3 Coordinator s Corner Danika Talbert, Pediatric Coordinator Danika recently completed the Training Administrators for Graduate Medical Education (TAGME) certification Page 3 PEDIATRIC RESIDENCY AT SACRED HEART HEALTHSYSTEM, PENSACOLA Q: What is the mission of TAGME? A: The National Board for Certification of TAGME has been created to establish standards for the profession, to acknowledge the expertise needed to successfully manage graduate medical education (GME) programs, and to recognize those training program administrators who have achieved competence in all fields related to their profession. Q: What would you consider to be the main requirements an individual must have in order to apply for certification? A: Knowledge in the following content areas: Academic Curriculum; Duty Hours Competencies - how they relate to your clinical specialty within its program requirements Procedure/Case Logs; Evaluations ACGME / AOA Policies and Procedures Resident Recruitment Q: What are some of your most memorable professional development experiences to date? A: I have gained the most knowledge from attending the Association of Pediatric Program Directors Conferences. These conferences have coordinator-specific workshops, which not only allow for pediatric coordinators to share their tips and tricks, but also allows networking opportunities. It s great to know that you are not alone! Q: Are there many steps in the certification process? A: Applicants need at least three continuous years in the same ACGMEor AOA- accredited GME clinical specialty. Applicants must accumulate a total of 10 hours of Educational Credits (ECs) through attendance at one national, regional, state, or institutional meeting within the past three years. This meeting focus must be GME. Webinars, podcasts, and online modules may provide for a maximum of five EC's towards the total credit. Applicants must demonstrate a minimum of two personal professional development experiences within the past three years, including oral/poster presentations, participation and/or leadership in national organizations within the profession and in GME committees, and departmental presentations such as orientation and in-service training sessions on program procedures for attendings and/or residents. Q: Can you briefly describe the exam process(es)? A: There are no study guides or textbooks. Knowledge of the day-to-day management of a residency program is a major part of preparation for certification. There are two distinct parts of the certification process, the work effort assessment tool (WET) and the monitored assessment tool (MAT). The WET is designed to assess knowledge of your residency training program and how it functions, as well as your ability to find and access information relative to GME. The MAT is designed to assess your knowledge of the ACGME/AOA requirements for successful maintenance of a residency training program. Q: Is there maintenance of certification involved? A: Certification is valid for five years, including the year of certification. Pediatric Faculty Published "Clusters of Adolescent and Young Adult Thyroid Cancer in Florida Counties," by Drs. Raid W. Amin and James Burns has been accepted for publication in BioMed Research Internation.

4 A Message from the DIO Dr. Joan Younger Meek Upon completion of another academic year in graduate medical education (GME), we celebrate the accomplishments of our graduating residents and look forward to the next phase of their careers in medicine. Some will be pursuing additional subspecialty fellowship training, while others will make the transition to private practice or hospital-based employment. We know that each one will serve their patients and communities well and be excellent representatives of our FSU College of Medicine residency programs. We are especially pleased that some will be staying in their local communities and joining our teaching faculty. Our FSU Family Medicine Residency Program at Lee Memorial Health System (LMHS) in Fort Myers began training upper-level residents this spring. We all share their excitement as years of preparation came to fruition and the inaugural graduate medical education program began at Lee Memorial. LMHS administration and staff have shown great support for the program, and the local community is excited about training these physicians. We applaud the pioneer spirit of those residents who chose to transfer to the program to complete their training and the incoming interns who matched with the program. I want to recognize Danika Talbert, residency coordinator for the FSU Pediatric Program at Sacred Heart Health System (SHHS) in Pensacola, for achieving certification as a resident coordinator. This certification recognizes a high level of knowledge, leadership, and achievement in the coordinator role. Danika now proudly displays her C-TAGME, Certification as a Training Administrator of GME. We were pleased to recognize Danika s certification during the June graduation ceremony. I