1 Acute and chronic disabilities for comprehensive rehabilitation Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine/Rehabilitatio n Institute of Chicago Summer Extern Experience This is an eight-week Summer Externship program, sponsored by the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of Northwestern University Medical School. The externship program is held at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC), located in downtown Chicago at the McGaw Medical Center. This program offers a unique and early clinical exposure related to the care of persons with acute and chronic disabilities for comprehensive rehabilitation. Primarily, students will assist in the clinical management of patients admitted to RIC. In addition, students will participate in a research project in a rehabilitation related field. 2 Alcohol and drug abuse Univ. of Utah School of Alcoholism and other drug Dependency The School, which is recognized internationally, has continually expanded its scope to keep pace with increased awareness of the health and social problems of alcoholism and other drug dependencies. Its aim is to increase medical student knowledge about the pathogenesis and treatment of common allergic and immunologic disease, and increase awareness of training programs in allergy and immunology. This program, the Medical Student Training in Aging Research program (MSTAR), is an outgrowth of a longstanding national program that has provided summer research and clinical opportunities for many Ohio State students. 3 Asthma Edgar Erb Asthma Scholarship Program for Med 1 Students The Edgar M. Erb Memorial Fund was established by his sister Wenonah C. Erb in The intent of the gift is to sponsor medical students who wish to participate in the field of research for the treatment of asthma until the disease has been conquered by medical science. The Edgar Erb Asthma Scholarship Program will be awarded to Med 1 students to support asthma-related research at The Ohio State University. A total of 2 awards will be given each year. Students can apply for either of 2 research tracks within the program: clinical trials or basic science. Awards will be issued in the amounts of $4,000 given as a stipend for work completed in the summer quarter and an additional $12,750 which will be directed toward tuition costs and will be evenly distributed over fall, winter, and spring quarters of Med 2. Students will be required to work during normal hours of operation of the Clinical Trials Office during the summer and at least 15 hours/week during Med 2 year.. 4 Biomedical Informatics Harvard Biomedical Informatics Research Training Program The Informatics Research Training program is a coordinated approach to training in biomedical informatics. The training program is composed of academic training, mentored research training and experience, and other career-enhancing activities. Further, and importantly, trainees learn by doing their own independent research. Immediately upon entering the program, trainees are placed, according to their expressed interests, in one of our research laboratories. After a brief orientation period during which trainees are introduced to the variety of research projects and mentors in their laboratories, they develop their own research plans. Each postdoctoral fellow participates in the two-year Harvard Medical School Master of Medical Sciences in Biomedical Informatics. 10 End of life (EOL) care American Medical Student Association Foundation The American Medical Student Association (AMSA) Foundation offers the AMSA Vitas End-of-Life Education Fellowship program as a sixweek intensive summer experience designed to introduce medical students to end of life (EOL) care issues in a way which cannot be found on the medical school campus. Vitas Innovative Hospice Care will coordinate a program packed with rigorous didactic sessions and a variety of field placements. Students will have the opportunity to learn from interdisciplinary hospice team members which may consist of doctors, nurses, social workers, chaplains, bereavement counselors, and volunteers. As with all clinical settings, the experiences will vary from day to day, and will include both in-patient and home visits, the routine and the unexpected. 11 Epidemiology CDC Experience Applied Epidemiology Fellowship The CDC Experience Applied Epidemiology Fellowship is a one-year fellowship tailored for rising 3rd- and 4th-year medical students, designed to increase the pool of physicians with a population health perspective. Eight competitively selected fellows spend months at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offices in Atlanta, GA, where they carry out epidemiologic analyses in various areas of public health. The Fellowships provide journalism, law, medical, and seminary students a structured program of study that initially focuses on the role of their chosen professions in Nazi Germany and the Holocaust and uses that historic focus as a framework for the consideration of contemporary ethical issues.
