2 Staff Development and Professional Learning FROM THE OFFICE OF STAFF DEVELOPMENT On behalf of all the staff members and instructors of Rapid City Area Schools, Staff Development, we welcome you to the new look of the Professional Growth/Staff Development 2015 Summer professional learning opportunities flyer. This will hopefully be the start of some fresh, new opportunities for professional learning and growth in the district and community. During the Summer 2015 you will find several new and exciting course offerings as well as some popular courses from the past. You can increase your technology skills in one of the new technology courses, build your understanding of assessment in the standards-based grading course, or improve interactions with students through civil discourse or PBIS for classrooms. If you are wishing to become a teacher or wanting to get your South Dakota teaching certificate, the district offers two of the required courses, Human Relations and South Dakota Indian Studies at a reduced rate. 4 Staff Development and Professional Learning REGISTRATION AND CANCELLATION INFORMATION All courses advertised in the Professional Growth Flyer are offered for several types of credit through many colleges or universities. Every course requires a $50.00 registration fee per credit hour to enroll. When registering for more than one class, each class requires separate payment. Class fees are not deposited until the first day of the class. Audit, Continuing Education Hours (CEUs), and Career Enhancement hours (CE) are included in the course registration fees. Upon completion of the course, certificates will be given or mailed to the course participant. Undergraduate and graduate credit is available for most courses for an additional fee. The cost for credit is determined by the college or university and ranges in price from $ $45.00 per credit hour. When paying for college/university fees, two separate checks are required. Rapid City Area Schools currently does not accept credit cards for the course fees. Registration Form Complete the registration form at the back of this booklet. Detach at the dotted line and mail or drop off the form and registration fee(s) to: Dixie Stephens Rapid City Area Schools Office of Staff Development 300 Sixth St. Rapid City, SD Class Confirmation Registration is confirmed by your payment of the course fee when you return the registration form. NO registration is complete until fees are paid. You will not receive a confirmation notice. Class Cancellations The Rapid City Area Schools determines the cancellation of a class due to insufficient enrollment. You will be notified and your money refunded. Cancellations Due To Weather When the Rapid City Area Schools (RCAS) are closed due to inclement weather, Professional Growth classes are also cancelled. To Cancel a Registration To ensure a full refund you must contact the Office of Staff Development to withdraw from the class ten days prior to the first session of class. If you withdraw from the class less than ten days prior to the first class session, you will forfeit your RCAS fee. Lane Change/Salary Adjustment Classes must be taken for graduate credit to be eligible for lane change or salary adjustments. Continuing education hours are not eligible. All employees requesting approval of courses that are not offered through RCAS which have salary implications must submit those courses or related inservice courses for approval to the Office of Staff Development/Human Resources. It comes veiled in love and wanting better for our children and ourselves. We will examine the roots of entitlement and how Love and Logic techniques can teach adults to teach kids the joys of self-control, responsibility, limits, and that nothing worthwhile comes without effort and hard work. Nancy Williams Tech Center LOVE & LOGIC AND THE UNDERACHIEVER Myrna Becker Registration Deadline: July 6 Kids who appear lazy, unmotivated, uncaring, and are non-productive are often unaware of what is wrong. These behaviors frustrate adults leaving them trying every trick in the book to get this kid to produce something other than a blank stare. This class will help unlock the secret to those kids. 7 Behavior Management & Health/PE CLASSROOM PBIS: MANAGING BEHAVIORS IN THE CLASSROOM Darla McKernan Grades Pre K - 5 Registration Deadline: June 8 Participants will learn to create a positive, engaging, safe and respectful classroom environment along with strategies to help foster emotional intelligence of teachers first, then students. Participants will also develop a greater understanding of the behaviors being displayed by students and strategies to deal with those behaviors and to engage students in classroom activities and expectations. All participants will team up and learn new PE activities, instructional strategies and assessments on the go, and how to make or where to buy low cost/no cost equipment. Come and learn how to incorporate brain breaks in the classroom, new ideas to help create positive, healthy recess