1 MOBERLY AREA COMMUNITY COLLEGE DIVISION CHAIR MEETING September 14, 2016 The Moberly Area Community College Division Chair meeting was held Wednesday, September 14, 2016, at 3:30 p.m. in the Blue Room. The meeting was called to order by Dr. Jackie Fischer. Financial aid for regular 16-week students will be posted soon. Faculty members are reminded to double check rosters, follow the College s drop policy, and report students to Retention Manager as needed.

2 Director of Institutional Services/Bookstore Manager Virginia Gebhardt 1. Virginia will begin leave on Tuesday, September 20, and she expects to return by approximately late November. Marsha Shuler will be working with Katelyn Brandkamp and Suzi McGarvey for the spring textbook requisitions. Marsha is also the contact for facilities requests for cafeteria functions. Assistant Director of Plant Operations Darrin Fox 1. The new counseling center at the Columbia campus has been completed and will open soon. a. Dr. Jackie Fischer mentioned that Central Methodist University students from the masters in counseling program will be on site to offer counseling to MACC students. 2. Work has been completed or is nearing completion in the following areas: a. The replacement of the arched windows and the HVAC system in Komar Hall b. The renovation of the Board Conference Room in Komar Hall c. Plumbing upgrades in the Main Building d. The replacement of the concrete sidewalk outside the Main Building 3. A new security system has been installed on the main campus. It is the same system already installed at Columbia, and has been working well. New systems are planned for Mexico and Kirksville. Director of Security Lori Perry 1. Training with the Department of Public Safety will be offered on the Moberly campus. The format will be in-seat or virtual and is expected to take place in December. 2. A security brief was sent out to the College about emergencies. Lori reminded everyone to read briefs and to always call 911 in the case of a medical emergency. 3. The hiring process of full-time security is currently underway at Columbia and Mexico. Interviews for Hannibal and Kirksville will begin soon. 4. Active shooter drills have taken place at the Columbia, Mexico and Kirksville campuses with the assistance of local police departments. The training was beneficial. Active shooter drills are being planned in the near future for Hannibal, and Moberly. Dean of Student Affairs & Enrollment Management Michele McCall 1. Enrollment has been reported as flat and is expected to look up as dual credit enrollment progresses. a. Due to the use of Retention Manager, more students were dropped during the refund period than in previous semesters; many students were able to avoid owing a large balance for the fall semester. This will help with retention in the long term because students will not have a balance to pay before returning to classes. Many students were assisted and able to continue on with classes. The most frequent concerns were with technology access and understanding course resources. b. Dual credit enrollment is currently taking place. MACC is located in 42 area high schools as well as providing online dual credit class offerings. Dual credit online classes have grown by 150% since last fall. Regular dual credit is expected to be up too.

3 2. Senate Bill 638 will allow private high schools to join the A+ program. We will be meeting with area private schools to encourage them to apply for the program. 3. The chat feature for the website should be ready soon. An advisor will be available to chat live with students or anyone with questions when available. 4. Picnics at all MACC locations will be held next week (9/19-9/23). The Moberly campus picnic will be held in the Activity Center parking lot, and Columbia s picnic will be at the far end of the parking lot. The online campus will have activities during the last week of September. 5. Plans are being made to provide transportation from other campuses to the November play, A Wrinkle in Time and the December Choir performance. There are also plans to provide transportation for selected basketball games as well as live streaming some games to other campuses. 6. Michele McCall, Dr. Jackie Fischer, and Shannon Crist will attend the NACEP Conference in October where they will accept MACC s accreditation award. 7. Staff professional development days are planned for two Fridays in October. Dates will be announced soon. 8. The Columbia campus has recently hired 4 advisors to replace staff that have left: a. Saira Ahmed International Academic Advisor b. Iain Gould International Academic Advisor c. Sherry McDonald Advisor d. Amanda Leon Dual Credit Specialist & Academic Advisor Updates from Division Chairs: Humanities/Fine Arts Division Chair Sherry Todd 1. Sherry encouraged everyone to see the upcoming play, A Wrinkle in Time, on the Moberly campus. Mathematics/Science Division Chair Barbie Underwood 1. Donna Kessler, Sara Sapp, and Sheila Bradley will be attending the state meeting in October which will include discussions about Math Pathways. 2. A concern has been expressed about the large number of students and their close proximity to each other during certain science lab classes. A suggestion was made to limit the number in classes, such as microbiology, from 28 students to 22 students. a. Dr. Jackie Fischer will follow up on this issue. 3. A difficult start has been reported concerning the students ability to access the ebooks, Issues included new editions not being available right away and accessibility over multiple devices. Some issues have gotten better, but there are still some being reported. 4. The student mentoring program is set to begin on the Columbia campus. Third and fourth semester students, identified by t-shirts, will connect with new students to provide assistance and encouragement. Mentor students will host a table at the Columbia campus fall picnic, have a movie night on September 28, and plan to attend the fall play. Allied Health Division Chair Candice Walker 1. The Allied Health Division is planning to meet for the first time next week (9/19-9/23).

