3 Education Abroad Activity at OSU Overall and by College Key observations: HEADCOUNT AND PERCENTAGES BY COLLEGE: Liberal Arts majors were most represented in education abroad by headcount = 131 (Among all Colleges: 8-131), whereas Forestry had the highest percentage of students going abroad = 3.9% (Among all Colleges: 0.8% - 3.9%). PROGRAM TYPES: Half of all program participation was with a one-way study abroad Program Provider. Nearly one-quarter (24%) of all program participation was with an OSU Faculty-led program, 14% with Reciprocal Exchange programs and 12% with International Internships. REGIONAL DESTINATION: Over half of all participation was to Europe, one-quarter to Latin America & Caribbean, and only 1 to Asia. Oceania and Sub-Sahara Africa had 5% and 4% of the participation respectively. TIME OF YEAR: The vast majority of OSU students went abroad either during Summer or Fall term (78%). Only 15% went abroad either Winter and/or Spring. LENGTH OF PROGRAM: One-third of all education abroad participants went abroad for one quarter. Just over one-quarter went abroad for only 4-8 weeks. Another 2 went abroad for one semester or two quarters. Only 3% went abroad an entire academic year. CREDIT LOAD: Nearly two-thirds of all education abroad participants earned 12 or more credits while abroad and only 12% earned less than 6 credits. COST OF PROGRAMS: Nearly one-third of all education abroad programs utilized by OSU students were estimated to cost the same or less as compared to attending OSU. About onethird of all education abroad participants paid up to $3,000 more compared to studying at OSU. The remaining one-third of participants paid between $3,001 and $9,000+ more as compared to attending OSU. STUDENT DEMOGRAPHICS: o First Generation and Pell Eligible were well represented in education abroad and only had gaps of 3 to 4.4% compared to the overall student population. o Ethnicity/ Race data showed a disproportionate percentage of Caucasian representation in education abroad (> 1 compared to overall population) and slight underrepresentation across other categories with the exception of African-American which was 2.4% higher compared to overall representation. o Gender: Similar to national data (35:65), male/female participation ratio at OSU is 32:68 o Class Standing: The majority (41%) of all participants were Seniors, one-third were Juniors, and approximately one-fourth of all participants were Sophomores or Freshmen.

21 International Degree During the School, 24 undergraduates students who have a secondary major in the International Degree participated in education abroad programs. Of the 74 students enrolled in the International Degree Program (as of ), 24 participated in education abroad programs during , resulting in 32.4% of all International Degree students earning credit abroad. 22 Education Abroad Activity Profiles Primer / Glossary of Terms During summer 2015, with the assistance of a PROMISE Intern, OSU GO created a series of profiles to illustrate education abroad activity during based on program characteristics and student demographics. The data focuses on undergraduate students who earned credit abroad through OSU GO. Profiles exist for eight colleges and are based on students primary and secondary majors: Agricultural Sciences; Business; Earth, Ocean & Atmospheric Sciences; Engineering; Forestry; Liberal Arts; Public Health & Human Sciences and Science along with overall data. Profiles have also been created for Education, International Degree, and University Honors College double degrees. A brief overview of primary and secondary major and minor world language activity is also included. For questions regarding the data, reports or explanations, contact Julie.walkin@oregonstate.edu. Program Types For the purposes of the Education Abroad Activity by College project, we have created eight (8) categories that are based on how a program is administered and to which institution students pay tuition. The eight categories are: Campus-wide Exchange, Collegebased Exchange, Faculty-led, Co-Provider, IE3 Global (study abroad), College-based Study Abroad, International Internship and Directed Study. Reciprocal Exchange Reciprocal Exchange programs are based on an agreement with a partner institution or consortium. OSU students continue to pay resident or non-resident tuition (and sometimes fees) to OSU while enrolling at a partner institution. OSU, in return, hosts an equal number of students from the partner institution whose students continue to pay tuition (and possibly fees) to their home institution. Some exchange partnerships are campus-wide (open to all students) and some are College or Department specific. OSU has over 80 partner institutions in nearly 30 countries. Over 25 of those partnerships represent the GE3 Exchanges with the College of Engineering. The College of Business has 15 exchange partners. For the Education Abroad Activity Profiles project, there are two types of exchange programs, those that are managed through OSU GO, Campus-wide Exchange and those that are managed through the College, College-based Exchange. Faculty-led Courses are developed, led and taught by OSU faculty. In most instances, students enroll with OSU Summer/Intersession, pay resident tuition rate and no on-campus fees. Faculty-led programs may also contract with an education abroad co-provider such as CIEE or GEO. OSU currently has about twenty such programs that occur annually, biannually, or sometimes only once. Most are short-term (2 to 4 weeks) and occur during the summer or winter break while others take place during fall or winter quarter. See attachment for a list of current programs. Co-Provider OSU GO has an approved portfolio of over 100 program offerings with approximately ten education abroad co-providers that offer courses through their study centers or a local university, or that may be led by an OSU faculty-member but administered by IE3 Global. Students pay a program fee to the provider that includes tuition and fees. Co-providers approved by OSU include: API Academic Programs International CIEE Council for International Educational Exchange GEO (formerly AHA) Global Education Oregon IE3 Global (based at OSU; incl. faculty-led, exchange, and one-way study abroad type programs) IFSA-Butler INTO-China SAS - Semester at Sea SEA Semester SFS School for Field Studies SIT School for International Training College-based Study Abroad Occasionally, a College or School identifies a program that is uniquely beneficial for their students that does not involve reciprocal exchange. These are called College-based Study Abroad programs whereby students enroll in and pay tuition to the approved partner institution. For the Activity by College project, the category Other College-based Program represents College-based exchange or study abroad programs that are based in a college other than the college being highlighted.

23 IE3 Global Study Abroad IE3 Global (formerly OUS International Programs) is an OSU based consortium of 18 universities and colleges throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond. IE3 Global functions as a self-supporting co-provider with a special relationship to OSU. In addition to internships, IE3 Global administers programs that are a type of exchange, faculty-led or study abroad. For the purposes of the Education Abroad Activity project, we are combining these programs into one category IE3 Global Study Abroad. International Internship Through IE3 Global, students select from over 100 internships in over 50 countries. Students pay a program fee, earn credit and enroll for 10 weeks or more. This category also includes other students on independently arranged internships. Directed Study An Independently arranged study or research project abroad. Approval can be gained by submitting an OSU GO petition form endorsed by an OSU faculty member. Intersession programs are tied to the term that follows, eg. Short-term program occurring in September count as Fall term. Activity by Program Length This pie chart is fairly self-explanatory. One item to note is that short-term programs are often ineligible for external education abroad scholarships, eg. the Gilman scholarship requires a minimum four week program. Activity by Credits Enrolled This pie chart is based on number of credits enrolled with OSU, in the case of faculty-led programs or as placeholder credits when students enroll at a partner institution. For students enrolling in semester-length programs, students typically earn credits, depending on whether they are abroad for one or two quarters. The credit breakdown is based on minimum requirements for 5, 75% or 10 disbursement of financial aid. Activity by Cost Compared to OSU This pie chart is based on overall program cost estimates and how they compare to what a student would normally pay for one term at OSU, either as a resident or non-resident student. Student Demographics This section examines representation across the entire college as of and by all education abroad participants during based on primary and secondary majors. Other Useful Terms International Program Consultant (IPC) IPCs are based in the Office of Global Opportunities and collaborate directly with colleges and departments to develop strategic planning, coordination and management for all outbound international programming and study abroad opportunities in support of the OSU strategic internationalization plan.