activities, and enjoy healthy competition with other colleagues. NON-VIOLENT CRISIS INTERVENTION Nancy Pruitt and Carey Harmon Registration Deadline: August 3 This workshop assists with addressing the following questions: How do I recognize the early warning signs a person s behavior may escalate? How can I intervene effectively before the person s behavior becomes dangerous? What methods may be used to help control/de-escalate the violence while fostering the care, welfare, safety, and security for all individuals involved? The Crisis Prevention Institute s Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Program strives to balance practical applications and humanistic concerns. This class will clarify the basic elements of violent behavior and identify how a crisis may escalate or de-escalate. Participants will explore strategies used by millions of human service professionals faced with challenging behaviors. Required Text: Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Blue Card Participant Workbook. A large percentage of your students are kinesthetic learners and every child benefits from movement. One of the best strategies in the classroom to improve student test scores is to integrate movement into the core subjects. In this workshop, expert classroom teachers and physical education teachers will collaborate and learn how, where, and when to integrate strategies and assessments to enhance learning. 8 History HUMAN RELATIONS Jr. Bettelyoun Registration Deadline: June 1 This course focuses on the characteristics, contributions, and strengths of a pluralistic society. Various cultural perspectives and specific information about cultures will be presented. Participants will engage in discussions regarding the dehumanizing impact of biases and negative stereotypes. This course will prepare participants for the human relations approach to teaching. This course fulfills the 3 credit hour Human Relations requirement for South Dakota teacher certification. Through the use of museum studies, living history presentations and on-site tours, participants will develop a working knowledge of the famous and not-so famous inhabitants of Deadwood Gulch. This class involves a lot of walking. Current cultural issues including values, family structure, legends, economics, government policies, treaties, and related areas will be presented. Participants will also engage in discussions dealing with stereotypes and the process of addressing stereotypes within the classroom setting. The course will prepare participants to teach more effectively. This course fulfills the 3 credit hour Indian Studies requirement for South Dakota teacher certification. Through living history presentations, historical re-enactments, demonstrations, stage plays, on-site tours and lecture, participants will be introduced to some of the more notorious elements who walked the streets of old Deadwood. 9 History DEADWOOD III: UPPER DEADWOOD GULCH/LEAD Randy and Cindy Christensen Registration Deadline: August 7 This course involves a historical walk through the early golden days of mining. Participants will gain an awareness of the history of the former mining towns of Upper Deadwood Gulch and Lead, the Homestake Mine. Through the use of on-site tours, walking tours, and presentations by local experts, participants will be introduced to the fascinating history of the towns and its inhabitants. This class involves a lot of walking. August 15, 16 8 am 4:30 pm Chamber of Commerce, 767 Main Street, Deadwood, SD 1 credit (optional) Undergraduate/Graduate add $45 HISTORY WORLD RELIGIONS, WISDOM TRADITIONS Chris Heacock Registration Deadline: July 21 Learn about the similarities between religions and sacred belief systems that have persisted over time and place. This class will explore spiritual practices from historical, sociological, and psychological perspectives. Our focus will be on the wisdom of the various religions, not the politics. We will begin by discussing universal themes and then proceed chronologically, beginning with indigenous spirituality, moving on to religions originating in Asia, then religions originating in the Middle East. The RCAS fee of $50.00 will be returned to participants upon successful completion of this class. This reimbursement is made possible through the RCAS Civil Discourse Project which is funded by the John T. Vucurevich Foundation. July 28, 29, 30 Rapid City High School, Room am 3 pm 1 credit (optional) Undergraduate/Graduate add $45 CAVALRY IN THE HILLS Randy and Cindy Christensen Registration Deadline: September 11 This class surveys the U.S. Cavalry s impact on the Black Hills region. Through lectures, museum/cemetery studies, presentations by local historians and professional reenactments, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the history of Ft. Meade, The Peace Keeper Post on the Dakota Frontier, and the surrounding area. This class involves a lot of walking. September 19, 20 Ft. 10 Math DEVELOPING NUMBER KNOWLEDGE IN ELEMENTARY STUDENTS Diane