2 Summary of Certified Instructional Coaching Program Activities in Palm Beach County The program began with an intensive, 4-day institute for a cohort of district and area support staff on May 28-31, 2013 at Pine Jog School. The institute was then repeated on July 29-August 1, 2014 at Don Estridge High Tech Middle School in order to introduce schoolbased academic coaches and teachers to the Certified Instructional Coaching program. After the initial summer institutes, six half-day follow-up sessions were scheduled throughout the academic year. Groups were split to attend either a Tuesday or Wednesday session; these were held on September 17-18, 2013; October 15-16, 2013: November 19-20, 2013; January 14-15, 2014; February 4-5, 2014; and May 14, Training sessions were facilitated by University of Florida Lastinger-Center certified coaches and utilized an electronic platform so that participants could development an electronic portfolio to demonstrate proficiency in coaching. The portfolios consisted of video clips, data displays, written reflections, and reports on coaching conversations. Portfolios were assessed according to a coaching rubric to determine participants proficiency in holding coaching conversations, maintaining an instructional focus, and utilizing data effectively. Data from reflective surveys completed by participants at each follow-up session were analyzed to uncover training areas needing revision or barriers to implementation. Based on this feedback, the UF facilitators created action steps to address problems and revised training agendas. At the final session, which coincided with the First Annual Palm Beach County STEM Initiative Learning Showcase, 30 teachers and 19 district and area staff were awarded their Certificates. Page 2

3 Summary of Certified Instructional Coaching Program Activities in Palm Beach County The day summer institute for the program was held on August 4-7, 2014 at Palm Springs Middle School. As in year one, this institute was followed by 6 follow up sessions, held on September 16-17, 2014; October 28-29, 2014; November 18-19, 2014; January 13-14, 2015; February 3-4, 2015; and May 13, Changes to the program were implemented in the academic year, based upon feedback garnered from participants in year one of the project. Participants reported a need to focus more attention on STEM concepts, so the follow-up sessions were expanded from halfday to full-day sessions. Coaching concepts were discussed during morning sessions and the newly hired STEM-Integration Specialist (Nancy Bourne) with the district s STEM Coordinator (Bruce Wear) provided STEM-related activities in afternoon sessions. More practice on creating and analyzing data displays was incorporated into the training and more time was allotted for participants to practice coaching conversations with their peers. Significant milestones for the Certified Instructional Coaching program included: 7 co-facilitators worked with the UF facilitators to plan agendas and coordinate the summer institute and follow-up sessions. In this manner, district staff and teachers built capacity to lead coaching professional development sessions. Of the 53 original participants, 83% (n=44) remained active in the program after the original 4-day institute. 75% of the 53 original participants (n=33) remained active in the program throughout the year. 94% (n=31) of the participants remaining active completed the program and received their certificates on May 13, Of the 30 teacher-participants who achieved Certified Instructional Coaching status in the year, only one has left the SDPBC. Two moved to non-title 1 schools while one accepted employment at the Area 2 Office. Four others transferred to other Title 1 schools. Therefore, of the 30 certified coaches, 27 continue to serve Title 1 students in the SDPBC; 29 still serve Palm Beach County students. Page 3

4 Goals for Certified Instructional Coaching Program In , University of Florida Certified Instructional Coaching personnel will transition to a more advisory role. The SDPBC personnel who served as co-facilitators with UF personnel in the academic year will lead the 4-day summer institute planned for August 3-6, 2015 and will also lead the six follow-up sessions. The follow-up sessions will continue to utilize the same format (one half-day of coaching in the morning session with one half-day of STEM activities in the afternoon) and will be held on: September 9-10, 2015 October 6-7, 2015 November 3-4, 2015 December 2-3, 2015 February 2-3, 2016 May 12, 2016 Two new co-facilitators will be recruited; these new co-facilitators will work closely with the SDPBC personnel leading all the sessions to continue to build district capacity for coaching professional development. The two new co-facilitators recommended for the school year are Rocio Shaw (Teacher, Diamond View School) and Victoria Ondo (Teacher, Seminole Trails School). Other goals for include: Develop and implement field trips for the coaching participants to two area STEM-related businesses Recruit exemplary STEM teachers from district elementary and secondary classrooms to work with the STEM Integration Specialist to demonstrate STEM lessons during the follow-up sessions Recruit an additional 60 teachers to the Certified Instructional Coaching program Exceed the 75% retention rate from Page 4
