4 The Oxbridge 15! 2018 has seen 15 Runshaw students offered places at Oxford or Cambridge. This means that the number of Runshaw students offered places at these prestigious universities is over 100 since 2012!

Rachael Davidson from Archbishop Temple plans to study Veterinary Medicine at Robinson College, Cambridge Patrick Farnworth from Southlands High School is planning on going to King s College to study Mathematics Sam Gerrard from Bishop Rawstorne plans to study Law at Trinity College, Cambridge Chris Jones, previously from Greenbank High School plans to go to Worcester College, Oxford to study Earth Science Ayaz Khan from St James s Bolton is planning on studying Medicine at Cambridge University Joshua Kinsella from Canon Slade is planning on going to Brasenose College, Oxford, to study Law Mara Lawrenson from Leyland St Mary s is planning on studying Law at Trinity College, Cambridge Alex Melling, previously from Balshaw s High School plans to go to Brasenose College, Oxford, to study Classics James Nevett from St Michael s is planning on studying History at Brasenose College, Oxford Harvey Phythian from Bishop Rawstorne is planning on studying History at King s College, Cambridge Kate Ramsay from St. Michael s is planning on studying French & Linguistics at St Peter s College, Oxford Cerys Stone from Forest School, Walthamstow is planning on studying PPE at Oxford University Joe Wells, previously from St Michael s plans to go to Cambridge University to study Mathematics Hannah Worthington from Rivington & Blackrod is planning on going to Worcester College, Oxford, to study Earth Sciences.

6 Dazzling A Level Awards Evening Our A Level awards ceremony took place on the evening of Monday 18th December. The Silverdale Sports Hall was magically transformed into a spectacular venue to receive a large number of our A Level students who left in the Summer of Many parents, guardians and relatives also attended as our guests. Our former students received special awards, subject awards and their A Level certificates. The Mayors of Chorley and South Ribble were in attendance as well as many of the college governors. The audience was addressed by our Principal Simon Partington and David Sherliker, Chair of Governors. Ryan Newman also spoke on behalf of the student body whilst Deputy Principal Clare Russell did a fabulous job as our compere. During the event we were entertained superbly by Runshaw s Brass Ensemble and Jazz Group. The ceremony was followed by excellent drinks and canapés, provided by the Runshaw Catering team. Congratulations to the Class of 2017 and good luck for the future!

8 Horizons: Runshaw s High Performance Programme As part of the Horizons: Runshaw s High Performance Programme there is an opportunity to join an Academy in every subject at Runshaw. Each Academy provides students with an unrivalled range of additional opportunities to challenge and stretch themselves and to go beyond the confines of the syllabus. From dedicated preparation for potential medics as part of Medical Society, preparations for competitions such as RES Young Economist of the Year in Business, through to a wide range of activities in Art, Music and Sport; our Academies really do provide something for all. 9 Your A Level Options Three + One Ever since A levels were first introduced, the main aim for students has always been to complete (at least) 3 full A Levels, with good grades, in subjects that are linked to their future career aspirations. In September 2018 we are delighted to continue to offer a fully flexible A Level programme with a range of 43 different subjects, from which you can choose either 3 or 4 subjects to make up your 2-year study programme (or 5 subjects in exceptional circumstances). Whatever you decide; at the end of the first year you will complete internal assessments to measure your progress in each subject. The A Level examinations will then take place at the end of Year 2. At Runshaw, we put teaching, learning and the needs of our students first

10 Runshaw in the News Maths Challenge Success Congratulations to 162 of our Maths students who collected their UK Senior Maths Challenge Certificate. There were 14 students who achieved a Gold, 58 students achieved a Silver and 90 students took the Bronze award. Well done all of you! Our talented students Daniel Antrobus, Adam Hulme, and Harry Clipston were invited to the Department of Computer Science at the University of Oxford on Saturday 27 January as finalists in a UK-wide computing competition The UK BEBRAS Computational Thinking Challenge. Reaching the final of the Elite age group is an impressive achievement, as 5,174 students entered the first round for the age group (16 18). Daniel, Adam, and Harry were among the top 60 highest achieving students invited to the final round in their age group, and were presented with their finalist s certificates at a prize-giving ceremony at Hertford College. 11 Alumni News Dave s Olympic result Our fantastic former students go from strength to strength, here are some of their recent achievements. Alumna Anna Hopkin, the reigning British and English 50m freestyle swimming champion, has been selected to compete for England in April at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games! Good luck Anna! England selection Former Runshaw student Dave Ryding produced Britiain s best alpine skiing result for 30 years, taking ninth place in this years Winter Olympics. A huge well done to Dave from all of us at Runshaw. Team GB Gold Former Runshaw student, Amanda Derbyshire was selected to represent Great Britain in the Nations Cup CSIO 4* in America. Great Britain soared to victory taking the gold in the team class with clear rounds throughout the competition. A massive well done to Amanda and the rest of the Great British team!

12 March Open Evening The 7th of March saw our final Open Evening of the college year. Hundreds of guests were entertained by all our talented students, singers, Runshaw Radio and, of course, our renowned Runshaw cookies!