Wimp Grades PreK - 5 Registration Deadline: June 8 In this course, participants will read, discuss and explore the text, Teaching Numbers in the Classroom or Developing Number Knowledge to design ways to help students develop number knowledge. Participants will learn and practice activities and assessments to help students in the areas of structuring numbers, knowledge of number words and numerals, conceptual place value, early counting strategies, as well as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division strategies. Participants will discover the research behind the math screener questions, and how to help students after the assessment. Educators will learn how to develop and use discourse analysis tools to analyze and improve discourse in the classroom. Educators will learn practical teaching strategies for building students abilities to engage in constructive face-to-face interactions and collaborate with other educators sharing ideas and strategies for improving students abilities to engage and enrich academic discourse in mathematics. Participants will explore the practices in depth, look at the practices vertically by grade level, and develop questions/activities that promote the practice. Participants will have time to develop lessons to explicitly teach their students the behaviors of successful mathematicians. 11 Math & Science CLASSROOM DISCUSSION TO PROMOTE UNDERSTANDING Stacie Tschetter Grades PreK 8 Registration Deadline: July 13 This course is for educators who are interested in the role classroom discussions play in deepening students mathematical understanding and learning. Through readings, videos, discussions, and activities, participants will explore why talk is critical to learning and how productive math talk can be fostered. Knowledge gained from this study will assist educators in understanding and teaching to the Common Core State Standards for Mathematical Practice. This course also supports work in Domains 2 and 3 in the Danielson Framework for teaching. Suggested Reading: Five Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions by Margaret Smith and Mary Kay Stein. GLOBE's vision promotes and supports students, teachers and scientists to collaborate on inquiry-based investigations of the environment working in close partnership with NASA, NOAA and NSF. Learn how to study Earth System Science using GLOBE science-based storybooks designed to introduce students to key concepts in water, soil, clouds, seasons, and Earth system studies, as well as interrelated subjects including weather and phenology. Teachers will leave this workshop as certified Elementary GLOBE teachers. The RCAS fee of $50.00 will be returned to participants upon successful completion of this class. 12 Technology ACTIVLEARNING CORE ESSENTIALS Trent Moehlman Registration Deadline: August 3 This course will support the growing interactive whiteboard learning community regarding the fundamentals of the ActivClassroom. Topics of study will include visual learning, ActivInspire s main tools, Promethean Planet, trouble-shooting tips, and ideas for integrating interactive whiteboards into the learning environment. Ed Staff Registration Deadline: June 1 College? Tech School? The world of work? What s good for some students doesn t work for others. This class will offer experiential activities with the National Career Readiness Certificate assessment, SD MyLife and our local technical school (WDT). Participants will be exposed to the 16 SD Career Clusters and explore job growth statistics and trends in our state. This is a blended course (part face-to-face and part online). The class will meet together on one day, June 9, and the remainder of the work will be completed and submitted online. The objectives of this workshop are to strengthen interactive instructional approaches and to provide time to develop a portfolio of ActivInspire resources. Requirement: A basic level of experience with ActivInspire is required for this course. 13 Technology STOP COLLECTING INTERNET RESOURCES AND START USING THEM Trent Moehlman Registration Deadline: June 1 Digital resources are everywhere and teachers have probably located many great ones with the intention of using them in the classroom but forgot where they saved them. Once located, making them accessible to students can be a challenge. This course will help participants locate, organize, and distribute all of the great resources available. All tools are web-based and resources will be accessible with Internet access. June 8, 9, 10, 11 1 pm 5 pm Lincoln Tech Center Training Lab, Room 1 Main Entrance 1 Undergraduate/Graduate: add $45 COLLABORATING WITH TEAM SITES Trent Moehlman RCAS DISTRICT STAFF ONLY Registration Deadline: May 22 The PLC process requires collaboration within a building and across the district. RCAS uses Microsoft Team Sites to help facilitate this collaboration. The first step involves setting up document libraries where teams can share documents. Team Sites can do much more and this course will