4 2. Three new Allied Health instructors/coordinators have been hired. a. Ellen Kliethermes Practical Nursing Coordinator, Mexico b. Alese Furnald Medical Laboratory Technician Program Coordinator, Mexico c. Stephanie Julian Part-time Clinical Instructor, Mexico. 3. The College & Career Fair will combine with the Health Fair this year. The event will be held in the Activity Center on the Moberly campus on October 19, Participants include colleges, employers, health vendors, and nursing students. The refreshment stand will also be open. Computer and Industrial Technology Division Chair Greg Pauley 1. No report at this time. 2. Greg and Joyce Pauley will host a Cultural Studies in Theater trip to London in May, The trip will last nine days. The cost is $3,575 if students sign up before September 30, 2016; the cost will be raised to $3,775 after that date. New Business: Dean of Career and Technical Education Dean Fey 1. Career & Technical Education has recently hired five new people: a. Sonda Stuart Director of CTE Data & Student Success b. David Steffes Small Business & Technology Development Center Counselor c. Ellen Kliethermes Practical Nursing Coordinator, Mexico d. Alese Furnald Medical Laboratory Technician Program Coordinator, Mexico e. Russell Tarr Director of Law Enforcement Training Center 2. There have also been three position moves concerning CTE staff and faculty: a. Susan Burden has moved to the position of Instructional Technology Director. b. Stephanie Hicks has moved to positon of Continuing Education Specialist with oversight of the CNA and CMT programs. c. Susan Gale, Assistant Professor of Practical Nursing, has moved from the Mexico campus to the Moberly campus to teach the maternal child health care clinicals. 3. Due to Ben Leach s retirement, Eric Dollich, a graduate of the graphic arts program and former work study, is teaching graphic arts classes to assist current students finish the program. 4. The CTE department is currently scheduling advisory committee meetings. Dean of Academic Affairs Dr. Jackie Fischer 1. Two full-time faculty members have been hired: a. Dr. Magi Smith Language and Literature Instructor, Moberly/Columbia b. Dr. Natalie Downer Biology Instructor, Columbia with teaching duties on the Moberly campus for the fall 2016 semester only. 2. The Missouri Math Pathways taskforce is meeting to discuss the revision of math curriculum requirements for college majors to make paths more appropriate for each majors. 3. The Academic Affairs office will soon begin distributing the Noel-Levitz student satisfaction surveys. Classes will be picked randomly and will include both CTE and AA classes.

5 4. Program Reviews will be presented to the Board over the next few weeks starting Monday, September 19, with the Distance Learning Program Review. 5. Dr. Fischer mentioned the following fall events: a. Faculty Professional Development Day October 28, 2016 b. Fall Production A Wrinkle in Time November 3-5, 2016 c. MACC Singers Concert December 9, 2016 d. Fall Art Gallery Show 50 by Murphy: A Retrospective of Illustration & Fine Art The meeting was adjourned.
