Cravens Fellowships are being offered again this year by the National Science Foundation for advanced study in the basic and applied sciences, the social sciences, and in the history and philosophy of science. Anderson (Elementary Education) served as consultant for the South West Developmental Laboratories in Fort Worth, Texas, on October 10-12, and she attended the National Council on Family Relations in New Orleans, Louisiana, on October where the theme was "Man and His World." On October 21-22, Dr. Anderson directed workshops for the Day Care Center Staff at Little Rock Presbyterian Church. Dr. Arvin Blome (Director, Educational Research) and Dr. Tate C. Page (Dean, College of Education) attended the fall conference of CEMREL on the George Peabody College campus in Nashville on October The conference theme was ItSupply and Demand for Educational Personnel. \I Nine members of Western's Physics Department attended a meeting o f the Southeastern Section of the American Physical Society at the University o f Georgia in Athens on October 8-H. Technical papers were presented as follows: Dr. W. G. Buckman on "Photo-Stimulated Thermoluminescence of Gamma Irradiated Lithium F luoride"; Mr. R. E. Dawson on lithe Operation of an Experiment Library for Elementary Physics"; Dr. R. J. Komp on "Electron Affinity of Amorphous Sulfur"; and Dr. N. F. Six and Mr. Max Robinson on 1t550 - Mile Baseline Interferomety of Millisecond Jovian Pulses. II Dr. Errunett D. Burkeen(Director, Counselor Education) was on the progr am, and the following members of the Counselor Education staff attended the Annual Conference of the Southern As sociation for Counselor Education and Supervision in Lexington on October 13-14: Dr. DeWayne Mitchell, Dr. Vernon Lee Sheeley, Dr. Emmett D. Burkeen, and Mr. James McKee. They also attended the Fourth District Personnel and Guidance Association meeting in Elizabethtown on October 11. Dr. Norman A. Deeb (Director, Human Relations Center for Education) attended the meeting of Center Directors held in Washington, D. C., on October Mrs. Lucy Erwin (Head, Department of Nursing) attended the annual meeting of the Assembly of Constituent Leagues for Nursing at the National League for Nursing Headquarters in New York City on September Mrs. Erwin is President of the Kentucky L eague for Nursing. On October 2 she attended a m,eeting of the State Health Planning Council in Frankfort. Me sdames Janice Gibson, Berniece Zeidler, Bettye Jones, and Sharon Henderson (Nursing) attended the annual meeting of the Student Nurses Association of Kentucky (SNAK) in Gilbertsville on October 10. Mesdames Gibson and Jones serve as co- advisors to the Seventh District of SNAK. Mrs. Lucy Erwin (Head, Department of Nursing) was a panelist on the program on October 11 and discussed "Decision for the Future: Economic Security. 11

Hatcher (Dean, Potter College of Liberal Arts) gave a paper entitled "Jorge Issacs: The Man and His Works" at the Mountain Interstate Foreign Language Conference at Danville, Kentucky, on October Also attending the Conference from the Department of Foreign Languages were Dr. Carol P. Brown, Mr. Joseph Velez, Mr. Thurston Taylor, and Mrs. Clarice Scarborough. Mr. Harold R. Hepler (Sociology and Anthropology) attended lectures during August at the Institute of Education, University of London; the Danmarks Laererforening, Copenhagen; the Inter Nationes, Bad Godesberg, Germany; l'institut de Science de I'Education, Geneva; and the Institut Pedagogique National, Paris, in conjunction with a course in comparative education sponsored by Oklahoma State University. Mr. Bobby P. Holman and Miss Caroline Seward (Training School) attended the Fall Conference of the Kentucky Council of Teachers of Mathematics at Elizabethtown High School on September 21. Dr. M. G. Karsner (Physical Education, Health, and Recreation) was co- director and taught in the Kentucky Dance Institute for folk dance leaders at Morehead State University, on August Regent Douglas Keen and Dr. Kelly Thompson (President) will attend the annual meeting of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities in Washington, D. Koch (Home Economics) attended the Joint Conferences of Colleges and University Faculty and the Internship Directors and Faculty on October and the annual meeting of The American Dietetic Association on October 14-18, in San Francisco, California. Dr. Robert Mounce (Philosophy and Religion) attended the annual meeting of the American Academy of Religion in Dallas, Texas, on October Mr. Walter B. Nalbach (Head, Industrial Education) participated in the In- Se rvice Program of the Bowling Green City School System on August 28. Mr. Walter B. Park (Coordinator of Instruction, Training School) was a team consultant at the Local Representative Assembly Workshop for classroom teachers on Friday, October 18, for Second District Classroom Teachers luncheon at Senior High, Owensboro, and for an evening workshop at McNeill School, Bowling Green, on the saine date. Mrs. Mania Ritter (Foreign Languages) attended the annual Midwest Modern Language Association on October 17-18, at Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Hollie W. Sharpe, Dr. Peggy D. Keck, and Mr. Thomas H. Inman (Office Administration) attended the Fourth District Business Educ ation meeting in Louisville on Friday, October 25. Drs. John Stahl and Jerald Richards (Philosophy and Religion) attended the annual meeting of the Philosophy of Science Association in Pittsburgh, on October Dr. Earl Wassom (Library Science) conducted an In- Service Program for Reading Teachers in Franklin, Kentucky, on October 17. SPEECHES AND APPEARANCES Dr. Kelly Thompson (President) addressed the annual meeting of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI in Boston, Massachusetts, on October 23. The President's subject was "The Youth of America Search for Exemplary Leadership. 1\ Dr. Mable B. Englebright (Elementary Education) spoke to the elementary faculty at Morgantown on October 2 on "Motivation for Readingi" on October 4, on IIReading Problems" at the luncheon meeting of the Elementary Principals Association; on October 10, to the Louisville Archdiocesan Teachers Meeting at Convention Center in Louisville on IIPsychological Principles Applied to the Teaching of Reading;" at an in-service m eeting of the eleme ntary teachers at Central City on October 11 on "Phonics;1I and on Octobe r 15 to the special r eading teachers at Franklin-Simpson, In Franklin, on "Diagnosis and Treatment of Reading Problems. II Mr. Jack Frost (Training School) presented a paper entitled "Some Practical Frontiers in Elementary School Guidance" at the Michigan State Third Annual Elementary School Guidance Conference at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan, on October 19.

