4 YEAR ROUND ENGLISH LANGUAGE COURSE Our full-time English Language course which is available to study year round. This course offers a combination of general English classes and language learning specific to your personal, professional or academic needs (target modules). You will choose a pathway that is suitable for your individual language needs. We offer two pathways; English for University Study and English for Personal and Professional Study. COURSE STRUCTURE General English Classes 14 hours per week You will study for 14 hours per week with a focus on improving your grammar, vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading, writing and study skills. You will follow a course book (included in the tuition fees). Target Module Classes 6 hours per week You will choose a target module to study. The target modules have been designed to address specific language needs. Your choice of target module will depend on your current level of English and your chosen study route. From September to June the following target modules will be available to you: When? September - August Various start dates available Length of study Minimum 4 weeks, maximum 45 weeks Minimum age for entry 18 Hours per week minimum 20 hours per week which includes 14 hours per week general English and 6 hours of target modules What is the maximum class size? 16 Entry requirements IELTS 3.0 overall and in each sub-skill: listening, reading, writing and speaking. This course is not suitable for students with IELTS 6.5 or above. Tuition fee: 320 per week Check available start dates and apply: English for University Study Route: This route is for students who would like to study at an English speaking University. The course is ideal for you if you need to improve your English language proficiency in order to progress to one of our Pre-sessional courses, or an undergraduate or postgraduate course. English for Personal and Professional Study Route: This route is aimed at students who wish to develop their language skills in order to enhance their career prospects or who simply wish to be able to communicate more effectively in English. The course is ideal if you wish to progress further in your professional development in an English speaking country, or progress your career using your English language skills. Students on the course are given membership to the International Society ( who provide social events and excursions (some trips may incur additional fees). English for University Study Route: Target Modules may include: - Skills for University (English for Academic Purposes) academic speaking, listening, reading, writing and study strategies. academic skills (e.g. referencing, paraphrasing, note-taking and presentation skills). - Topics for IELTS vocabulary for key topic areas that regularly appear in the IELTS test skills required for the IELTS test - Integrated Skills and British Culture all four language skills: speaking, listening, reading, writing thematic areas integrating these skills - IELTS Test Preparation strategies for practising the four skills intensive test practice - Advanced Skills and British Culture advanced skills practice in all four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) thematic areas integrating these skills English for Personal and Professional Study Route Target Modules may include: - English for Business and Management language needed in the context of business and management thematic areas for integrating all four skills - Integrated Skills and British Culture all four language skills: speaking, listening, reading, writing thematic areas integrating these skills - IELTS Test Preparation strategies for practising the four skills intensive test practice - Advanced Skills and British Culture advanced skills practice in all four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) thematic areas integrating these skills From July to September, students on both pathways will be able to study on the Integrated Skills with British Cultural Studies or English for Academic Purposes (with IELTS Preparation) target modules. 6 7
5 ENGLISH SUMMER PROGRAMME PRE-SESSIONAL COURSES The English Summer Programme is ideally suited to overseas university students or anyone who wishes to visit the North of England, improve their English language proficiency and have the opportunity to meet other students from around the world. When? July - September Various start dates available Length of study Minimum 3 weeks, maximum 10 weeks Minimum age for entry 18 Hours per week Minimum 20 hours per week which includes 14 hours of general English and 6 hours of Integrated Skills with British Cultural Studies/English for Academic Purposes (with IELTS preparation) What is the maximum class size? 16 Entry Requirements IELTS 3.0 overall and in each sub-skill: listening, reading, writing and speaking. This course is not suitable for students with IELTS 6.5 or above. Tuition fee: 320 per week Check available start dates and apply: englishsummerprogramme The course is supplemented by a lively evening and weekend social programme which is provided by the International Society ( Membership to the society is included in the tuition fee. Some trips or activities may incur an additional charge. You will study general English for 14 hours per week and Integrated Skills with British Cultural Studies/English for Academic Purposes (with IELTS preparation) for the remaining 6 hours. This will usually include the opportunity to go on local educational visits. The Pre-sessional courses are designed to help you develop the academic skills you need to progress to a university foundation, undergraduate or postgraduate course at The University of Manchester. Our Pre-sessional courses last between 