Office The International Office coordinates all international activities of the School of Science in the fields of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The office is a contact point for guests from all over the world and supports scientists at the School of Science in their collaborations abroad. The office is also responsible for the planning and implementation of the internationalisation strategy.
