2 Welcome to Chancellor Beverly A. Kopper, Ph.D. On behalf of the Warhawk family, I would like to welcome all of you to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Many thanks and congratulations to our Black Student Union for hosting this national conference. I wish you a productive weekend ahead as you address the achievement and professional development of African-American students. At, diversity is central to our mission. In every college and department, our faculty and staff are dedicated to opening the doors of opportunity for everyone. As we strive to increase our retention and graduation rates, has created several award-winning and innovative programs that reflect this dedication: - The Research Apprenticeship Program, and the King/Chavez Scholars and McNair Scholars programs immerse students in undergraduate research ranging from the arts to the sciences. - Science Boot Camp has become a national model in teaching students what it s like to work in a laboratory, how to take good notes, access campus resources, and improve writing and oral communication skills. - Wheels to Whitewater brings multicultural high school students to campus to learn about the admissions process, financial aid, academic support and advising, and participate in an interactive panel composed of current students from groups such as the Black Student Union. - The Future Teacher Program, Summer Business Institute and Pathway for Success program help multicultural students transition to college and set them on a course for academic achievement. We all know the power of having mentors who care deeply about our success and engage us both inside and out of the classroom. I m proud that we have created an exceptional learning environment at where those relationships thrive. Roger Yin is a Professor of Information Technology in the College of Business and Economics at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater,. Roger grew up in Taipei city and earned a B.E. in Environmental Engineering from National Chung-Hsin University in Taiwan. He holds both an M.S. and Ph.D. in Instructional Systems Technology from Indiana University, Bloomington. Dr. Yin was a Visiting Teaching Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in the summers of 2000 and Roger has been actively involved in information technology activities for more than 20 years including work as Developer, Manager, Consultant, and Educator. Dr. Yin has published more than 35 refereed journal articles and presented more than 50 papers in national and international conference on and related to Information Technology. He has had extensive experience educating multicultural students in states such as Wisconsin, Michigan, Virginia, and Delaware. D., CSAC, is a proud alumnus of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, completing the following degrees: BSE in Special Education (1992); MSE in School Psychology (1994); Post-Master s Certification in School Psychology (1995). She also earned a Psy.D. from the Wisconsin School of Professional Psychology (2008). Dr. Prather is a clinical psychologist with the U.S. Department of State. Her volunteerism as a professional in counseling ministry, healthcare psychological outreach, and family support has complemented public service activities as a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Her philanthropy is highlighted by the endowment of the Jabez Scholarship and T. Marie Prather Scholarship at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Dr. Prather was recognized as the Outstanding Young Alumna at the University of Wisconsin- Whitewater in Marilyn M. Irving, Ph.D., is a Professor of Science Education and the Associate Dean for Research and Sponsored Programs for the School of Education at Howard University in Washington, DC. Dr. Irving s diverse background and commitment to ensure excellence and equity for all children is demonstrated through her service oriented leadership style. For over 21 years she served as principal/co-principal investigator to facilitate and direct an array of projects funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institutes of Health, General Electric and the U.S. Department of Education to increase the number of underrepresented groups interested in pursuing science as a career. Dr. Irving is a contributor to the Smithsonian Science Education Center (SSEC) playbook for leaders in school districts throughout the country to increase the diversity of STEM teacher workforce. She currently serves on the SSEC Ad Hoc Advisory Group on Higher Education for the nation. In her spare time, she is a Volunteer Leader for Chicago Cares, Inc., Chicago s leading nonprofit service organization that has mobilized 500,000 volunteers to meet the city s most challenging needs and she also volunteers as a Mentor for imentor, Inc., imentor is an organization that harnesses the power of long-term, personal relationships to help students succeed. It partners with high schools in low-income communities, where a majority of students served will be first-generation college graduates. Frierson, Ph.D., is Associate Vice President, Dean of the Graduate School, and Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Florida (UF). He received his Bachelor s and Master s degree in Psychology and Educational Psychology, respectively, from Wayne State University; and his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Michigan State University. Before coming to UF Frierson was at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill from , where he was Professor of Educational Psychology and Director of the Research Education Support Program. Frierson s interests include: program evaluation; examining the effects of mentoring; increasing the number of individuals of color