Mr Sam Puglisi Contact Person Principal s Foreword Introduction Our College continues to offer a wide range of educational opportunities to students from a diverse academic and social background. The multiple pathways program offered to all students is a major attraction with particular interest in the Vocational Education Program available to students in Years 11/12. saw the College's total enrolments increase as a result of the increased interest in our Year 11/12 program. This trend is expected to continue for 2011 and into the future. All Year 12 students were awarded one or more Vocational Educational Training Qualifications & 6 students enrolled at University. Above all we aim to provide a caring and inclusive Catholic environment. Acceptance and celebration of diversity are paramount to our existence. Our College community is inspired by St Maximillian Kolbe and St Marcellin Champagnat. Both promoted values such as humility, simplicity, family spirit and love of Jesus. 2 Curriculum offerings Our distinctive curriculum offerings Students in Years 8-10 study a wide range of subjects including: English, Religion, Mathematics, Science, HPE, SOSE, Home Economics, Manual Arts, Drama, Music, Business Studies, Agricultural Studies, Computer Studies, Graphigcs, Art and Dance. Vocational Education becomes a focal aspect of the College from Year 10 onwards. This becomes central to the curriculum offered in Years 11/12. Subjects offered in Senior include: English Communication, Religion & Ethics and Pre-Vocational Mathematics as the three core subjects. Students chose two more from: Computer Studies, Business Studies, Recreation, Visual Art, Hospitality, Music and Agricultural Studies. All students enrolled in Years 11/12 are eligible for the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). Students completing Year 12 at our College are not eligible for Overall Position (OP). Extra curricula activities All students have the opportunity to take part in Sport and Recreation every Thursday afternoon. Students participate in regular sport such as soccer, basketball, etc... or join in the various activities available such as indoor soccer, indoor rock climbing, ten pin bowling, study session etc... Students take part in the usual carnivals e. g. swimming, cross country, athletics... throughout the year. They also attend camps, go on retreats and attend various other events/functions during the year. All Year 11 and 12 students participate in some form of (out of school) Vocational Education activity one day a week. ANNUAL SCHOOL REPORTING
3 How Information and Communication Technologies are used to assist learning All staff have been issued with their own laptop with wireless connectivity available throughout the College campus. We started rolling out the 1-1 laptop program in with the Year 9 cohort and continue with the roll out in Students also have access to three computer labs. The College has wireless access and all students have internet access. A number of apple computers for use specifically in the Music department were set up in. Social climate We have a very diverse student population with many students requiring extra learning support. About 35 of our students are verified with an officially accepted impairment e. g. ASD, Intellectual Impairment, Speech Language Impairment etc... Students come to Mt Maria College Petrie from far and wide seeking the specialized support we offer. We run a Pastoral Care program in every year level and provide a warm and caring environment for all students. This is very much emphasized by the fact that we only have 230 students in the whole College. The small size is very conducive to our students. This single factor is the most commonly quoted reason (by parents) for choosing our College. Parent, student and teacher satisfaction with the school Teacher satisfaction is high as can be easily verified by the very high level of staff retention at the end of each year. The College is also very fortunate and enjoys an exceptional high level of staff participation in all functions held throughout the year. This level of commitment and participation is demonstrated by both teaching and non teaching staff. The large majority of students are very happy at the College as seen by the high attendance rate. Another significant factor which demonstrates the high level of satisfaction, is the number of students who leave our College at the end of the year only to return to us a week or two into the following school year. Parents have always indicated a very high level of satisfaction. This is largely due to the strong level of commitment, support and compassion demonstrated constantly to all students. A high of parents consider choose our College as the "only option" for their child rather than simply "another option". ANNUAL SCHOOL REPORTING
4 Involving parents in their child s education Parents have the opportunity for input via the P&F in matters that may concern the whole College. There are also numerous ways they can get involved in their own child's education. This usually happens through attending: Information sessions, Enrolment Support Meetings, Individual Education Program Parent/Teacher Interviews etc... Parents are strongly encouraged top contact the College and to come for an interview anytime the need arises. Opportunities for professional development and/or inservice is also available to individual staff members throughout the year.
