Message from Head of Department Here at the University of West London we have one of the longest standing Psychology courses in the United Kingdom, accredited with The British Psychological Society since 1986, and this is reflected in the experience and expertise we put into designing and delivering our range of courses. The Psychology staff are dedicated to continually providing a high quality, engaging and exciting student experience focused on equipping students with a strong foundation in psychological theory as well as the skills they need for further study and the world of work. First and foremost we pride ourselves on providing high quality teaching and student support. When our students leave us they not only feel that they have learned a great deal, they are also confident and eager to put that knowledge to good use. All the courses we deliver have a strong focus on employability and linking learning to the world of work, and this is reflected in the emphasis placed on application of theory and knowledge to real-life situations and scenarios. We are now delighted to have the opportunity to extend our provision to students at the University of West London in Nang Yan. We are looking forward to encourage a rich cultural and academic relationship between our students in Hong Kong and London that we know will be highly beneficial to both Institutions. Dr Maddie Ohl Head of School 7
Why should you apply for the Graduate Diploma in Psychology? The Graduate Diploma in Psychology is a carefully designed curriculum which is closely aligned to that required by the British Psychological Society, designed by UWL staff who are research active in their chosen fields. There is a strong focus on developing students critical thinking and in providing all the skills and knowledge required to plan, implement and report psychological research. Students are taught through lectures and seminars in Hong Kong, as well as online discussions by a body of research active staff within the School of Human and Social Sciences, as well as through face-to-face contact in Hong Kong. The wide range of staff involved provides opportunities for students to complete their dissertation projects on a number of topics, and using a range of methodologies. 8
Programme Structure The Graduate Diploma in Psychology comprises of seven modules that make up 160 credits in total. The course therefore provides you with a thorough grounding in the theory, themes, issues and practical skills that are central to any undergraduate psychology course. You will also be allowed to participate in up to one additional module per semester free of charge; but will not be assessed in such modules. Semester 1 Biological and Atypical Psychology (20 Credits) The overall aim of Biological and Atypical Psychology is to introduce students to the study of the brain and its interaction with the environment (e.g. behaviour). The module covers the structure and function of the nervous system from the micro (genetics and neurons) to the macro (gross anatomy and function of the nervous system) as well as applied aspects such as the biological psychology of mental health, addiction, stress and other psychologically relevant aspects of biological psychology. Atypical psychology is embedded in each of these topics. Lectures present the background concepts, theories, and related issues while seminars involve a variety of learning activities including lab-based demonstrations of neuroanatomy, physiological measurement of behaviour, group discussions of talks by leading academics in the field, and use of online activities to self-assess and develop students understanding of key issues. Students ability to communicate knowledge and understanding of basic concepts will be assessed through a short group presentation and accompanying 500 word essay, and by a 1.5 hour unseen examination (60 multiple choice questions). Individual Differences (20 Credits) This module examines the concepts, theories, methods and findings in the psychology of personality and intelligence. A key component is principles of measurement and psychometric testing in the study of similarities and differences between people. A variety of learning activities, including guided reading, lectures, and seminar activities will be employed throughout the module. Students ability to communicate knowledge and understanding of basic concepts will be assessed through a written portfolio and by an unseen examination. Further Research Methods (20 Credits) This module takes students beyond the introductory level in their research methods training in psychology and will cover some more key concepts/ issues and additional methods at a more advanced level. It will cover some more complex experimental designs, survey designs, psychometrics, and more advanced qualitative methods. The lectures will provide an overview of the key concepts, issues and procedures while the workshops will provide hands on experience of the research process. As part of the process students continue to develop skills in all aspects of the research process getting closer to the goal of becoming competent in carrying out independent research projects. 9
Semester 2 Lifespan Development (20 Credits) This module examines the concepts, theories, methods and findings in the field of developmental psychology. The module takes a lifespan perspective, focusing on human development from early childhood through to later developmental stages such as adolescence, adulthood and old-age. A variety of learning activities, including guided reading, lectures, and seminar activities will be employed throughout the module. Students ability to communicate knowledge and understanding of basic concepts will be assessed through a critical review and an unseen examination. Cognition in Action (20 credits) An overview of cognitive psychology is given by going through a range of classical topics such as perception, attention, imagery, memory, problem solving, decision making, thinking, language and concept formation. A variety of practical exercises are undertaken and several methodological approaches are visited. Learning on this module is assessed through a poster project and a seen exam. Social Psychology (20 credits) Social Psychology focuses on a variety of issues concerned with the social and interactive aspects of human behaviour. The module provides an overview of the main areas of study and introduces the diversity of social psychology, presenting the findings on a variety of topics central to social psychological enquiry. In addition, this module lays the foundation for subsequent study and research that may be pursued for the dissertation. It provides a basis for further academic consideration of these issues in social psychology, and is assessed through a portfolio project and an unseen exam. Graduate Diploma Psychology Dissertation (40 credits) This module helps you conceptualise and carry out a piece of empirical psychology research. You will learn how to present research ideas to peers and the wider academic community in verbal and poster presentations. It is the practical and theoretical realisation of what you will have learned in the Further Research Methods modules and other theorydriven modules. Your work is assessed through a poster presentation and a final written report of your research. 10

I completed the Graduate course part-time while working. This enabled me to study psychology; a discipline I was very interested in. I loved the course so much that I decided to retrain as a Psychologist. Since then, I have completed an MSc Health Psychology course and a PhD programme both at UWL and have never looked back. This course inspired me to pursue my interests and make a career out of it. Caroline Lafarge The Graduate Diploma course provided me with the Graduate Basis for Chartered membership and the academic skills to successfully complete my PhD Programme. Although it was intensive, I enjoyed every minute of it. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to change discipline and train as a Psychologist. Henry Lee Johnson 12
Staff Profiles Dr Rosemary Stock Dr Stock completed a Masters of Research at Liverpool John Moore s University, looking at a very specific type of reasoning using syllogisms (deductive reasoning tasks). When funding for a PhD studentship became available she started looking at the factors that can improve (and impair) our abilities to make judgements about probabilities and likelihoods, and after graduating she moved down to London to join UWL in More recent publications have examined predictors of academic success in university students, and the use of media multi-tasking in young adults. Her teaching is focused around Research Methods in Psychology, and leading the Graduate Diploma in Psychology course and also the Dissertation Module at Graduate Diploma and Masters level. Dr Anke Görzig Anke is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at UWL, joining the department in She is a certified child and youth worker, and has worked at a number of institutions including King s College London, Northwestern University (USA), and the University of Mannheim (Germany). Her teaching and research are both in Social Psychology and some of her early research focused on the area of stereotyping and discrimination. Her current research has a general focus on social inequality, well-being (e.g., mental health) and crossnational research. Since 2010 she has been involved with a cross-european network (www. EUKidsOnline.net) focusing on cyberbullying and adolescent risk experiences. Dr Ben Hine Dr Hine is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of West London, joining the department in Much of his research investigates attitudes towards perpetrators and victims of sexual and domestic violence. Current research investigates the impact of negative stereotypes and beliefs about rape (otherwise known as Rape Myths) on perceptions of the crime itself, and those involved. He has worked with undergraduates and officers in the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) to measure how different systems of attitudes are related to each other, as well as how the presence or absence of certain myths influence judgements made regarding responsibility, severity and legitimacy. He teaches the psychology of gender, as well as developmental psychology at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. 13