in doctoral programs, research careers, and public school teaching careers. Attorney Yolanda McGowan, graduated cum laude from the University of Wisconsin- Whitewater with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science and Public Relations. Subsequently, she completed her graduate education at the University of Wisconsin- Madison, obtaining a Juris Doctorate to practice law. Attorney McGowan has demonstrated leadership, innovation, management and motivational since college, helping to found organizations to meet community needs such as: TIFU Cultural Ensemble at UWW; and a Sickle Cell support group working with the Blood Center of SE Wisconsin on increasing blood marrow donations from racial/ethnic minority communities. Attorney McGowan has demonstrated professional versatility through utilizing a diverse and unique skill set to amass a demonstrated record of success in a variety of positions over a quarter of a century career. After beginning her my legal career in private practice, she has served as a civil litigator, criminal defense and family law attorney. Subsequently, she spent over a decade representing, protecting and defending the rights of individuals and representing companies such as American Family, Geico, and Allstate as well as other insurance companies and corporations. Attorney McGowan has also served as an Administrative Law Judge, providing over contested matters between social service agencies Nicole N. Bronson-Henley, Ph.D, holds a Ph.D. in Health Services from UCLA and an MBA from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Currently, she serves as assistant professor at California State University-San Bernardino. Previously, she worked for Los Angeles County and serves as a part-time faculty member in the Department of Public Health at California State University, Los Angeles. Her professional experience is in the fields of public health and education, where she has taught for over 15 years. Nicole is committed to the Each One, Teach One philosophy and believes that every community has the ability to grow stronger and more resilient when members pass on their skills and knowledge to others. To show her dedication in helping others succeed, she is currently endowing a scholarship for multicultural students at. She currently serves on the board of several academic and community organizations, both locally and out of state. 5 Closing Remarks: Eileen Hayes, Ph.D Dean of Arts & Communication Goldy Tre Brown, III, Ph.D, currently is an Assistant Professor of Instructional Leadership at Auburn University at Montgomery. He has authored several publications including A School s Tale: A Case study of an Elementary Principal s Practice that supports the Achievement of Low Income Students and Contributed to an Elementary School gaining Blue Ribbon Status. His research interests include evidenced-based practices that support the achievement of low resource students in Demographically diverse schools. Goldy is an educator with extensive experience in K-12. He received a PhD in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis from UW- Madison, M.A. in Educational Leadership and Administration form the Univ. of California-Riverside and a B.S.E. in secondary education from. He has over six years of experience as a middle school teacher and over eight years of experience as an elementary school principal in Wisconsin, Illinois, and California. 24

7 Saturday, November 18, 2017 University Center, Faculty Advisory Committee Ira Albert Rutherford, III., has been very fortunate to have had a wide variety of professional learning experiences and growth opportunities since graduating from Western Michigan University. He has been a Junior High School Teacher, Basketball Coach, Recreational Play Leader, University Professor, Licensed DJ, and served as a producer of a local television program. For twenty years Mr. Rutherford served as Superintendent of the Flint/Beecher Community Schools System and one year as the Interim Superintendent of the Flint Community Schools. In addition, he has served on numerous Boards while participating in several service organizations and programs. He has consistently pursued his interest in the struggle for Human Rights through music, writing and activism. Richard C. McGregory Jr., Ph.D., serves as Executive Director of Strategic Communication and Achievement Accountability for Robbinsdale Area Schools in New Hope, Minnesota. Previously, McGregory served as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Multicultural Affairs and Student Success as well as an adjunct lecturer of Economics at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. His work as a scholar/ practitioner has addressed educational and economic disparities as well as examined issues relative to the acquisition of human, social, and financial capital. She was an employee for Milwaukee Public Schools for 14 years where she taught second grade and served as a school building and district level administrator. She was a Student Achievement Supervisor and coordinated a five year-sixty five million dollar School Improvement Grant administered by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, TC got his start in comedy hosting talent and fashion shows for his former employer Maximus as well as local talent agencies throughout Wisconsin. When TC can take time away from his busy basketball schedule, he travels all over performing stand-up to include various venues such as The Improv Room (Dallas, TX), Improv Comedy (Charlotte, NC), several venues in Chicago, IL and of course The Comedy Café in his hometown of Milwaukee Wisconsin. Troy was raised in Milwaukee s vicious (now defunct) Westlawn Projects. Following a stellar high school basketball campaign, TC earned his Bachelor s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Master s degrees from National Louis University & Concordia University-Irvine, CA. TC began doing stand-up in Milwaukee as a hobby, but comedy soon grew into a passion as others began convincing him it was part of his calling in life. Also, he was able to share the stage with nationally known comics like Damon Williams. Troy DuSean TC Coleman resides in Dallas, TX. He states his greatest achievement in life comes from being an awesome father to his children. Their success is my success. TC grew up without any guidance and had to deal with issues no young man should have to ever deal with alone. 