2 Executive Summary Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to present you with this statistical report on international students at the University of St Thomas. The Office of International Student Services (OISS) is responsible for serving UST s international community. Academic year represents a historic milestone because: 1) St Thomas surpassed the Milestone of first time, first year cohort of students, and 2) our undergraduate international population significantly increased. This report serves as statistical resource about our international students (including degree seeking, exchanges, and other visa holders) at the University of St Thomas. The report does NOT include international scholars, who serve as researchers, faculty members, and short-term lecturers, although we have one J-1 Scholar from China and one visiting research student from Italy. All reported students and scholars are non-immigrants and must be tracked and reported on through the Office of International Student Services (OISS). 5 Total International Population The Office of International Student Services at the University of St. Thomas is responsible for tracking, reporting and providing services for over 350+ international students. *Practical Training 40 10% Others 20 5% Graduate % Undergraduate % The chart above depicts the breakdown of the international students at UST H1 visa holders, dependents on H4, B2, L2 are included in Others Students on OPT (Regular and STEM) are included in Practical Training Prospective incoming students (15 F1 and 2 J1) are not included in chart University of St. Thomas Office of International Student Services Page 5

6 Number of International Students *Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a benefit for international students that allows them to work anywhere in the U.S. for 12 months after their completion of studies. Although students can do precompletion OPT, 100% of our OPT students are on post-completion OPT. 7 Undergraduate Vs Graduate Student Enrollment The total number of graduate students in fall 2010 is 199. This is a 2.5% increase from fall 2009 Total number of undergraduate students in fall 2010 is 134, which is a 8.9% increase as compared to 2009 % of graduate population that is international = 4.8% % of undergraduate population that is international = 2.1% What do International Students contribute to the US economy?
