Welcome! II. New Members: Amy Zeh Lee Thomas and Molly McIntire for Education changes concerning Service Learning hours. III. International Service Learning in Spain Presentation a. Sarah Melanson, Professor of EAP i. 4 students to Spain; public schools during Summer A (four weeks) ii. Planning started in iii. Preparation in order to follow steps and challenges. Brought administrators on board. Worked with Study Abroad office. Decided Models for Study Abroad. iv. *Internship vs Service Learning because of hours per credit & pre-requisites. v. Utilized local connections based on plan within Valencia College in order to make this program possible. Home states for the 4 students set up through local connections. vi. Recruitment and applications within education courses and SAGE fairs. vii. Student interviews took place. Students desire to complete the program together for 4 weeks. native speakers of English, passionate working with children, creative abilities, flexible and Spanish was not required. viii. Professors responsibilities while in Santander, Spain included preorientations, small assignments, and follow ups with students. 1. Questions a. Amy Zeh: Does Valencia have a Budget for scholarships? i. Scholarships were awarded through Student development and foundation funds. b. Professor Lott: What was the Cost of trip? i. Only flights (housing, food was offered) c. Qadri: Program was successful; Would the school take more students in the near future? Expand?

2 IV. i. Yes, although they prefer 1 or 2 students per school. Would need to work on getting more schools through the area on board in order to send more students. ix. A lot of work from Faculty member although Melanson used 2940 curriculum Melanson is the first faculty member to do Service Learning abroad. b. Student Video Christine Ramirez explaining and reflecting on experience YouTube link provided on ASC Gaming & Technology Project Presentation a. Tara Rains, Manager of the Academic Success Center at East Campus b. Nicole Merris, Instructional Lab Supervisor at East Campus i. Collaborative Alliance: engaged student is two specific projects 1. Gaming (Nicole Merris) a. Challenges: Natural student engagement. Students are coming voluntarily and product needs to call their attention. b. Gaming aspect of learning i. Gaming culture (students are coming from) ii. 82% students regularly play video games iii. 70% faculty using gaming connected with their students iv. Increase on standardized testing by using gaming 1. SL students design computer based learning environment for Math using math games and study break 2. Technology (Tara Rains) a. Spring 2016 Brainstorm to figure out goals i. Current tech to expand use ii. Increase access to learning using technology 1. Develop and launch virtual Library across discipline with short videos access 24/7 2. Screen monitors to help abstract concept made concrete 3. Living streaming workshops in the Science area. ii. Creative project: Natural curiosity in students while working on both projects together for not only a grade but knowledge sake. 1. Type of culture that it creates: made area blossom with increase production, unity, and skills to workplace. 2. All voices are valued through process that creates progress and personal and academic development.

3 3. SL students felt part of community and cared for that would help retention and successful completion. iii. Feedback for Program 1. Expand on mentoring opportunity 2. Expanded to more students through multiple programs through the college 3. Students Saw SL as a Pre-internship and gave theme experience and confidence on future plans iv. What s new? 1. Intentional Mentoring: students picked up team members as mentors to enrich experience 2. Interview Skills: Set up mock interview the 1 st meeting while giving the students feedback while turning in into a conversation. 3. LSAMP Involvement: [SLSAMP=STEM experience; interested science, tech, math while exploring work ideas.] Spring 2017 working towards their LSAMP working along SL students. 4. Spring 2017: Community exposure forming partnership Purple rock scissors for entrepreneurship connections. c. Questions: i. Lott: Tour of the Center for student awareness of the center and projects? 1. Tour or scavenger hunt is available at Professor s preference while working with Tara Rains. ii. How student get into the program? How to interview students? 1. In-house community partner 2. NSE honors course ASC needed student feedback 3. Expanding class promotions within the next two weeks for this SL to have ASC as community partner iii. Amy Zeh- it s amazing to give students different window venues in order to put together different concepts and experience to have tools for the future employer. V. Fall 2016 Enrollment a. SLS 2940 & SLS 2940H: 27 b. Integrated: 532 c. Total Student Enrollment: 559 d. Total Service Learning Hours College-wide: 7440 i. Reilly: Co-Curricular directions in order to receive distinctions ii. Brighton: Used to have different workshops Now: Initiatives presents together to students in order to share all most Valencia Initiatives. iii. Qadri: Concepts need to be experienced to be understood: Global Distinction and Service Leaning to present students. iv. Brighton: Faculty could require VGD, SL, Honors requirements.