9 Saturday, November 18, :30pm University Center, Professionals on Parade Tejumola Teju Ologboni (Teju) is a Storyteller, Folklorist and Oral Historian. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Madison. He was awarded a Federal Foreign Language Fellowship to study African Languages at Indiana University Bloomington. As an educator, he taught African Literature, African American Literature, Creative Writing, and English in the Africology Department at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. He also taught at Marquette University. Teju comes from a long family tradition of storytellers. His mother and father, his grandmothers, one grandfather and a great-grandfather were storytellers. His storytelling has gained him an international reputation. He has travelled in Africa, Europe and Canada, Mexico and most of the states in the United States performing, conducting seminars and presenting workshops on subjects related to the world s African Peoples. He is a published author. In addition to his repertory of original stories and poems, Teju is an accomplished percussionist. This is Teju The Storyteller. I. She is a graduate of Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, FL and is currently pursuing her MBA at Cardinal Stritch University. Attending an HBCU is what sparked in her a strong passion for working with students of color, helping them to find and attain higher education and critical life skills that will afford them success. A Milwaukee native, Amanda worked in the private sector before finding her love and passion for higher education and serving students. Edward Williams Robinson, is in his last semester at Rock Valley Community College in Rockford, Illinois. He has already received his certificate in Marketing and will be receiving his Associates of Arts at the end of this semester to go on to Major in Education. He is the current President of the Black Student Union at Rock Valley College as well as a member of Trio. When not at school, he coaches football and is the JV Head Coach at West Middle School as well as an Assistant coach at Rockford Auburn High School. In his spare time he volunteers for Americorps at local community centers in disadvantage neighborhoods in Rockford to positively engage the youth. Woods research focuses on various aspects of hibernation, and he has studied yellowbellied marmots and woodchucks closely. He is also interested in physiology adaptations to extreme environments and enjoys giving students opportunities to work with and observe wild mammals. Before coming to HPU, Woods taught at the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater, Beloit College and Northwestern University. Dextra Hadnot, Dextra Hadnot joined AT&T Wisconsin in January 2001, and has worked with the company s External Affairs team for 14 years. As Director of Government Affairs, Dextra has responsibility for AT&T Wisconsin s local and state legislative policy issues for the eastern region of the state. Prior to joining the AT&T Wisconsin External Affairs team, Dextra worked for the City of Milwaukee as a lobbyist in the City s Department of Intergovernmental Relations. He previously worked as Legislative Assistant for the Milwaukee Common Council s 7 th Aldermanic District with the Mayor s office during the Norquist Administration. He is married with two children. Kelly McGregory, D.O., is a board-certified pediatrician working for North Memorial Health in Maple Grove, Minnesota. Previously, McGregory served as a pediatrician with Beloit (WI) Health Systems; Advocate Sherman Hospital (Elgin, IL); Wheaton Franciscan All Saints Hospital (Racine, WI); and Crusader Clinic (Rockford, IL). Prior to completing a pediatric residency at Advocate Children s Hospital (Park Ridge, IL), she completed a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree from Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California. A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (and a huge Philadelphia 76ers fan), McGregory completed a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Virginia and a M.S. in Biomedical Sciences from Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida. Toni Bush, is the newly appointed Director of Employee Health and Infection Control at PCC Community Wellness Center (PCC), a Federally Qualified Health Center that provides comprehensive medical, behavioral health and oral health care services at 11 locations within Chicago s medically underserved communities. In addition, Toni serves as the Clinic Administrator for a school-based community health center located at Steinmetz College Prep High School. In 2007, Toni began her professional career at PCC as a grant writer and was appointed Director of Development in She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Public Policy and Administration with a specialization in Health Care from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (2005) and Master of Public Health degree with an emphasis in Health Care Administration from Northern Illinois University (2007). 