would like to welcome Dr. Wade Douglas to our GME Division. Dr. Douglas is the inaugural General Surgery Program Dr. Wade Douglas Director for the FSU College of Medicine Program at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare. Dr. Douglas most recently served as the General Surgery Program Director at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University. He completed his undergraduate degree at Florida A&M in Tallahassee and received his medical degree from the University of Florida, having participated in the PIMS Program at Florida State University. Dr. Douglas completed his surgical internship at the UF College of Medicine and surgical residency at the Morehouse School of Medicine and Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. He completed fellowships in head and neck surgery and surgical oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY. We look forward to the leadership that Dr. Douglas will bring to the developing general surgery residency program. One of his first tasks will be the preparation of the new program application. We hope you enjoy reading about our GME programs in this edition. Family Medicine Dr. Christy Cavanagh Page 4 LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, FT. MYERS Dr. Christy Cavanagh was recognized by the Florida Academy of Family Physicians (FAFP) for graduating from the Karl M. Altenburger, M.D. Physician Leadership Academy class through the Florida Medical Association. The Physician Leadership Academy is a 10-month program designed to give doctors ages 45 and under the skills they need to succeed within business, organized medicine, medical staffs, group practices and the public policy arena. Dr. Cavanagh serves on the FAFP Board of Directors and has shared a great deal of what she has learned with our residents and faculty. Dr. Cavanagh, Dr. Klossner, Ryan Hire, Pharm Resident, Amy Skiff, Pharm D., Dr. Charles Arnold and Dr. Elizabeth Midney Here s one for the history books! 5 Page 5 OB-GYN Recruitment Activity Family Medicine Residents Visit FSU Our Family Medicine Residents had a great visit at the College of Medicine s main campus this July. They met with faculty, toured the facilities, had a session with Dr. Joan Meek, Designated Institutional Official, and had lunch at the University Club at the FSU Football Stadium. The interns were able to participate in several clinical scenarios and practice some Objective Structured Clinical Exams (OSCEs) in the Clinical Simulation Center to help us evaluate their skills. A special thanks to Debra Danforth, Associate Professor, Director, Charlotte E. Maguire, M.D. and TMH Clinical Learning Center, and staff. During resident recruitment visits, Tinker Toy team-building exercises were done during downtime on interview days. The structure had to be at least six inches tall and be mobile, but applicants also had to make sure the structure could hold 6 pounds (three 2-pound weights were used). They had a bit of a challenge, but they enjoyed it. Hands-on Lab Family Medicine residents came up from Fort Myers to participate in OSCEs at College of Medicine. OB/GYN Residents participated in a hands-on Obstetrical Hemorrhage Lab taught by Dr. Julie DeCesare. 7 OB-GYN Director Recognized for Mentorship Page 7 In the fast-paced world of medicine, mentorship is difficult to establish and maintain. One FSU OB-GYN physician, however, overcame this obstacle to benefit a new mother facing the challenges of the profession. Once Julie DeCesare, M.D., director of the OB-GYN residency program, learned of the challenges that colleague Dr. Angela Stoehr was facing, she stepped in. I got to know Dr. Stoehr through the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) District XII activities, as she is the Junior Fellow Vice Chair, said DeCesare. We really connected, and she asked if she could text or call me for career advice. Our relationship took off from there, and I helped facilitate a big professional career move for her. The resulting relationship played such a significant role in Stoehr s life that she nominated DeCesare for the ACOG 2014 Mentor of the Year award for District XII (Florida). DeCesare, clinical associate professor at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, received the award, along with one other District XII winner. The award is designed for an ACOG Fellow, including a teacher of residents, who has actively mentored a young physician or a junior fellow. Stoehr describes the positive impression DeCesare made when they met. We happened to be sitting next to each other during the meetings, said Stoehr, who now resides in Iowa as an OB-GYN generalist at the Eastern Iowa Health Center. I had a 10-week-old that I was nursing during the meetings, and she made me feel comfortable with my choice to do that. DeCesare continued to guide Stoehr, faculty member for the Cedar Rapids Medical Education Foundation Family Practice Residency, as she navigated the more challenging times in her