explore many of the tools available to help teams communicate and work more effectively. This class is ideal for the employees that are responsible for maintaining the buildings or administrative department team sites or teachers who maintain their PLC groups site. 17 Staff Development and Professional Learning INSTRUCTOR INFORMATION The Office of Staff Development is accepting proposals for Professional Growth/Staff Development courses for the 2015 Fall semester. The fall course term will begin on 10/1/2015 and extends through 12/18/2015. No classes will be allowed to meet on school observed holidays, conferences, and special events. Please see the RCAS school calendar for All class proposals must be in the Office of Staff Development no later than Friday, June 5, Course proposals are processed on a first come first served basis. Incomplete proposals will not be advertised in the flyer. The RCAS Staff Development courses are self-supporting. Instructors fees are established by the negotiated agreement. Instructors are currently paid $ per credit hour for teaching a course. Upon mutual agreement with the Staff Development Coordinator, an instructor may accept pro-rated compensation for her/his professional service. With instructor consent, this allows a class to be offered with less than 16 participants, with the instructor s compensation rate of $50.00 per student per credit hour. COURSE PROCESS AND GUIDELINES 1) The college/university course proposal forms are available on-line at Staff Development, (right-side) you will find the Course Proposal Forms. Instructors choose the college/university that will best meet the needs of the participants. Please complete all four forms and your proposal to dixie.stephens@k12.sd.us. 2) NEW! In addition to the university/college proposal forms instructors must complete the RCAS Workshop & Graduate Course Proposal Form. The RCAS Professional Growth Committee has designed this new form to gather additional information about workshop and course alignment to District-wide goals and objectives. 3) A one-credit class must be at least 15 contact hours for one (1) college credit, 30 contact hours for a two (2) credit class, and 45 contact hours for a three (3) credit class.. 4) Course instructors qualifications must include a Master s Degree +30 additional hours of graduate credit. In the instance that a course instructor does not have a Masters +30, an instructor of record who holds these qualifications may sponsor the instructor. The instructor of record assumes responsibility for overseeing the course quality and signing the paperwork. The Office of Staff Development can act as instructor of record if needed. 5) All classes must be offered for undergraduate and graduate level credit as well as continuing education contact hours (C.E.U.). There may be different evaluation requirements for each credit level. 6) Any material fee needs to be specified at the time a course proposal is submitted. Material fees are charged for printing, materials, books, or supplies that the student will consume or keep. If printing is needed for a class, all items must be received in the Office of Staff Development ten (10) working days in advance of the class. The fee may not exceed $ All materials must be ordered through the Office of Staff Development. 7) If an instructor chooses to have a guest speaker, the cost of that speaker may not be passed on to the students through additional charges. In some instances, it may be possible to compensate a RCAS district employee who is a guest speaker for a maximum of five (5) hours of additional pay. Please contact Dustin Blaha, Staff Development Coordinator, for prior approval. 8) All classes are held in Rapid City Area School buildings. The Office of Staff Development along with the Office of Custodial & Security Services determines where the classes are held. If there is a building preference, please indicate the location on the description for the flyer and we will try to honor the request. 9) When Rapid City Area Schools are closed or if after-school activities are cancelled due to inclement weather, the Professional Growth Classes are also cancelled. Please discuss this policy with the class. We also suggest you develop a plan for communicating the cancellation of a class with students so that everyone is able to be notified in advance. 10) Class registration will close five (5) business days before the class start date. No registrations will be taken after that. Instructors are NOT to accept any registrations from students. 11) Prior to the first class meeting the instructor will need to pick up a class packet of materials and instructions at the Office of Staff Development. Transcripted credit is issued from an accredited college/university upon completion of a course when taken for undergraduate or graduate credit. 4) Renewal Requirements. Bachelor s degree. You need 6 credits. At least three credits must be transcripted; the remaining credits may be CEU hours. Advanced degree. You need 6 credits.