Integrated: 6 Faculty Development a. Service Learning Across the Curriculum, LCTS3212 (20pd) i. Fall: 10/14-11/11 3 participants b. Introduction to Service Learning, LCTS7220 (2pd) i. Summer: 7/22 9 participants 1. New session coming up in December AmeriCorps VISTA Position a. Overview: AmeriCorps VISTA members are passionate and committed to their mission to bring individuals and communities out of poverty. Members make a yearlong, full-time commitment to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or public agency. They focus their efforts to build the organizational, administrative, and financial capacity of organizations that fight illiteracy, improve health services, foster economic development, and otherwise assist low-income communities. b. Hiring timeframe: February, 2017 i. Full time employee 1-year commitment low income position ii. 2 individual turned down position 1. Amy Zeh a. Not successful: not enough projects although it was a good experience. 2. Professor Qadri a. Well trained and connected through education department and school. Engaging on a building capacity. iii. Preferably Bachelor s degree, although AA will be accepted. iv. Most applicants are not local. Interviews over the phone. v. Promote to students in Valencia, UCF, Adventist University. * c. Projects: First 30: 1 yearlong learning community that take students through their first college year, cultural immersion program: Alternative Breaks, community partnerships New On-line Submission Form for Integrated Courses a. Atlas: Going electronic no longer through paper. Through the Faculty Tab. Dean will approve electronically. Faculty will be notified when available. b. Excel Workbook: Mass enrollment for departments c. Term Deadlines: ***Review deadlines at least a week before for earlier enrollment** i. Spring, 2017: October 28 th ii. Summer, 2017: February 3 rd

5 iii. Fall, 2017: May 5 th 1. Miller: Faculty Development would need to be moved next year to work with deadlines 2. Lott: Will current Curriculum Plans for Integrated education courses to Brighton. X. Teacher Educator Preparatory Teacher Education Program (TEP) a. TEP updates from East Campus i. Orientation: 125 students 1. SL 1 hour given for attending as Orientation activities covered most on-boarding processes in order to complete Service Learning hours as: What to wear when going to schools; filling out needed paperwork hour recording form, Student Agreement Form, etc.; assistance with background checks; also students received their pins at Orientation. 2. Understand what SL is and how does it work ii. Partner schools 1. Background checks a. New high schools as partners: i. Lake Nona ii. Renascence Charter School Valencia College Ln. iii. Updated comments in Banner 1. Mass Excel Workbook could have a column for preferred Banner text iv. Independent course for TEP 1. Faculty Development: might have a new course to develop foe a different experience for education faculty meeting after Spring Break Spring 2017 b. AA Elementary Education Pre-Major COLLEGEWIDE i. College-wide infusion of Service Learning (similar to Early Childhood major) a. To align what UCF requirement with a meaningful experience 2. EDF 2005 (20 hours) 3. EDF 2085 (20 hours) 4. EEC 2001 (20 hours) a. Qadri: Has had some challenges to complete 20hr. i. Rhonda: It has not been approved yet. ii. Follow up with Lee and Molly based on discussion on the hour requirement. iii. Collegewide model will be more consistent and students would see it differently. iv. Robinson: Once Collegewide, consider placing on course description as part of this courses.

6 b. Technology with SL hours Collegewide as all schools will be virtual on i. Brighton: Discuss with Lee and Molly as SL Curriculum initiatives will support the decision the department makes. XI. Presentation: Innovation in Community: Leveraging Service Learning, Social Entrepreneurship, and Learning Communities to Empower a Wave of Change makers **Social Entrepreneurship course has gotten approval last month for GEP** i. Presenters: Robyn Brighton, Jerrid Kalakay, & Crystal Smith ii. East Campus First 30 Students c Florida Campus Compact Community Engagement Educator Award in the Florida College System Sector d. Central Florida Regional Meeting XII. Service Learning Video a. Produced by Kevin Thomas XIII. Night of Distinction a. Friday, April 28 th (6-8pm) b. Recognizing Students Graduating with Service Learning, VGD, and Honors Distinction: Students must fill out the Graduation Application in order to be consider for Recognition c. Recognizing service from TEP XIV. International Service Learning (ISL) Programs a. Peru, 2017 b. Costa Rica, 2018 i. Cost under $1,000 as of October 2016 ii. Home states for students iii.
