2 What is UCAS? UCAS is the organisation responsible for connecting people to UK higher education. You can apply for up to five different courses in the UK with one application done online University and College Admissions Service Applications are made online at 16/06/2016

3 The role of UCAS UCAS processes applications for full-time courses at higher education providers in the UK. We guide students through the whole process, providing valuable information and supporting services for applicants and their parents.

5 Key features of the UCAS Undergraduate scheme One application per admissions cycle. Application fee 24 / 13. Maximum five choices (some restrictions). Simultaneous consideration. Offers are made on PREDICTIONS. Pupils are guaranteed a place IF they get the required grades

8 Types of courses available Pick the course to suits you... Single: study one subject Joint honours degree: divide your time between two subjects.. Combined honours programme: study between two to four subjects, specialising in just two subjects in years two and three. Sandwich courses: vocational courses, often involve one year in industry. Foundation year (year 0): if you don t have the right qualifications some universities offer this to help students prepare and enter higher education. 16/06/2016

13 The personal statement The Personal Statement is a very important part of the application process for UK universities The only section your son or daughter has control over. Their only chance to market themselves individually. One personal statement for all choices. Max. 4,000 characters, 47 lines Min. 1,000 characters No spelling/grammar check No formatting

16 Decisions and replies Provider decisions: Unsuccessful Unconditional offer INANCE = Once all decisions are received, they can hold up to two offers: One as their firm choice One as their insurance choice (if they want to) All other offers are declined Track will show their reply date. FIRM = where you really want to go Conditional offer qualifications and achievements and/or UCAS Tariff points

17 Other options Extra 24 Feb 4 July If all five choices have been used and they have no offers/rejected all offers. Clearing from early-july If there are no offers, or have applied after 30 June deadline. Adjustment (from A level results day) If they ve gained better results than the conditional offer they hold, they could apply for a different course or university.

19 Support We support your son/daughter through the whole process of application. We will have weekly lessons on applying to university, making choices and writing personal statements. A successful application requires a student to be in control of their own application, but supported from home and by the school. Support Advice and guidance 16/06/2016

20 How can you support the application process? Use the parents/guardians section of the UCAS website/parent Guide publication and sign up for the newsletter. All contact is made directly with your son/daughter NOT THROUGH THE SCHOOL. Make sure they read everything carefully that is sent to them. Support your son/daughter s management of their application.
