7 Destination INTO Manchester 7 Your INTO Study Centre The INTO Centre is located in the centre of Manchester and has everything you need from modern classrooms to our friendly support team. That s not forgetting our teachers who have many years experience of helping international students like you to improve their English, adapt to studying in the UK and go on to be successful at university and beyond. LEARNING FACILITIES All of your classes will take place in the Centre. Classrooms have digital whiteboards, which allow your teachers to use online resources, and are designed to encourage interaction and make sure you get involved. Classes mirror university-style teaching with lectures, practical sessions, seminars, tutorials, supported private study and e-learning so you experience university study from the start. The Learning Resource Centre also has a range of materials for you including: books and journals DVDs ejournals and online articles newspapers printing and scanning facilities E-LEARNING FACILITIES Throughout your studies you will have access to the Centre s virtual learning environment. Use this to download lecture notes and other course content, as well as additional materials that can compliment your in-class studies. YOUR ATTENDANCE It is important that you attend all your classes, because missing them will impact on your progress and may also affect your student visa. We carefully monitor attendance and if there is an issue we will work with you to find a solution and get you back into class as soon as possible. SUPPORT WHEN YOU NEED US Whenever you want to talk to someone you can go to the Centre s welcome desk where you will find friendly staff dedicated to your welfare. This may be the first time you are studying overseas, but we have welcomed thousands of students, so we will be able to help you no matter what the problem. SUPPORT FOR UNDER 18s Studying overseas is a big step for anyone, but even more so for younger students. During your first week, you will be given a dedicated person to contact and we will go through with you the rules and safeguards we have put in place to ensure your wellbeing. You ll also receive a copy of our code of conduct, which you must follow especially outside of class when you will be unsupervised. ARTS AND CULTURE Theatres, cinemas, comedy clubs and music venues, there really is something for everyone in Manchester. Over 75 museums and galleries including The Whitworth and Manchester Museum most are free to enter. Enjoy a show at the Palace Theatre, just around the corner from the INTO Centre. Watch a music concert at Manchester Arena with friends. Take a boat tour of Manchester s canals. EATING AND DRINKING The city s 500 restaurants offer you an excellent choice of British and international cuisine. Why not head to Deansgate for anything from tapas to traditional pub food. Or for a taste of Asia visit the UK s second largest Chinatown or Rusholme s Curry Mile. The INTO Centre is perfectly located for you to enjoy cafés, snack bars, and hot meals, and Starbucks is only two minutes away. SPORT Manchester is world-famous for sport, so get involved and stay active. Home to two famous football clubs: Manchester United and Manchester City. Head to Sportcity for exercise fun, less than two miles from the Centre. Visit Old Trafford, the famous football ground of Manchester United. Swim at the Manchester Aquatics Centre or cycle at Manchester Velodrome. Experience the traditional sport of cricket at Lancashire s Old Trafford Ground. SHOPPING Enjoy looking around the high street shops and designer boutiques at the Arndale Centre, or go to the Northern Quarter for a modern mix of cafés and vintage boutiques. If you have a real passion for fashion, take a bus to the Trafford Centre, with over 250 shops. GETTING AROUND Although one of the largest cities in the UK, Manchester is easy to get around. Its excellent public transport system has buses, a Metrolink tram and a train network with connections across the UK. Manchester Airport, which is only 20 minutes from the city centre by train, also has flights to 200 destinations if you want to go further afield. BEYOND THE CITY Manchester is a great base from which to explore the rest of the UK. Four national parks are a short train ride away including the Lake District and Snowdonia in Wales. Not only will you have fun, but you will gain experience in group work, leadership, events management and social media. LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME Take part in a programme to develop skills which can be included on your personal statement for university applications. During lunchtime workshops over 10 weeks, you will explore new topics, express opinions in English and improve your team-working skills. All these skills are useful in life beyond INTO Manchester. The choice is yours. HALLS OF RESIDENCE If you choose to live in residential accommodation, you will enjoy independent living as part of an international community where you can make friends easily. Park View Located in the university quarter of the city this residence is only a 10-minute bus journey from the INTO Centre. All rooms have modern facilities and Wi-Fi, and you will also be given a free annual bus pass. If you are under 18 and want to live in a residence, you will stay in Park View. Parkway Gate This purpose-built student residence is situated in the heart of Manchester, and includes bicycle storage, TVs in each flat, and common rooms with a TV and pool table. SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT Centre-appointed residential tutors, who live in each residence, will help you to settle in on arrival, organise social activities and provide support during out-of-office hours. They are all previous INTO students with first-hand experience of studying overseas. HOMESTAY ACCOMMODATION INTO Manchester has a network of carefully selected hosts who will welcome you into their homes. This is an opportunity to experience British life first-hand, improving your English in a friendly environment. Facilities include: a single study bedroom shared breakfast and evening meals access to household facilities including laundry and communal bathroom If you are under 18 your host will explain the rules of homestay and will be in contact with the Centre regularly to ensure your well-being. They will be able to answer any questions and provide guidance, to ensure your academic success. Assessment will be through examinations and coursework including: written assignments, practical exercises, group and individual research projects, presentations and problem-solving exercises. HOW LONG IS THE PROGRAMME? Depending on your English language level the programme lasts two or three terms. You can undertake English language preparation before entering the programme if you meet the programme s academic requirements but not the minimum English language requirements. MODULE DESCRIPTIONS Detailed descriptions of the core and specialist modules for the Pre-Master s programme are below. English for Academic Purposes The aim of this module is to provide you with the EAP skills that will prepare you for a postgraduate course at a UK university. Through 10 contact hours per week and an additional two hours tutorial time, you will develop your academic reading, writing and listening skills as well as presentation skills. You will be assessed by authentic, continuous assessment tasks, including a dissertation as well as EAP final exams. Management Studies* In the preparatory term, the Management syllabus is delivered over six timetabled hours per week for 3-term students; in the core and final terms the syllabus is delivered over three timetabled hours per week for 3-term and 2-term students. In addition to teaching you about business management, the module is designed so that you have the opportunity to develop a range of postgraduate study skills that will help you to succeed at a UK university. The methods of learning and assessment that are introduced in this module will also support the work you do for Research Methods and EAP. * The Management Studies module is a compulsory module which is not credit bearing. Research Methods Seven hours of your total contact time per week will be dedicated to Research Methods.These classes will help you to plan a research project, conduct research and write up a dissertation.