career, particularly those unique to women. She encouraged me to read Lean In, by Sheryl Sandberg, said Stoehr. We kept in touch and spoke about the book and women in leadership roles several times. DeCesare provided advice as Stoehr balanced her personal and professional lives. She helped me know when it was time to let go during stressful times and the best way to handle things, said Stoehr. After Stoehr relocated from Florida to Iowa, DeCesare s impact stretched across state lines as she connected Stoehr to a colleague there. I have a good friend in Iowa, and I facilitated an introduction so that Angie would have another mentor close by, said DeCesare. Stoehr s gratitude for DeCesare s role in her life is shared by many faculty members in the College of Medicine who value the importance of mentorship, including Dean John Fogarty, M.D. There is nothing more important than trying to improve the skills of younger faculty and to bring them along to create the next generation of excellent teachers, said Fogarty. Clearly DeCesare was recognized for being extraordinary in this regard. This is a high honor and deeply appreciated. DeCesare explains that being a mentor is just a part of who she is. I am very honored to be recognized. I really don t feel that I did anything very special for Angie; I really just did what comes naturally. Dr. Peterson shares information about the project. OB-GYN Faculty Receive Award Dr. Joseph Peterson, Associate Professor/Assistant Program Director, and Dr. Sharon Seidel, Assistant Professor, have been awarded the 2014 Assocication of Professors for Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO) Excellence Award for their presentation, Use of ABOG Pearls of Excellence for Formulation of Case of the Day format questions on a mock oral exam. The poster detailed the process used in creation and administration of, as well as resident response to, the mock oral board exam, which is given by Drs. Peterson and Seidel each year. Their poster was one of many highly ranked national abstracts and posters chosen by APGO, Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) and Excellence reviewers for a poster presentation at the CREOG & APGO Annual Meeting. Dr. Peterson was able to attend and present the poster at the meeting. Reviewers announced the award at the CREOG & APGO Awards Luncheon in late February. Congratulations, Drs. Peterson and Seidel on your hard work.

8 Kudos, Family Medicine JULY 2014 Drs. Christy Cavanagh, James Toldi, and Kristin Miller did a terrific job representing our program at the AAFP National Conference in Kansas City. Dr. Cavanagh made these comments regarding the two residents. They both kept up high energy and reached out to at least 100 medical students to share why they love being residents at the FSU FMRP at LMHS. And Kristin is a celebrity in our midst. We had numerous students stop by and say they recognized her from advertising and lectures as the poster child for her medical school. We are off to a great start in the recruiting season as a result of their efforts! Dr. Lucia Huffman made a very positive impression on one of our community preceptors serving on the Quality and Peer Review Committee. He states, I was impressed with her maturity, preparation, and attention to detail. Glad to have her as a colleague, and look forward to further working with your residents in the near future. We are thrilled to receive these positive comments from community physicians and leaders! Lucia, thanks for representing our program so well! Resident Sherry Farag, M.D., did a great job representing our residency program at the FAFP resident council. She even got a big round of applause for our accomplishments thus far. Drs. Roy Klossner and Denise Drago, M.D. (LGP Pediatrics), spent a great deal of time and effort coming up with a schedule for our outpatient pediatrics rotation that will work for everyone. Roy and Denise, thank you so much for your work, leadership, and patience during this process! Nicole Steinkohl, Rochelle Lopez, Dr. Lucia Huffman and Dr. Julia Fashner are commended for successfully kicking off the first weekend of Saturday office hours. Although we had several cancellations, the four patients treated were very pleased. Thank you so much for your help in making this new service available to our FM patients! Dr. Sherry Farag did well taking the initiative to suggest having a single pager for the ER and LMHS staff to contact the inpatient medicine service residents. Jerry Kirk, nurse manager, was able to take this idea and set up the pager last week. The FM program has already heard lots of compliments about how much easier the staff can contact us with the new pager. Sherry, thanks for being a great medicine chief and suggesting this idea! He was born Jan. 26 and weighed 7 pounds, 8.8 ounces. Pediatric Resident Dr. Edwin Mwakalindile and wife also had a boy, Ikusaja (which means, he's a blessing ). Ikusaja Mwakalindile was born on Feb. 28 and weighed 6 pounds, 12 ounces.
