2 THE OPPORTUNITY The next president of Brookdale Community College, considered a preeminent community college in New Jersey, will have an exciting opportunity to lead the institution to its next level of academic excellence, innovation, and financial stability. THE COLLEGE Brookdale Community College was founded in 1967 and today is a two-year, public, coeducational institution offering 75 associate degree options and certificate programs as well as community development, business development, and adult basic education programs. Serving nearly 13,000 students, Brookdale has two branch campuses, three regional locations, and two additional locations as well as its main campus located in Lincroft, New Jersey. Online students represent 7.8% of all FTEs and our online programs were recently ranked 13th in the country for community colleges. The College was established by the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders and has been generously supported by the County over the years. The College operates on additional funding from tuition and the State of New Jersey. There is an appointed Board of Trustees that hires the president, sets policies, tuition and fees, and monitors education programs. Lincroft, a part of Middletown Township, is located one hour south of New York City and 10 miles west of the New Jersey Shore. With a population of just over 6,100, Lincroft offers the amenities and lifestyle of a small town combined with the cultural, shopping, and entertainment opportunities of Philadelphia and New York City.

3 Brookdale s beautiful main campus consists of 22 buildings on 230 acres bordering the Swimming River Reservoir. Originally the campus was a race horse farm and a number of its buildings reflect that heritage. In 2010 the College completed four major construction projects worth $37 million. These included renovation of the Freehold Branch Campus, renewal of the Automotive Technologies Center, construction of a new Fitness Center, and rehabilitation of the Robert J. Collins Arena. In 2017, the College completed a state of the art classroom building at the Wall Branch Campus. The campus is also home to 366-seat Performing Arts Center, television and electronic music studios, a Center for Visual Arts, a library housing nearly 89,000 volumes and more than 75 academic data bases, a Student Life Center, 5 athletic fields, a 50,000 watt NPR affiliated Public Radio Station The Night (90.5 FM), more than 75 computer labs and 3,500 networked computers, and the independently operated Monmouth Museum, which offers changing exhibitions and educational programs on art, science, nature, and cultural history. The College is home to a fully certified and accredited Police Department and is also known to be the State s safest college. The College prides itself on its engagement with and service to the community, providing continuing education and lifelong learning for Monmouth County residents and employers through a wide range of workforce, professional development, and personal enrichment courses and programs. The Continuing and Professional Studies division, which served more than 40,000 county residents in FY17, includes a Holocaust, Genocide and Human Rights Education Center, a Small Business Development Center, and a Displaced Homemakers Program. The Brookdale Community College Foundation is a 501(c)3 affiliated organization that raises private funds for scholarships and grants, enhancing the College s commitment to access and affordability. The Foundation is governed by a volunteer Board comprised of local business and community leaders and has more than $6.8 million in net assets. As of fall 2017, Brookdale Community College s total institutional enrollment was 12,790, with 52% women and nearly 46.5% full time students. As expected of a county college, 99% of Brookdale s student population are in-state residents and the majority are residents of Monmouth County. The average class size is 20. Students applaud the welcoming environment and the emphasis on both academic rigor and student success.

4 The College is committed to an inclusive environment. Our student body is 29.6% racially diverse with a growing population of Hispanic students. We strive to have our full-time employee population reflect the diversity of our student body, through recruitment and retention efforts. Through a wide range of activities and initiatives across the campus, the College works to achieve its commitment to cultural, age, belief, and identity diversity in the classroom, the workplace and the entire College environment. Brookdale supports student activities and encourages student engagement through a variety of clubs and organizations. Each club and/or organization caters to students interests and is supervised by a College staff advisor. Financial aid is offered in the form of grants, loans, work-study, and student help positions. Brookdale offers the following degrees: Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, Associate in Fine Arts, and Associate in Applied Science in addition to Academic Credit Certificates and Academic Credit Certificates of Achievement. The A.A., A.S., and A.F.A. programs are designed to prepare students who hope to transfer to a four-year institution. The 75 Associate Degree options feature a broad range of academic programs including Accounting, Communication Media, Culinary Arts, Digital Animation and 3-D Design, Fashion Merchandising, Humanities, Nursing, and Social Sciences. Brookdale offers expanded access to post-associate degree learning at the baccalaureate and graduate levels through onsite university partnerships with Georgian Court, New Jersey City University, and Rutgers as well as joint admissions agreements with numerous other colleges and universities. Many of Brookdale s students take advantage of advanced degree opportunities provided through these collaborations. In addition to our university partnerships, Brookdale has become a state leader in the number of early college high school programs it offers. In the fall 2018, there will be eleven (11) programs in place. The Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools accredits the institution. Over the past two years, Brookdale conducted a self-assessment and prepared comprehensive documentation in anticipation of our decennial review scheduled in early March, Brookdale is also certified by the State of New Jersey and the U.S. Department of Education. Specialized accreditation, certification, or approval is also provided by the following organizations: ACEN, COARC, JRCERT, ABA, NATEF, ACFEF, CAHIIM, and the Council for Standards in Human Service. In athletics, the Brookdale Jersey Blues offer intercollegiate teams and intramural activities. Brookdale proudly competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and the Garden State Athletic Conference-Community College League of New Jersey and has won national championships in several sports. Intercollegiate teams include baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross-country, lacrosse, soccer, softball, and tennis. Brookdale is a unionized environment with five employee associations.