3 and 20 weeks. The length of the course you will be required to take will be determined by the academic School to which you have applied, with advice from the University Language Centre. All our Pre-sessional courses cover academic writing, reading, listening and speaking and will help you to develop your skills of independent learning and critical thinking. You will also have the opportunity to get to know the University campus and style of teaching and learning before you start on your degree level course. Our courses are of the highest quality and are accredited by the British Council and BALEAP the global forum for EAP professionals. When? April September Length of study 3 20 weeks Minimum age for entry 18 Hours per week minimum 20 hours per week What is the maximum class size? 16 Apply now: Entry Requirements For students with a conditional offer to study at The University of Manchester, the decision to allow you to study on a Pre-sessional course lies with your academic school. Before applying for a Pre-sessional course, you should contact your School or refer to your main course offer letter to check if you are eligible. Our 3 week Pre-sessional course is open to unconditional offer holders at The University of Manchester who have a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 overall. Indicative guide only: I need to increase my score (overall or by sub-skill) by: 1.5 (IELTS bands) 20 weeks 1.0 (IELTS bands) 10 weeks 0.5 (IELTS bands) 6 weeks No increase needed 3 weeks Minimum Pre-sessional Length *The PS10a course is only open to applicants with a minimum 6.0 overall in IELTS, 5.5 in writing. Students who must increase their score in writing or in multiple sub-skills may be required to take a longer Pre-sessional course than indicated above. Students with a score of 4.5 will not be eligible for our Pre-sessional courses and should consider our Year Round English course (see page 6). 8 9

Before starting I was really nervous about my poor English, but, when I finished, I realised that the most important thing is practice. 20 and 10 Week Pre-sessional courses Our 20 and 10 week Pre-sessional courses are aimed at students who need to learn academic skills and raise their overall level of English Language proficiency in order to meet the requirements of their offer. The courses will teach you the key skills in academic writing, reading, listening and speaking to help you succeed in your future studies. Students on the 20 week course will join students on the 10 week course for the second half of their period of study. During the 10 week course, we aim for you to spend 3 hours per week with students progressing on to similar broad subject areas. These lessons will help you to practice integrated academic skills and critical thinking in relation to your broad subject area. 6 week Pre-sessional course Students on the 6 week Pre-sessional course will follow a targeted programme designed specifically for those students who are 0.5 bands away from their University offer. 3 week Pre-sessional course for unconditional offer holders If you have already met the English Language conditions for your main school, but would like to improve your academic skills and familiarise yourself with the campus to get the best out of your studies here at Manchester, our 3 week Pre-sessional course is suitable for you. How will I be assessed? Students on our Pre-sessional courses will be continuously assessed throughout the course. You will complete written assignments and oral presentations. Unconditional offer holders will also be tested formally in their reading and listening skills. All assessment will contribute to your final ULC assessment band. We ve learned a lot about the principles which can be used in academic writing how to use references, avoid informal language and build the whole structure of an essay. I ve treated it like a warm-up it s helped me to get used to a new life in a strange country. I ve also made lots of friends from different countries, such as Brazil and Iraq. Our tutor also introduced us to the learning facilities at the University, such as the Main Library and the Albert Gilbert Learning Commons. Taking a Pre-sessional course will be a really unforgettable time in your life. Just go for it you ll improve your English skills before your main course begins. 7 IELTS EXAM PREPARATION COURSES Our IELTS preparation courses (IPC) are ideal for students who are looking for a short course to support and guide them in preparing for the IELTS examination (Standard and UKVI tests). The University Language Centre is an IELTS test centre (non-ukvi) with a UKVI IELTS test centre located nearby, making the Centre a perfect location for studying and taking an IELTS exam. The course will provide opportunities for candidates to practise exam techniques and develop useful strategies to increase their confidence in taking the IELTS exam. Students will be provided with a book of practice tests (included in the course fee). The course covers the four skills tested in the IELTS exam with up to 38% of the course devoted to the writing test. Listening and Reading will comprise approximately 17% each, and Speaking approximately 21% of the course. A general overview of the test and test day will also be covered. When? Full-time course: September, January and April Part-time course: February and May Length of study Part-time course 4 weeks, Full time course 1 week Minimum age for entry 18 Hours per week Part time course Monday Friday 4pm 6pm (8 hours per week) Full time course Monday Friday 09: pm What is the maximum class size? 16 Entry Requirements IELTS 5.5 overall and in each sub-skill: listening, reading, writing and speaking. Entry test available for students