Role in Indian Independence!! at the Southeastern Regional meeting of the Association for Asian Studies in St. Petersburg, Florida, on January 24-25, Dr. J. E. Jones (Sociology and Anthropology) was the keynote speaker at the luncheon for Classroom Teachers at the Third District Education Association on Western's campus on October 4. Dr. Bragi Josephson (Sociology and Anthropology) spoke on "Our Culture and Others" at the De lta Kappa Garnrna meeting in Bowling Green on October 19. Dr. William J. Nolan (Foreign Languages) addressed the Foreign Language section of the Third District Education Association on Friday J October 4, on "Castellazinacion or Teaching Spanish to the Guatemalans. " Mrs. Juanita K. Park (Coordinator of Instruction, Training School) addressed the Paducah Classroom Teachers Association on Thursday, October 24, concerning the "Professional Practice Commission. II Mrs. Juanita K. Park (Coordinator of Instruction, Training School) addressed the Second District Education Association Department of Classroom Teachers at Murray State University, Murray, Kentucky, on Friday, October 11. Her topic was "Communication - Key to Unity. II Mrs. Betty Pease (Music) will perform a solo concert as a feature of the m.eeting of The Kentucky Association of String Teachers at Morehead State University on Monday, November 11. Anne Hale (Music) will accompany. The same afternoon Mrs. Pease, Dr. Edward Pease, and Mr. Edward Largent (Music) will present the first performance of Mr. Largent's "Trio for Violin, Horn and Piano" during the composition symposium of the Kentucky Music Teachers Association at Morehead. Dr. Edward Pease (Music) will perform the "Concerto No. 1 for Horn" with the University Symphony Orchestra on Sunday, November 17. Mr. Walter D. (Jody) Richards (English) spoke to the Clinton County teachers on Monday, August 26. Dr. William H. Solley (Head, Department of Physical Education, Health, and Recreation) was Master of Ceremonies at the College of Educa tion Fall Banquet, on Septemher 27. Dr. William H. Solley (Head, Departm.ent of Physical Education, Health, and Recreation) appeared on a panel for health and physical education teachers to discuss "Marking and Grading in Physical Education. 11 The panel was presented by Fourth District Fdocation Association in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, on Octoher 11.

PUBLICATIONS Dr. Lowell H. Harrison (History) published "Teaching Research Methods in History" in the Peabody Journal of Education in May, 1968, and "Some Thomas Jefferson- John Breckinridge Correspondence" in the Filson Club Histor y Quarterly in July, Dr. Harrison has also published "The Cattle Sheep Wars" in Alnerican History Illustrated, October, In April, Dr. J. E. Jones (Sociology and Anthropology) published "A Study Guide for the Development of the History of Social Thought" which is the first of a series of departmental study guides for the Department of Sociol ogy and Anthropology at Western. Dr. William B. Koch (Physical Education, Health, and Recreation) published "An Adaptation of the'core Concept' to the Graduate Program in Physical Education" in the May, 1968, issue of the Kentu cky Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation Journal. Dr. William H. Koon (English) published an article in the summer, 1968, issue of Tennes see Folklore. Dr. William H. Koon (English) was a cons ultant for a Rand McNally publication, Guide to Campgrounds, 1969, during the SUITlmer months. Dr. George S. Masannat (Government) reviewed National Development and Local Reform: Political Participation in Morocco, Tunisia and Pakistan by Douglas E. Ashford in the July, 1968, issue of The Journal ~Develo p ing Areas. Ideas of History in two volumes by Dr. Ronald H. Nash (Head, P h ilosophy and Religion) will be published early in 1969 by E. P. Dutton and Company. Dr. Edward J. Pease (Music) has had an article on the teaching of music appreciation accepted for publication in forthcoining issue of The School Musician. Dr. C. Ronald Seeger (Geography and Geology) published "Origin of the Jeptha Knob Structure, Kentucky" in the October is sue of Arnerican Journal of Science.