BACKGROUND Dr. Maureen Murphy held the position of President at Brookdale Community College from July 1, 2012 through June 30, During her tenure, Dr. Murphy fostered the development of four early college high school programs and was instrumental in pursuing similar programs with other school districts. She also realigned the College in the face of budget constraints. When Dr. Murphy resigned to accept another presidency, the Board appointed Dr. David Stout to the position of Interim President. Dr. Stout has held numerous positions at the College; prior to his appointment to Interim President, he was Vice President, Student Success. Brookdale is considered a community college leader in New Jersey and enjoys a strongly positive reputation and a rich history of excellence and innovation. It prides itself on a dedicated faculty and staff, a culture of assessment, expanding distance education, and partnerships with colleges and universities to facilitate baccalaureate and graduate degrees for our students. We are also experiencing rapid partnership growth with local high schools to establish innovative college-level opportunities for high school students. Brookdale is one of only 10 colleges in the country to be a recent recipient of a Title III grant. The grant will provide the resources to fund improvements to online and hybrid courses, to implement new, compressed academic schedules, and to fund a new technology-based student relations system targeted to enhance retention and completion rates. The community and the county take pride in their only public college. The President is the chief executive officer of the college and reports directly to the Board of Trustees of Brookdale Community College. 6 EXPECTATIONS FISCAL LEADERSHIP: Maximize the College s budget and ensure financial integrity. Identify new revenue generating activities/partnerships and other means by which the College will rebuild its budget reserves and provide for operating/infrastructure needs as traditional sources of funding continue to diminish. ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP: Ensure that academic programs meet the highest academic standards, are accessible, and will promote student success and academic integrity. Promote and expand partnerships. Increase enrollment through innovative initiatives, capturing new student populations. Positively impact retention, completion, and achievement gaps. Ensure implementation of an academic strategic plan and assure that all other planning supports it. Increase the engagement of adjuncts in academic operations to ensure academic rigor and consistency of quality. Direct review of the curriculum and course delivery options to ensure relevance to student needs. FUNDING ADVOCACY: Together with the Board, creatively seek public and private funding sources to augment the College budget, including grants, Foundation initiatives, donor development, and legislative support for community colleges. STUDENT SERVICES LEADERSHIP: Influence changes in student support to meet the needs of a changing student population, including part-time and non-traditional students. Create a culture that supports student success as the top priority for all employees. MANAGERIAL LEADERSHIP: Through collaboration with the Board, chart the near term and strategic goals of the College, ensure they are aligned with the mission of the College, and provide a clear pathway for their achievement. Develop and recommend appropriate policies for Board approval. Develop a culture of continual assessment and renewal. Provide stable leadership. COMMUNITY COMMITMENT: Support the delivery of comprehensive and dynamic business and community development that supports the economic development of Monmouth County. Cultivate workforce development to rebuild the county s middle class. COLLEGIAL CONSULTATION: Foster a culture of respect, collaboration, and cooperation among all internal constituencies; incorporate the governance process into the College s decision making model; support and promote the value of diversity and inclusion throughout the College; support development and learning to maximize the potential of the College s human resources. Engender trust among all stakeholders. COLLEGE ADVOCACY: Promote and enhance the institution and higher education as a whole by personally establishing and maintaining cooperative relationships with external constituencies including the community at large, governmental agencies, local leaders, and the media. Support the College s brand by highlighting its many strengths through effective marketing and personal relationship-building.

7 QUALIFICATIONS The successful candidate will have either an earned doctorate with a record of success at a high level in an academic institution or will be an outstanding, proven leader with appropriate credentials and a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible leadership, at least 5 years of which must be at an executive or equivalent level. Prior administrative experience is desirable as is teaching experience at the postsecondary level. The Board of Trustees requires a president who is an ethical, visionary, and a collaborative leader who is passionate about the Brookdale mission, a relationship builder, and adept at navigating the peculiarities of academia in a unionized environment. The president will be prepared to lead this outstanding multi-campus institution into the future. Experience to be considered will include, but is not limited to, higher education, leadership skills, financial management, fundraising, and community relations. Internally, he or she will be a proven effective team builder who fosters a culture of trust, innovation, and success across all facets of an organization; and externally will promote an understanding of and financial support for Brookdale Community College in Monmouth County, New Jersey, regionally and nationally. Familiarity with New Jersey as a whole, and Monmouth County in particular, would be an asset for the success of a candidate. The ideal candidate must demonstrate commitment to collegial leadership and governance and have managerial experience in a unionized environment.