14 Dr. Brent Bilodeau serves as the Interim Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater. Brent received a BA from the University of California Irvine in psychology and his MA in college and university administration and PhD in higher, adult, and lifelong education from Michigan State University. He has served in university roles in residence life, student life/leadership, multicultural education, and LGBT student affairs. Brent has also served as a diversity trainer for the NCAA. His research interests and publications have included; social justice education, LGBT student identity development, college climate for transgender students, domestic/ international student diversity, internationalization, and higher education systems in global context. He is an adjunct instructor in the MA program in Higher Education Leadership. Brent s research on transgender college students has been recognized with a LGBT Knowledge Community Research Award from the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and the Scholar Activist Award from the American Educational Research Association. Gerald Kenney, is a distinguished resident of Beloit, Wisconsin who graduated from high school in 1963 as a three sport letterman; football, baseball and basketball. Niya S. Bealin, Psy. D., is currently employed as a School Psychologist with the Milwaukee Public School District. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin- Whitewater with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology (2004) and a Master of Science in Education (2006). She also earned a Psy.D. from the Wisconsin School of Professional Psychology (2017). She is a member of several organizations including Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the Wisconsin School Psychologists Association and the American Psychological Association. Presently, she is working toward her goal to develop a boarding school for urban youth. Marc K. Nylen, is honored to serve as the Director of Gruenhagen Conference Center and Chair of the Oshkosh Placement Exchange ( on the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh campus. He has served as a university staff member for the past 25 years, and has been privileged to learn and be impacted by the undergraduate and graduate students he has worked with over that period of time. As the Chair of the Oshkosh Placement Exchange, he serves as the recruitment specialist for the nationally known and recognized student affairs job placement conference which has been hosted on the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh campus for 38 consecutive years. His areas of research and presentation include: graduate school preparation and selection; assistantships in the field of students affairs to financially support the pursuit of graduate education; and successfully navigating higher education job placement conferences in the United States. He looks forward to meeting with all conference attendees at this distinguished conference. J. Wayne Hyler has been an entrepreneur for over 40 years. In addition to his work in the corporate world with companies such as Allstate, Hyler has served on a myriad of corporate and community boards. A proud native of South Beloit, Illinois, his educational background is highlighted by a Bachelor s degree from Milton College as well as a Master s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Currently, Hyler serves as the owner of the Hyleco Group, a financial services firm in the Madison, Wisconsin metropolitan area. DuBoi McCarty, is a Counselor/Assistant Professor in the Center for Multicultural Learning at William Rainey Harper College in Palatine Illinois. As a counselor, he assists students with personal counseling and academic counseling. Prof. McCarty has also been a busy assistant professor teaching courses in Diversity, Humanistic Psychology, and First Year Experience. He also teaches in Harper s Summer Bridge program, which is designed to assist lower performing high school students making successful transitions from high school to college. Prof. McCarty completed his Bachelor s degree in Psychology in 1997, and his Master s degree in Counseling in 1999 from Western Illinois University. Christina Garza-Nelson, is Assistant professor of Social Sciences and Director of Community Leadership at Alverno Colleges. Previously, she served as Director, Upward Bound Program and Lecturer, Communication at. A native of Burlington, Wisconsin, Ms. Garza-Nelson is engaged in education, community, and leadership for social justice. She received her bachelor s and master s degrees in Communication from and is currently completing a Ph.D. in Urban Education from UW-Milwaukee. In addition, she teaches kickboxing for fitness and self-defense. Rhonda Kelsey is currently a member of Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett s Cabinet, serving as the City of Milwaukee s Purchasing Director and head of the Department of Administration s - Business Operations Division. As the City s Purchasing Director, Ms. Kelsey is responsible for the centralized management of the procurement of approximately $90 million dollars worth of goods and services for the City of Milwaukee, WI. In this position, she is responsible for directing the staff and the operations of the Procurement Services Section, the Emerging Business Enterprise Office, and the Document Services Section. Prior to holding this position, she served as the Policy Planning Coordinator for the Office of Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and served as a member of the Mayor s Executive Accountability In Management (AIM) Team. Ms. Kelsey has also held progressive positions throughout her career in local government in the areas of budget and policy analysis and small, minority and women owned business contracting compliance. 