with no previous exam score. Apply now: At the end of the course you can book two optional add-ons: Writing Practice and Feedback - 40 You will have the opportunity to submit an IELTS writing task essay for review by one of our tutors. You will be provided with detailed written and verbal feedback on your essay, with tips on how you can improve. Mock speaking test with feedback - 40 You will have the opportunity to take another mock speaking test with one of our tutors. You will receive detailed verbal feedback on your speaking test and advice on areas to improve. The IELTS centre at the University Language Centre offers standard (non-ukvi) Academic and General Training IELTS tests. Available dates 11th September 15th September 15th January to 19th January 14th May 19th May 5th February 2nd March 21st May 15th June IELTS assesses the English Language proficiency of people who want to study or work where English is used as the language of communication. 8 TRINITY CertTESOL COURSE IN-SESSIONAL ENGLISH ACADEMIC SUPPORT The CertTESOL course is the first step on to a career in Teaching English to Speakers of other languages. This full-time or part-time course is aimed at those with little or no experience of teaching. The course is validated by Trinity College, London and successful completion leads to the formal award of Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (Cert TESOL). The course is a combination of input on theory, skills, methodology and teaching practice. The course is highly intensive consisting of minimum 130 hours (timetabled) with an additional 15 hours of unsupervised study time. Each trainee must also complete 6 hours of formally assessed teaching practice. Speaking and Listening Our speaking and listening courses will help you to develop your confidence and effectiveness in using spoken English in a range of academic situations and improve your academic listening skills. You will learn strategies to help you obtain complex information, negotiate, persuade, and deliver short informative talks and take part in small group discussions. Pronunciation These classes will help you to improve your pronunciation of English, focusing on the features of natural spoken English in various situations. Grammar Our grammar classes will examine areas of English grammar which are particularly useful for academic writing. You will cover areas such as error analysis, complex noun phrases, sentence patterns, information focus and article use. Academic Writing This course will help you to write clear, grammatically accurate and well-organised academic English. You will have the opportunity to examine and discuss the language used in academic texts as well as a chance to practice writing tasks, both individually and in groups. Academic Writing Tutorials As well as our in-sessional classes, we are also pleased to offer students the option of a oneto-one academic writing tutorial. You can submit a sample of your own writing when booking a tutorial. The tutor will then be able to tailor advice and feedback specific to your needs. 9 ACCOMMODATION YOU AND THE UNIVERSITY At the University Language Centre we understand how important it is to feel safe and comfortable during your time in Manchester. Whether you are travelling to Manchester alone or with your family, there is a wide range of accommodation available to choose from: Homestay From September to June, the University Language Centre offers homestay accommodation to full-time English language students. Homestay providers reflect the diverse, multicultural city of Manchester and give you the opportunity to practise language skills, meet new people and make new friends. During the week, breakfast and an evening meal will be provided and during the weekend, three meals will be provided each day. You will have your own bedroom, shared use of a bathroom and communal areas, and use of laundry facilities. Most homestay providers live within 7 miles of the University campus, and all live within 20 miles. Homestay accommodation is provided in partnership with a homestay agent. All homestay providers are inspected before they are accepted to host our students and are re-inspected every two years. Living in University Halls gives you a more independent accommodation experience. This type of accommodation gives you the opportunity to make new friends, encounter people from diverse social and cultural backgrounds and practise your social and language skills. This type of accommodation is more suitable for single students; however there are a limited number of rooms available to couple and families. Private accommodation can easily be sourced from Manchester Student Homes, a department of the University of Manchester which help students to find privately rented accommodation and provide housing advice. Manchester Student s Union is home to a huge variety of societies. Joining a society is a great way for you to meet new people and enrich your time here at the Language Centre. The Student s Union also offers plenty of opportunities to volunteer with year round events. You can discover new bands, see famous pop acts and listen to classical performances. 2 1 Shopping Manchester is renowned for its shopping facilities, with its mix of British designers, worldwide brands and quirky independent shops. 3 Sport Manchester is well known for its two Premier League football teams: Manchester United and Manchester City, but there is much more to discover. You can watch international Cricket at Lancashire Cricket club, go cycling at the National Cycling Centre, go skiing at the Chill Factore or swim in Manchester Aquatics Centre. 4 Visit Museums and Galleries There are a range of cultural attractions available to you in Manchester.
