8 The UCAS application consists of Sections on: - Education: GCSE grades + A level subject choices - University Choices: Which university and course? - Personal statement: Why do you want to study that subject? School supplies the reference.

9 How to choose a university course? Only 1 reason. Due to an enjoyment and interest in a subject. Why? - 3 or 4 years - Lots of tuition fees - It will help determine your further life course etc.. - Play to your strengths

10 How to choose a course? Different options 1. Choose a course that you would like to study - Single honours i.e. BA in History - Joint honours i.e. BA in History and English or History with English - BA or BSc i.e. Economics - Professional accreditation i.e. Psychology, Accountancy.

11 Other factors to take into consideration 1. Does the university offer the course I want to study? Not all universities offer the same subjects Newer universities are considerably better for more vocational subjects e.g. Physiotherapy. 2. Do I have the subject requirements for the course? Some courses have particular requirements Look at these closely e.g. Economics. Some courses may ask for Maths and Further Maths, others do not. 3. Do I have the grade requirements for the course? Check the GCSE and A level requirements If you are not realistically going to be predicted those grades it is not worth applying to that university.

12 4. Am I interested in the specific course detail? Courses differ at different institutions, e.g. English Literature at Durham University is entirely different in structure, era and texts studied compared to University of Sussex. 5. Do I want to have a sandwich year? A year in industry or abroad etc. e.g. Surrey, Bath and Brunel University. 6. Do I want to go to a university in a city or campus? Campus e.g. Lancaster, Warwick City e.g. Leeds, Birmingham etc. 7. Do I have any specific hobbies or interests that mean I should aim for certain universities? If, for example, you are a keen surfer, choose a university on or near the coast.

19 What happens after the application has been paid and sent? - IT HAS NOT GONE TO UCAS - Tutor/link staff attach reference (compiled from subject teacher statements) - Checked by tutor - Checked by Mr Cheshire/link (focusing on choices, personal statement quality etc.) - Final grammar check by Mrs Turner- corrections made with student in 1 to 1 meeting - Mr Cheshire - final check + send.

20 What happens once it has gone? Oxford/ Cambridge: Admissions tests: 31 st October 2018 Written work Interviews Some courses, e.g. Medicine, Education, Nursing, Architecture) Admissions tests (e.g. BMAT, UKCAT, LNAT) Interview Other courses: Potentially an interview (depending on university)

21 The university makes a decision Either: - Conditional offer (e.g. ABB, or in some cases unconditional) - Rejection

22 A decision then has to be made - A firm choice and an insurance E.g. you have applied to Psychology with grades of AAB 1. Leeds (rejection ) 2. Sheffield AAB 3. Manchester AAB 4. Liverpool ABB 5. Bangor BBC Firm (1 st Choice) Sheffield Insurance (2 nd Choice) Liverpool Insurance offer must be lower than the firm 1 st choice