15 Laurel L. Nobles is Senior Program Manager of Learn It Systems for the Milwaukee Market. She is direct supervisor of 1 program supervisor, 1 accounts payable coordinator and 10 certified teachers who provide research-based reading and math tutoring services to struggling students in grades 5K-12. Learn It s current math and reading programs consist of a custom-developed curriculum, parental involvement activities and workshops, professional development opportunities for teachers, and specially developed assessments that are customized to Wisconsin state standards and grade-level content standards. Joseph D. Hill, J.D., has been the proprietor of the Hill Law Office, LLC, a private law practice for over thirty years, with emphasis being placed on Personal Injury Plaintiff representation and Education law. The Education law practice is focused upon legal and racial issues associated with Special Education, student discipline, and institutional policy, practice and procedures. His educational background consist of a B.B.A from the University of Wisconsin- Whitewater, a M.S. from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, and a J.D. degree from the University of Houston. Anthony Timmons is currently a Policy Initiative Advisor for the Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR) in Madison Wisconsin. His working title is Lean Six Sigma Coordinator. Anthony led the implementation of the department's Lean Government Initiative based on the Wisconsin Governor's executive order #66 in He was also heavily involved as the agency's Change Agent during the recent implementation of the state's Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system known as STAR. He has also served as the DOR Controller, overseeing the Accounting operations. He has worn many other hats at the department, overseeing areas as diverse as building facilities, fleet, procurement, mailroom and the department's cafeteria Anthony has over 20 years of accounting and financial experience working in a number of different capacities. Anthony earned his MBA in Finance from UW Whitewater in 1986 and his BA in Accounting from North Carolina Central University in He is an avid golfer and is a fan of the Annual King/ Chavez golf outing. Regina Carlisle-Williams, is a family law legal assistant at Loeb & Herman, S.C. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She has over 35 years of experience as a family law legal assistant. Ms. Carlisle-Williams is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin- Whitewater. She is the recipient of many awards including the Wisconsin Law Journal Unsung Heroes Award, the Legal Professional of the Year Award, Award for Excellence in Mentoring, an award from the African American Committee of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Delta Trailblazer Award, and the Delta of the Year Award. In addition, Ms. Carlisle-Williams received a Proclamation from the Mayor of Milwaukee for her outstanding services to the legal community as well as her public service to the community. Ms. Carlisle-Williams served for 11 years as the Wisconsin State Coordinator for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Jewel Lewis is a senior Biology major at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater who is originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In addition to serving as president for UW-W s chapter, she is a ROAD s Scholar and a participant in the McNair Scholars Program. Jewel hopes to one day be a pediatrician. Rokeshia Robinson- Hopgood is a Senior Security Analyst at West Bend Mutual Insurance. In this role, she is responsible for defining and implementing security policies, processes, and standards. She plays an advisory role in application development and acts as a liaison and subject matter expert on IT projects. Rokeshia holds a Master's degree in Business Administration and Information Technology Management and Bachelors in Business Administration and Information Technology Infrastructure from the University of Wisconsin Whitewater. She also is a Certified Information Security Professional. Sheri Morgan-Bolton, is a sales professional, entrepreneur and owner of her own interior design firm- Bolton Designs & Interiors, LLC. Her career began in academia, serving as Residence Life Assistant Director at the University of Wisconsin- Whitewater. After leaving academia for corporate America, Sheri worked as District Sales Manager for the Business Services Division at Office Depot. Currently, she is a professor of Residential Interior Design at the College of DuPage. One of her career highlights was being selected to serve as a Holiday Decorator at the United States White House, where she met First Lady Michelle Obama. Sheri received an MBA, with an emphasis in Marketing and Management, from the University of Wisconsin- Whitewater. She also holds two undergraduate degrees: Communications/Business Gyldnis King, is a Manager of Customer Service for We Energies. In this role, King has overall responsibility for the planning and engineering of the company s electric and natural gas distribution systems in the Southern Area (Burlington, Racine, sections of Milwaukee, and Kenosha). Prior to joining We Energies in September 2000, King was an Industrial Hygienist for the Veterans Affairs Medical Center for 9 years. She earned both a Bachelor s and a Master s of Science degree in Safety from the University of Wisconsin- Whitewater. King served as the first Board President of the Wisconsin Chapter of the American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE) for three years and is currently on the Advisory Board. King is a proud breast cancer survivor and devotes time and resources to prevention, treatment, patient advocacy and a cure.
