1 1 A Brief History Southern University College (also known as Southern UC) was previously known as Southern College, was established in 1990; it is the first non-profit higher education institute in Malaysia. The establishment of the Southern UC was to provide an educational channel at home for high school graduates when they were unable to further studies in foreign countries. Foon Yew Advanced Studies Programme was setting up in 1975, where later on the Foon Yew Board of Directors made application to the Ministry of Education for setting up Foon Yew College on the foundation of this programme. With the persistence and efforts of the Chinese community, Southern College was finally approved by the Ministry of Education and established in Through twenty-two years of management and efforts, the Ministry of Higher Education has finally approved Southern College to upgrade to Southern University College. Southern University College is located at Skudai area, Johor Bahru Malaysia, which is within the Iskandar Malaysia Economic Zone. The campus is about 25 acres, donated by the philanthropist Mr. Seow Wan Heong. Following the development of Iskandar Malaysia Economic Zone, Southern UC will be one of the important educational institutes of Malaysia, and slowly develop as an international educational institute. The campus of Southern UC is a scenic spot and rich with the Chinese s tradition color and multicultural atmosphere, showing the spirit of 1Malaysia. There are 5 Faculties in Southern UC at the moment, which are Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Business and Management, Faculty of Art and Design, Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, and Faculty of Chinese Medicine. Southern UC is planning to set up Faculty of Education and Institute of Graduate Studies and Research (IGSR) in the near future, which as the preparation of the UC to become an International University. 2 2 Our Vision and College Code Our Vision and College Code In its new university vision, Southern University College hopes to become the educational paradigm for the East and West in order to establish an educational reputation and to advance in teaching, learning and research, so as to move towards becoming an integrated university, a university that is able to advance in tandem with other local and foreign universities. Our Motto Self-Renewal, Virtue, Nature was extracted from the two trigrams Qian and Kun of the Yi Jing; Qian relates to The steadiness of the sky which depends on its sound moving; a good man should always learn from it and self-renew himself. The Kun comes from The earth is moderate, a good man should always learn from it and bear all things with his high morals. This is the highest level of the combination of universe and mankind in Chinese culture. The motto Self-renewal also means to continue the spirit of Nanyang University, in the hope of providing a unique university education. Our motto was launched at the 15th college anniversary in 2005, with the encouragement of all the students to learn from the universe, to work hard in their studies and moral cultivation, and to treasure the time and keep forging ahead. 8 5 Student Activities, Club & Hostel Life Colourful University s Life The wide variety of extra-curricular activities enables the students to exert their initiative through interaction. They are given a chance to learn more about interpersonal skills and capability build up.

9 5.1 Hostel Life The Student Residence provides affordable, convenient and comfortable accommodation for the students of Southern University College. It is also aims at nurturing a sharing community and building positive character traits such as independence and self-discipline through the process of residence life. Furthermore, students get to enjoy a delightful and harmonious college experience. A Boarding Self-Regulatory Committee has been established to promote responsible self-governance and to achieve the objective of self management among the residents. There are some interesting activities that have been organized to enhance this interaction. 1. Johor Bahru One Day Trip This is one day tour that is held in each semester. This tour brings new residents to the scenic and cultural spots in Johor Bahru. The purpose is to help new residents to explore the off campus environment and adapt to their current life. 2. Barbeque Parties This is to enhance interaction and friendship between the old and new residents. The activities of the night include performances by different societies, games, lucky draw and others. 3. Mid Autumn Festival Celebrations It is to provide an opportunity for non-local residents to experience the warmth of a traditional reunion festival. There are spectacular activities such as lantern riddles, cultural performances and lantern processions.

10 6 Application Procedure Students who wish to enroll in Southern University College need to complete the Application Form and submit it together with the following documents and fees: Application Fees + Registration Fees (Non-refundable), a total of RM7, x Passport-size Coloured photograph (Blue Colour Background) 1 x Photocopy of Certified School Leaving Certificated. 1 x Photocopy of Certified High School Result / College Result 1 x Pre-Medical Check up Report (Original Copy) 1 x Photocopy of Passport (All pages including blank pages) 1 x Duly completed Application Form and Signed 1 x Accommodation Application Form (If applicable) Upon receiving the above documents and application fees, the university college will process it within 14 working days. All successful applicants will receive the Scanned copy of the Offer Letter by . Southern University College will submit all the relevant documents to EMGS* to process Visa Approval Letter. This process will take about Days. The student will be kept updated on the status throughout the application process and can contact the University for further clarifications. Southern University College will send the Original Visa Approval Letter by or courier to the student who then can apply a visa to enter Malaysia. The student have to inform the university college of their travel plan AT LEAST SEVEN (7) WORKING DAYS before departure. Note: The University College will not be held responsible for any problems that may arise if the above instruction is not complied. The student must be ready with the following documents once he / she arrives at the airport: 1. Passport (Must be valid for at least 12 months before expiry); 2. Original copy of Visa Approval Letter or Valid Entry Visa. Important Note: The Malaysian Immigration Office WILL NOT release the student without the presence of the university college reprentative to identify and acknowledge the student. Upon arrival in Malaysia, students are required to settle the First Year Payment of Tuition fees and undergo complete medical screening, in any EMGS appointed clinics, within 7 working days from the date of entry.