HONORS, OFFICES, AND APPOINTMENTS Mr. Marvin Bowman (English) has b een appointed to Chair the color session at the annual convention of the National Association of Educational Broadcasters, November 20-22, in Washington, D. C. In this position, he will be responsible for coordination and planning and will also act as moderator. Purpose of the two-hour sea sion is to inform e ducational broadcasters of the growth, costs, problem.s, and advantages of color- casting. Mrs. Lucy Erwin (Head, Department of Nursing) is representative for the Kentucky League for Nursing on the Health Careers Council, sponsored by the Kentucky Hospital Research and Education Foundation, Inc., under the auspices of the Kentucky Hospital Association. She attended the first meeting of the Council on October 15. Mr. Jack Frost (Training School) has been appointed to a three-year term on the Editorial Board of the Elementary Guidance and Counseling Journal. Dr. Charles T. Hays (Accounting) received the Ph. D. degree in accountancy from the University of Mis souri in August. M r. Bobby P. Holman (Training School) and Dr. Joe K. Smith (Mathematics) were elected President and Vice President, respective ly, of the Third District Mathematics T e achers Association during the annual meeting of Third District Education Association at Western Kentucky University on October 4. Dr. A. Guy Hope (Government) was invited by American Foreign Service Association to participate in discussions concerning r eorganization of United States Government foreign policy in the D epartment of State on November Participants include active and retired diplomatic and other foreign affairs officials, academicians with special inte rest and competence in foreign affairs, and distinguished American public figures with foreign policy interests. Mesdam.es Romanza Johnson, Lucile Stiles, and Helen Kelley (Horne Economics) were judges for the Nutrition Fair at Elkton, Kentucky, on October 11. The purpose of the fair is to prornote interest in better nutrition and increase participation in the school lunch program. Dr. J. E. Jones (Sociology and Anthropology) was r ecently sworn in on the Bowling Green Hum.an Relations Commission. Dr. John W. Jones (Physical Education, Health, and Recreation) was nominated President-El ect for the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Section of Third District Education Association at the Third District meeting in Diddle Arena on October 4.

10 -9- Nutrition majors in Mrs. Helen Kelley's (Home Economics) classes have been asked to assist in the National Nutrition Survey on October The survey is the first to determine the incidence and location of serious hunger, malnutrition, and related health problems in the United States, a responsibility which has been given to the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare by the Congres s of the United States. Dr. Joy Kirchner (Physical Education, Health, and Recreation) was re - appointed to the Education Committee, Warren County Chapter,A. C. S.,in Sept. and she has been appointed to the Leadership Development Team on Smoking and Health Education sponsored by the American Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation, effective September, Dr. William B. Koch (Physical Education, Health, and Recreation) was appointed Editor of the Research Section of the Kentucky As sociation for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Journal for Mrs. Brenda S. Martin (Training School and Department of English) is President-Elect of Third District Council Teachers of English. Mis s Marian Meyer (Nursing) has been selected by the National League for Nursing-American Nursing Association Testing Services to serve as an item writer for the State Board Test Pool Examinations. Miss Meyer will be in New York City during the week of October 28 to assist in writing items for the examination dealing with Surgical Nursing. Miss Lois Jane Roper (Mathematics) represented Northwest Missouri State College at the inauguration of Dr. Harry M. Sparks as the fifth President of Murray State University on October 21. Dr. John A. Scarborough (Director, Summer School) was elected First Vice President, and Dr. Joy Kirchner(Physical Education, Health, and Recreation) was elected Third Vice President of the Training School P. T. A. for Mrs. Sara Taylor (Elementary Education) received the Specialist of Education Degree from George Peabody College for Teachers in August. At the fall meeting of the Kentucky Council of Teacher s of English, Dr. Willson E. Wood (Head,English Department) was elected Chairman of the College Section for a one- year term. MlSCELLANEOUS Dr. Kelly Thompson (President) visited Mr. Ronald C. Bauer, President of World University in San Juan, Puerto Rico, while on a vacation-business trip in Puerto Rico from September 24 to October 8. He also visited other institutions of higher education in Puerto Rico.

Page (Dean, College of Education) welcomed the member s of the Kentucky Department of Elementary School Principals to the campus. On October 24, he welcomed the counselors attending the fall conference of the Talent Identification and Utilization Project. Mrs. Janet Schwarzkopf (English) attended summer school at George Peabody College for Teachers where she participated in a workshop in Teaching the Humanities. The following additional faculty members have received funds for faculty research through the F.culty Research Committee: Dr. Harry S. Tausch for "Individual Differ ences in the Visual Perceptual Trace, II and Dr. William G. Lloyd for "Equilibria between Acetals and Vinyl Ethers. II.
