For those of you who attended our Back to School Night, some of this may sound familiar, but I strongly believe that goals cannot be overshared if you really mean them. 1. Increased Student Recognition-- We are working to increase the amount of student recognition we are engaged in here at NKHS and hope that it will be evident to you as the school year continues. From noting classroom accomplishments, to highlighting students as they portray our Viking Characteristics, to noting the amazing and unique accomplishments of our talented student body, we want students to know that we see them when they are doing great things. If there are creative ways you can think of to recognize our students here for their accomplishments, please let us know. 2. Increased Student Attendance-- When we started analyzing our data trends, one piece of information that stood out was our attendance data. We have a large number of students who miss school for any number of reasons. Each day that a student misses is a day of learning that didn t occur to the highest level possible. We are working to streamline our processes and keep kids engaged in their learning here at NKHS. I ask that you work with your students on coming to school as often as possible. 3. School Spirit and Community Involvement-- Students who are actively involved in their school are more successful than students who are not. At NKHS, we believe firmly in the importance of every student having a home at our school, a place where they belong and feel connected to other students and staff. If your (Cont d on page 2)

2 Principal s Message Continued (cont d) student hasn t yet found a way to be involved in something at school, from music to athletics to clubs (we have 41 approved clubs already), have him or her go to our ASB office and talk with Mr. Stanford. He will help them figure out how to start a new club or get involved in an activity that meets his or her needs. 4. Increased Graduation Rate We have been working diligently on this goal for many years now and have made gains each year. We want students to leave our campus with the skills and knowledge to be successful citizens in our community. This means completing the formal course of study to graduate. We will continue to work on building programs and strategies in order to help each and every student graduate from NKHS. Our School Board has set the goal for our district graduation rate to be in the top 5% of the state. We are well on our way to meeting this goal and will continue to work on it. 5. Ensure a Rigorous Course of Study that Provide for College and Career Readiness We want every student to leave NKHS with skills and knowledge to enter the workplace or high education and be successful. This means constantly re-evaluating our programs to ensure they are providing for the varied needs of our student body and an ever-changing workplace. To this end, you will see us sending out some surveys to analyze the needs and interests of our students. Partnered with research about job and career trends, we will continue to build and grow programs that meet contemporary demands. We have many exciting events coming up at NKHS! We re looking forward to seeing you all at our Parent-Teacher Conference on October 26th and 27th. We are also excited about the upcoming Holiday Fest, which is our largest ASB fundraiser. Finally, a huge congratulations to three amazing students: Jessica Radford, Jake Seaberg, and Ryan Shane. All thr ee students received commendations from the National Merit Scholarship Foundation, making them three of the highest scoring PSAT students in the country. We are so proud of our talented Vikings! Warmly, Megan Sawicki Principal Page 2

4 PARENT NOTIFICATIONS Parent Notifications are posted year-round on the District website at under For Families, Annual Notifications. Federal Impact Aid Survey North Kitsap School District is conducting the Federal Impact Aid Survey. Survey Cards were given out to students on October 2. All students attending North Kitsap schools should have brought surveys home. Parents and guardians are asked to legibly fill out one form for each family (up to 7 children on a form) attending school in black ink, date, sign, and return them ASAP. This essential survey provides the district with information about parent employment and residency, which helps schools qualify for additional federal funding through the Federal Impact Aid Program grant. Yearbook: Senior Advertisements Attention Senior Parents: You will be receiving a flyer in the mail with information on Senior Advertisements for the yearbook! There are deadlines. November 9th will be on of the first ones. Please make a note of these dates. There will not be extra room in the book if you miss them. Don t wait. If the space if full, we cannot add any later. 6 En Français s il vous plaît Bonjour! I hope you have all had a positive start to the school year. In our French classes, tout va bien! We have a great group of students headed to Paris and the French Riviera in April. If your student would like to join us, please visit our tour website: EFTours.com/ pk The final date for signing up is December 8 th. During 2019 we are hoping to do a Spain/France/Germany tour with several teachers and students from NKHS. We ll have more details about that at a later date. These are not district-sponsored trips, and as such there is special insurance associated with the educational travel company that we use. Our level II and advanced French students will soon be writing back to their pen pals at our sister school in Saint-Nazaire, France. What a neat opportunity to create friendships across the world! In February, there will be a short-term home stay opportunity if any of you would like to host a French teenage visitor for three weeks. Please find out more at LanguageAndFriendship.com I would be happy to answer any questions you or your student may have. It is a neat way to bring the French language and culture into your home and hearts. The advanced students are working hard and gaining new skills via our University of WA in the High School program. They have the opportunity of earning 5 credits at the UW, while passing the French 103 course here on our campus. We are observed by French professors from the Seattle campus, and we follow their curriculum. The French II students are getting used to a new curriculum, and are speaking more and more French every day. It is a challenging year full of new promise, new grammar and vocabulary, and new skills. I am very proud of these students. The French I students are enthusiastic, kind, and hard-working. They just had their first speaking quiz, et c était très réussi! I feel privileged to work with such large groups of motivated young people. Please don t hesitate to contact me if I can be of help to you or your students. My classroom phone number is and my address is lhaveman@nkschools.org Bonne continuation! Madame (Lola) Haveman Page 6

7 NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM The National Merit Scholarship Program commends approximately 34,000 students throughout the nation to be recognized for their academic promise. Although these students will not continue in the 2018 competition for the National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2018 competition by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success. These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their education opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success. (commented by a spokesperson for NMSC) North Kitsap High School is proud to announce the following students have been recognized as: NATIONAL MERIT COMMENDED STUDENTS: Jessica Radford Jakob Seaberg Ryan Shane Page 7

11 PARKING PERMITS Parking permits are sold for $40 at the beginning of the school year. Students must possess a valid drivers license. All previous fines must be paid before s tudents can purchase a permit. Students can only park at NKHS with a current, visible NKHS permit displayed in the vehicle. Parking is based on first come, first serve basis for all cars with a NKHS parking permit. Currently, there are permits still available. This does not guarantee the permit holder a parking place on NKHS campus. All cars should be locked at all times. PARK AT YOUR OWN RISK. North Kitsap School District and NKHS are not responsible for theft or damage to your vehicle. OFF CAMPUS PASSES NKHS is a closed campus. However, as a privilege, juniors and seniors may apply for an off-campus permit which will allow them to be off campus during their lunch period only! Students must have all fines cleared, and turn in a completed parent permission form, (available in the Main Office). If the application is approved, an Off Campus permit sticker will be issued and placed on their NKHS ASB I.D. card. This permit is a privilege, and can be revoked by Administration or parents at any time. Page 11
